1912 T202 Hassan Triple Folders Baseball Cards
Product Details
If two is good, then three must be even better. Clearly this was the mindset that was in place for the 1912 T202 Hassan Triple Folders Baseball cards. Featuring a trio of images within one card, the T202 cards mirror the design of other releases from the time but stand out due to the multiple panels and overall size.
In 1911, the American Tobacco Company inserted a set of cards featuring two players sharing one card in a design collectors now classify as T201. The next year, the company took the concept a step further with 1912 T202 Hassan Triple Folders Baseball. The product included three different sections on a single card that could be folded together. Found in packages of Hassan Cigarettes, the cards also borrowed from the design of another set, the gold-bordered T205 cards from the same brand in 1911.
1912 T202 Hassan Triple Folders Baseball card fronts showcase three different parts. The main component is a black-and-white game photo in the middle of the card, with smaller player portraits attached on each side. The design of those end cards are reminiscent of T205, except there is no team logo and the borders are white. The full measurements for the entire card is approximately 2-1/4" x 5-1/4".
Helping distinguish between the two leagues, there are separate designs for American and National League players. The American League players are accompanied by generic baseball equipment, while those in the National Leaguer are given a borderless fade around the edges of the pictures. Also, print text is used for American League names and script is featured on the National League cards. A version for each league can be seen above.
Card backs are matched to the front, with biographies for the players and text describing the action of the center panel photo. There is also a title listed for each center image that describes the action. All three 1912 T202 Hassan Triple Folders Baseball card parts have a Hassan advertisement at the bottom and an example of the card back is shown below.
Like the T201 cards, the T202 cards have folds, which allow the players to be folded over the center picture as a type of booklet. Some of the players on the end panels are also in the center photo, but that isn't always the case. There are 76 different center action photos, but some can be found with different player end panels attached. For that reason, most collectors count 132 total cards in the complete 1912 T202 Hassan Triple Folders Baseball set.
Appearing in several different cards, Ty Cobb is the key subject in the set. Various cards for Hall of Fame players Christy Mathewson and Walter Johnson are also popular options. While the cards are found intact and with the panels separated, the complete versions are the most sought after and valuable.
