2023 Topps Series 1 Baseball Cards Checklist

Rated a two based solely on depth of rookie class cards included in this segment of the set.

Very disappointed in quantity of parallel, insert, and numbered cards. The odds on pulls, compared to the 2022 Update set leads me to believe Fanatics is taking the lower end collector for granted and using us as a cash cow. Overprinting base sets dilutes the availability of more desirable – and valuable – parallel/numbered/inserts. And that is exactly what Fanatics did.

Will be buying cards in the aftermarket.

Not a fan of this design, very cluttered, but I do like the 1988 autos! I thought last year’s design was superb, very clean. And that’s probably because I like TTM and that design is perfect for signing. All that said, I noticed 4 1988 autos that aren’t listed here: Jerar Encarnacion – Marlins, Garrett Hill – Tigers, Matthew Liberatore – Cardinals, and Nelson Velazquez – Cubs. I stumbled upon those while looking for others on eBay. If anyone has found any others that aren’t on the list, let us know!

question, just getting back into the hobby, looking at all the info above how do i know which ones are SP and SSP cards this year? Thanks.

Jeff: I think the issue with Gypsy Queen is its actual name.

The cards look great but to have a set in 2023 called Gypsy Queen is just not going to fly.

Maybe they will bring back some other 19th century type cards or bring back Gypsy Queen and just call it GQ.

try putting your thumb over the “extra face” as you sort your cards….

I really like the design and some of the inserts, but man do they seem to be stingy on the autos this time around. Now, I do have one BIG question. I pulled a black border of Ha-seong Kim and it has NO number on the back. Black borders are of 72 but mine has nothing. Has anyone else encountered this error? Where should I turn for more info?

THE CENTERING THE CENTERING THE CENTERING!!!! Sorry, I just havent heard enough rave about how well this years cards are CENTERED!!! This is one poppy design! Cant wait to see the chromium versions! Definitely a set for the ages with this rookie crop and design! My favorite chrome design is 2001 and I believe this one just might rival that!! I will be breaking this stuff all a plenty!!! Nice design, but it’s gonna have to satisfy for awhile. There’s a video on Youtube from someone (the Grip N Rip guy) who has news from the Topps promo event in AZ where it was confirmed that Topps is doing away w/ seven baseball sets effective immediately, including Opening Day and Gypsy Queen. Topps Heritage wasn’t mentioned. I also read that Panini is getting out of baseball.

wonder why Oswaldo Cabrera has a card in the Silver Pack checklist but not in Series 1? Does this not create confusion when determining the players most desired/valuable or flagship rookie? In the past we know that some players have a SP rookie before they have a base card… I just thought it was unique and a bit frustrating.

Purchased a Jumbo Case. Got alot of nice cards but none of the SSP cards at all. No Hometown Advantage, no heavy lumber and no clear version. Thought I would at least receive some of the SP cards. Had two decent autographs, no autograph patches and a Julio Rodriguez Patch /25,very nice card. Most of my numbered cards were no superstars, however it is a huge checklist. Feel like for the money I should have received some more quality cards, but it is what it is. Not a bad design, have ton of sets I will be listing on ebay.

Opened a jumbo and was 34 cards short of a base set! Significantly more missing cards than past years. Any rhyme or reason to the different colors (light blue, navy, red, grey, black) used on the backs?

After the purchase of over fifteen blaster boxes and thirty-five hanger packs the verdict without question appears the product to be guilty of improper collation to common card distribution. The joy of opening the packages does not equal the anguish of common non-collectible cards.

Ripped a case of jumbos and have been very pleased with the QC of everything. However, the Patchwork of the Past base cards do not have serial numbers on them. Anyone know if they are for sure /399?

Rating is based on Jumbos which I think will be well received despite some comments above from the peanut gallery complaining about why not all of their team’s players are in here or that retail odds have changed. Maybe they should collect stamps or something.

Anyway LOVE the Golden Mirror concept – people now KNOW if they have an SSP. And they are tough enough to pull but not so difficult. They will hold value and add to the chase. The regular checklist is good. The card design is leaps and bounds better. I wish they were cheaper as I miss the not-too long ago days of $100 – $120 jumbos but it is what it is.

The one thing I would do if I were Topps is create Retail/Hanger/Blaster auto exclusives or a really low # one to add a little value to opening those. Those odds look grim on all but Hangers for many things.

1star. Horrible collation. Hobby Box opened. No relic or autograph. Second one I’ve heard this happened.

