1912 T227 Series of Champions Baseball Cards
Product Details
1912 T227 Series of Champions is technically a multi-sport release given that baseball players only occupy four spots in the checklist. However, those four names, led by Ty Cobb, are all Hall of Fame inductees and largely overshadow the remaining subjects. The rich colors and larger size of T227 produces a captivating card design that maintains high regard and value with collectors.
The T227 Series of Champions set includes participants from a wide mix of sports and athletic events. In addition to baseball, other sports represented in the colorful set include boxing, billiards, golf, various racing sports, track & field, swimming, wrestling and aviation.
On the larger side for tobacco cards at 2-5/16" by 3-3/8", T227 Series of Champions cards are not far off from the modern card sizing. Card fronts showcase a detailed lithograph of each subject, complete with a bright background. A white border frames the card and evokes the feel of a large T206 example. Finally, the subject's name is noted in the top-right corner on the vertical cards and is found in either top corner for the horizontal cards. While most cards have simple backgrounds, the non-traditional sports subjects, like Dixie IV and Uhlan, have more elaborate backgrounds.
The T227 Series of Champions make good use of the larger card size with a lengthy bio for each subject. A tobacco ad is found below the stats and information, and is available from Honest Long Cut Chew or Miners Extra Smoking Tobacco. The Miners Extra cards are notable because T227 is the only baseball release issued by the company. Several blank backs have also emerged but the general consensus is that they were cut from an advertising display.
As referenced above, baseball reigns supreme in 1912 T227 Series of Champions. In addition to Ty Cobb, the Hall of Fame options include Home Run Baker, Chief Bender and Rube Marquard. Outside of the baseball subjects, boxers (pugilists) are next in popularity for the T227 set, including a card for Jack Johnson, the former world heavyweight boxing champion. Although the backs note 25 designs, the checklist total sits at 24 cards. Many collectors believe the final card will eventually be uncovered.
Part of what makes the T227 Series of Champions set less intriguing to collectors is that there are simply not many high grade example to chase. This is because the cards were originally found in tobacco pouches with no protection, exposing it to considerable wear and staining. As a result, many T227 cards were already in poor condition when they were first pulled.
