What are some thoughts on this product after opening cases? I see Bedard’s YG card has come down drastically since last week.

I get people being upset about the pricing, but people are also paying it while grumbling. So, I can’t really be mad at them for getting that bag when this isn’t some critical product or service. The boxes are worth what people are willing to pay.

As for the product itself, it has been a while since there has been such a highly prized Young Gun, and I’m here for it! That’s not all, though. I really like the inserts! I’ve said for sometime that flagship could learn a thing or two from MVP in that aspect. MVP base cards are cheap trash, but the inserts are usually aesthetically pleasing and go out on a limb with new things. Flagship has been so incredibly boring for so long with their inserts. Every insert I pulled in Series 2 was welcome, though! I especially love the Portraits this season, but the Deep Roots card is incredible as well. Finally, 23-24 introducing a 1/1 Young Guns was much needed. There needed to be a “grail of grails” in flagship, and it now has it.

While I will be happy to see a return to some normalcy after the Bedard rookie bash is done in terms of price, I do hope that the decisions made in Series 1 and 2 in style continues on and even improves more.

This is the first year I have decided not to buy a hobby box. Not sure what is going on with Connor Bedard cards being so high. Great for the store selling the product but what a gamble at these prices.

How has the case breaking going? Love to see some comments.

Why do people complain about the price at Upper Deck? They’re not the ones charging $250+ from distributors. Complain to the retailers and the hype machine built around Bedard.

Vote with your wallet. Don’t buy into this absurd hype-based price gouge.

Huge hockey card collector here! Has gotten way to expensive, like most Panini Products. Come on Upper Deck, we expect better from you! The joy of collecting is disappearing and cost is making it harder and harder to stay engaged in the hobby. And placing a $1,000,000 bounty only pushes sales to higher price points. It also makes all the breakers purchase the product and resale it at even higher price points. Hobby is becoming a scaring place and will cause some people to go into major debt trying to chase cards they will never hit! So sad!

Let’s set a 1,000,000 bounty out and double the price of the box. Price gouging at its finest. Absolutely a joke.

Grateful that I got some at $115 a box back in October. I won’t pay $300-$320+ a box. However, I keep seeing shops sell out, so $300+ isn’t deterring everyone. I’m hearing some shops are requiring you to buy several boxes of S1 just to place an order for S2.

I love how these old people are crying about the price. Blaming distributors, blaming shops,… “Listen here sonny back in my back we would walk uphill both ways to pick up a pack of cards for a nickel” (in old man voice). Times have changed, if you really want to blame anyone, blame all the new people in the hobby, you all wanted to grow the hobby well there it is, this is what you wanted. New people means more demand. And yes you better believe UD, Panini, Topps are printing a ton!!!! Breakers are breaking at a faster pace than a shops can sell them. So who is to blame? Shops, that get allocated, Distributors that get cuts on allocation? Yes it rolls down hill, is it the manufactures that sell it at an inflated price on there website? (FYI this is why distributors get production cuts, and if they get cuts LCS’s are getting cuts) Breakers are getting direct because they can move the product faster. It keeps the prices high. I just want to see a total trash draft class and see how it sells and how cheap it is. will they dump boxes on amazon… you know that is next, Manufactures don’t need distributors, Shops… just breakers and people that are new to the hobby that like to gamble

In life you have 1 % of people robbing the others and 99% being robbed.
Upper Deck is in the 1%

Good day Mr Trey, I believe u maybe the middle man beteew the collector and Upper Deck. Just one question Mr Trey with all the negitive comment u get about 2023-24 series 2 gets back to upper deck.Iam just guess 0%.So i feel upper deck doen’t care about the really collectors and find they really don’t back up there product. It’s just ashame. So i,am guessing the rest of 2023-24 upper deck cards r 2 going to be high in price just because of one player.

Thanks for listening from a concern collector.

The pricing is nuts.. $25-$30 per pack for $5.00 of value, with odds of 10% or less to get a good hit…
nothing wrong with the product, it’s the price buy the distributors and retailers messing up the market..
If this works for them, you will see this price fluctuation every time a great rookie star comes along. And judging from what I have seen with the 14 yr old kids and up, right now, it is gonna happen every year for a while…
I’m out…..

Sorry Upper DECK i;am behind with the rest of the guys by charging $240-300 , I hate to ask what the prices going to be on SP authentic ; Sp game-used and what kind of price r u goig to charg on THE CUP $1,500.00. Upper deck u make it very hard being a long time collector..

It should be illegal for sports card businesses to charge a ridiculous price for a Hobby Box for a Rookie card that only a very few will get. Everyone should complain to the Better Business Bureau, as I have done, and complain about it. The probably won’t do anything about it but at least we can try.

Victor
Victor

Bedard is injured and the Blackhawks have only won 14 matches to date. Sure he is young and highly talented with a long future ahead but the current premium seems exorbitant. 15 G and 18 A will be unique stats on a Young Guns though.

Hobby prices are wearing down the overall collector experience. Hits are harder to land and there is limited value offered by most pulls. Most products have a return policy if you’re not satisfied but that is not the case here. Essentially, packs are lottery tickets and hobby is gambling.

Upper Deck does need to take responsibility of what is happening with their products and the market most of us really enjoyed being part of. not only are they going to screw us over 2023-24 product but they are also screwing us over product that they are currently releasing from 2021-22 and 2022-23 and even series 1 of 2023-24. the hobby shops must be really hurting as they have to purchase product that they likely pre-ordered months if not years ago and would have purchased and sold in those prior years. As a collector I can only commit so many dollars to this hobby and based on prior years it would appear that I purchase around 35% of what comes available. Someone is playing a game and it is not the Hobby Shops it is mostly Upper Deck and their distributors.