This is Trash-Natics first kick in the junk for retail buyers. 1 in 99 boxes for one gold card numbered to 2023? And now the Low IQ investors are paying 200+ dollars for a couple low end jersey or auto cards in Jumbo boxes. This stuff will be discount fodder soon. It’s a good looking set with 1990 Topps print runs. Hopefully Trash-Natics goes under quickly.

Like the design this year and huge improvement. Did a jumbo box today and got a complete set. Zero doubles on any of the rookies you would want to pull. Auto and relics were blah but that is the risk you take. Average three star rating, not bad, not great.

Great design. All cards were centered and no corner dings. Hobby jumbo was sold out so opted for regular hobby. No SP’s, but did land an Ohtani Aces. 3 doubles of RC’s which meant my box had no Michael Harris. Overall it was a fun box to open for $82 at LCS.

You have the Reverence Patch Auto Parallels wrong. First, there is no red parallel. Platinum is /5 and Gold is 1/1, just like last year. Check pack odds. For jumbo it’s 1 in 3,688 for Platinum and 1 in 18,176 for Gold. Because of this checklist and the one over at Beckett people are already listing these redemptions wrong (I pulled a gold today, but because of these erroneous checklists I’m not sure people will believe it’s a 1/1).

Any word on any errors found yet?

Overall nice design.. For me as a very long time Topps guy it was nice to see them get back to turning all the cards the right way when collating them. Also the jumbo boxes I bought each delivered a complete base set.

Has anyone heard anything about when Heritage is coming out? Why no info or release date yet?

Are there any base short prints?

Must be tough for Topps to try and figure out who will be playing for the Oakland/Vegas A’s, eh?
So far the only player on the checklist that’s already gone is Sean Murphy. But Seth Brown and Paul Blackburn may be next…

I love the idea of the Golden Mirror Image Variation – 330 cards! I really like the design as well. Has Topps released the odds on finding the variations, or how many of each card will be printed? I hope they are all just SP, and not SSP, etc.!

Well, well, well, Topps got it right with the 1988 autograph cards of Oakland A’s Dave Stewart, Dennis Eckersley, Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire, who all played for the A’s in ’88. Hopefully that trend will continue in both series 2 and the update issue depicting more A’s players like Carney Lansford, Terry Steinbach and ROY Walt Weiss among other players from that squad. Topps however still continues to portray Rickey Henderson in an A’s uniform in the regular ’88 issue even though he was still a Yankee that year.

What is up with the checklist? So many cards with the same number, is that an error on this site or a Topps error?

I like the Topps Baseball 2023 design is really awesome looking cards. I can’t wait to get Topps Baseball 2023 series 1. It’s going to be fun to collect.

Does anyone know if we will see the return of the legendary home field advantage cards in 2023??
I have 14 of the 15 cards (Missing Babe Ruth) and really enjoyed trying to find them all

Best design in a long time!

Now, the design is B-A-U-T-FUL! However, with the economy now cards are just not worth messing with. They are very overpriced with so many sitting on retail shelves “rotting away”. Not for an investor with value falling, and not for the collector with such high costs. Face the facts.

A vast improvement over the 2022 design, which was way too ‘Bowmanish.” I always prefer a team logo on the card, even if in this case it may be partially obscured. The small portrait is nice, but I am hoping the main pictures have some variety instead of the usual hitter at the plate and pitcher on the mound poses. Mix in a variety action shots (baserunning, fielding, etc.) as well as stadium backgrounds, fan interactions, pre-game warmups, on deck circle and dugout poses, alternate unis, etc. and the set should be a winner. Best looking design since 2019.

Best design in twenty years. I love it! Ill buy a couple of cases.

Wow. They look to have corrected the issue that I had with the team name (see my earlier comment). In the first protype of the card (image at top of page), the team name was rather large and redundant, and even partially hidden behind the head photo. In the new photos of the upcoming cards, you can see that they made the team’s name much smaller. I think this works a bit better, although I still think they could have just left if off the front of the card. I do like this design, and it will be immediately recognizable as 2023. It’s also nice that they are continuing the anniversary cards, advancing to the 1988 design.

Clean, crisp and easy to read . Would have liked to see the back of the card. I’m a big stat guy and the back is important to me also.

Finally! A Topps base design that’s not completely boring!!

Is it just me or does it seem odd that Topps hasn’t released any info yet on this set or no release date for Heritage & Opening Day? Usually by now there’s info out there. I’m just curious if anyone has heard anything

Looks okay, but I’m not sure why Adley Rutschman’s rookie card is in this set, and not the 2022 Update set, as he spent most of last year in the Big Leagues. The card should have the “All-Star Rookie” cup on it inside of the “RC” logo. Ah, well.

When will this be released?

Collector since 1981 and this looks amateurish to me. I buy for my PC players (both retired) and cool art. This isn’t cool art. Maybe this will look better on actual cards, but I doubt it. Definitely not pre-ordering any. Also, just to put my .02 in on borders, I don’t care if the product has, or doesn’t have, borders as long as the design is killer. I love 2015 and 2016, 2017 was horrific, 2018 was excellent, 2019 was “ok” and 2020 was good. 2021 sucked, 2022 was solid.

The 2023 Topps front design is definitely a winner in my opinion . The player is the main aspect of the overall composition of the card . The small portrait of the player in the bottom corner is nice as well . The only problem I have with the front design is the partial cut – off of the team logo and full team name . Much better than the geometric angled name monstrosities of past years though . Very good but still room for improvement . From an artist’s standpoint that is .

2003 topps called and they want their design back.

Looks okay at best. Head is too big forsure. 3rd year in a row of full border… which if done right looks good (has only looked boring/mundane/generic the last 2 years). Almost as if they don’t have exclusive rights.

The big question will be the parallels….Are they just the boring border color changes? Or will they go back to form with the faded design over the entirety of the card (think Independence Day parallel w/ shooting stars across the card)? I can’t believe they did away with that 2020 and beyond. That’s what made their parallels, well….parallels! And now that there are more parallels than ever, they should definitely be making them look unique instead of just a plain border color change…..They don’t pop whatsoever :(

Meh. Not very good, but better than most of the other Topps designs. Similar to 1996 Topps. If you wanna see what I mean, take a look at one of those

You are crazy. The headshot is amazing. The logo is very well done. There is nothing not to like about this set! It will go down as the best design in Topps history. Bar none.

My favorite two designs ever are 1983 and 1984. This design pays homage to those designs. I will take 2023 for the win. Hopefully, 2024 brings back the woodgrain look of 1962 and 1987. Long live woodgrain!

This is at least an attempt at a nice, fresh, design. My only critique would be that the team name, mostly hidden behind the head shot, is a redundant feature when you already have a recognizable logo at such a big size. Speaking of logos, I’m not looking forward to seeing the worst logo in baseball (The Guardians) so prominently displayed. Additionally, many teams don’t really have a modern logo that is anything more than initials or a team name design (Ex White Sox), but at least this will add a ‘home town” color to the card.

Overall, the design is unique, yet it pays homage to 03, 83 and 63. The key thing is uniqueness. These cards will be immediately recognizable as 2023.

Has a nice design thats easy to read but still stands out in a positive way. Weird that they are holding the base set release of Adley Rutschman until 2023 when they released his rookie card in the 2021 Bowman’s Best set. Then again some rookies from that set could be years away from having a base set release. I’m guessing Topps wouldn’t have released that set that way had they known Fanatics would buy them out.

I like it! The last 2 or 3 years card design were very similar and kind of bland. This new design is very different and is very attention grabbing in my opinion.

That is one ugly design.

I will not be collecting it.

The face should not be on the card.

They already have a player image and a second one is not needed.

The huge logo should be smaller.

Heck the face is covering half the team name.

Outstanding. I have liked the recent designs but this is a lot different in a very good way. I like the small headshot. Love the large logo. Name easy to read and position is there. Its got it all. I always look forward to the new card reveal!!

Not bad. I wish the headshot and nameplate were a little smaller, but good design overall. I still love how clean the 2022 design is, so a little hard to compare, but much better than a lot of years. 2021-23 have been huge improvements.

Nice..!! Something Bold and Different for a change. Head Portrait is really sharp! I assume that thin border will be color coordinated by team(?) 2023 Series 1 should be tremendous. Adley, Gunnar, Kyle Stowers, Michael Harris, Triston Casas, etc…who am I missing?

The large bird is off-putting, and the head shot is not deep enough to constitute a portrait.

Topps was due for its head shot action design, not bad at all.

I like the design and hope the backs are well done. Although not surprising it looks like Topps is holding back Adley Rutschman RC’s until the 2023 releases. A bit of a disappointment for the 2022 fall releases. However, the upcoming releases for 2022 should be outstanding with Julio Rodriguez, Bobby Witt, and a host of other strong rookies.