When will we see a checklist for series 2 or even O Pee Chee that is supposed to be released early February and what is taking UD so long to release these lists?

Al P
Al P

I am not on any social media platforms so thought I would post a comment here as I would hope that someone from UD reads it. I concur with most of the sentiments here, I pre-ordered 2 cases of Series 2; the first I paid for up front and was then informed about 6 months later by the seller that they could only give me a 1/2 case (most of you can probably figure out who this is); the second is to be paid for upon release and I can tell you that if the price point is suddenly as noted here, they will be told to keep it. I too have decided that I am done with UD either way and will be selling off all of my cards (with a few exceptions) including all of my YG sets going back to 2015. UD has turned this hobby into a disgraceful farce.

Chubby

print run for hobby will be 3 times the usual.. ie what series 1 was
and
for retail (ie tins, blasters retail versions) print run will be 10 times what series 1 was
the chase is for the numbered versions is Gold outburst, HG, Red outburst , Exclusive in hobby

with what people are willing to pay for the boxes.. one would think that actual YG cards of McDavid, Matthews, Makar, JHughes and Crosby or Ovechkin should explode as Bedard will have a good career but no where near most/all of the above.

Just announced at CDD: Bedard is in Series Two.

Scrambled duck
Scrambled duck

Bedard is great, but the blatant price gouging because of him isn’t good for the hobby. Boxes shouldn’t be priced as if they contain the best hit on the series (low chance). It can be priced fairly and distributors and sellers alike can still make some profit and more importantly let the hobby thrive instead of turning so many away.

Mark
Mark

Agreed. I lucked out and was able to pre-order at the “normal” price, which is still too damn high for what you get in a box. It’s at least double what I paid now, or you have to enter a raffle.

Long time seller = Done !!
Long time seller = Done !!

Like everyone else, I’m just pissed at the out of control hype over series 2. I’m not a collector, just been buying cases, ripping / selling hockey on ebay & FB marketplace for over 15 years. Always hope to make a few bucks or at least break even but it’s too hard now. You need a big hit or it doesn’t happen. Not too mention there are so many others ripping cases it’s very hard to even sell the inserts, reminds me of the 90’s again
Wasn’t impressed with my distributors price on S1 but I knew if I want S2 I had to fork it over. I’ll be lucky to break even and I did have some pretty good hits.
Now distributor tells me S2 will be over $200 a box out of the gate so retail will be around $300.
I mean seriously, over $2500 a case ??
Experienced breakers know you are not even guaranteed a Bedard YG in a case. I opened 3 cases of S1 and could only make 2 full sets, short 3 YG’s for a 3rd set. I had a couple extra Knies and Hughes so I was ok but if I was to get my 3 cases and only get 2 or 3 Bedard’s at this crazy case price I would lose my shirt. Wouldn’t want to be the guy buying 1 case at retail price for close to $3k and don’t even hit the Bedard, !! It will happen, every card shop and breaker knows this.
Told my distributor to cancel my 3 cases of series 2, He seemed shocked, then I told him I wouldn’t be buying extended either. All together I bought & ripped 18 cases of various 2022-23 products, that won’t be happening for 23-24.
Personally in my opinion and from what I have seen and heard so far, I think it’s the distributors who are screwing everyone, plus the LCS a little bit also, they want their piece of the pie too. Upper Deck is simply overproducing to make their money, it’s the distributors and card shops orchestrating the massive price increase.
You can’t gouge me for S2 and think I’m going to buy those 18 other product cases like nothing happened.
This should have been a great time for the hobby, a new possible superstar coming in. Instead, UD and their greedy distributors are trying to get rich on just this release. If you guys had an actual CEO who had some basic business understanding you would have been prepared for this and wouldn’t have allowed it to happen. It didn’t happen with 2015-16 (McDavid) or 16-17 (Matthews), why allow it now. Short term greed = short term gain, but once a few thousand people lose a lot of money on an overproduced YG card you can bet the hobby will thin out.
I can promise you this, my wallet will not contribute 1 dollar to the hype machine for series 2, not a single card.
As mentioned above, just cancelled my 3 cases, won’t be touching S2 or extended, and I bet I won’t be the only one, see you guys in 24-25 or beyond.

Looks like you’re in the wrong business then. I hate it when card breakers (who incidently drive up the price when they don’t care about the hobby at all) cry about how they “aren’t gonna make their money back”

Then go buy/sell real estate. We don’t want you here

Gary
Gary

Looks like a lot of bad press for this series … the cost is getting ridiculous … it is driving me away from the hobby … I use to love picking up a pack or two or a blaster box … but not anymore … hobby box is way out of my price range … All thanks to Upper Deck and the greedy retailers … getting the feeling of the junk era again but this time it’s financially driven

Derek
Derek

$130 a box for Series 1 was bad enough… but $275-300 for Series 2 is a joke. Like others have posted, there are many great cards to buy for that price. I’m pretty sure you’ll be able to buy a Bedard YG for the cost of 2 series 2 hobby boxes.

Put simply, overpriced garbage. A total money grab from UD only amplified by greedy retailers. These people are out of their minds.

First off, I like the changes to the product this year. New configuration etc. is great. What I can’t support is the presale prices and what many are ‘telling us’ the release price is going to be. Quite simply, the hobby shops can take a hike. I don’t blame Upper Deck b/c they sell the product to the distributors and that is the end of that. From that point on, the distributors are pulling the strings. Everything is allocated and now we are seeing hobby shops say their allocation has been slashed. I mean….whatever, at $150/cdn/box, it was an ok buy. At $350-400 cdn, I just laugh and walk away. They will never see a dime of my money, simple as that. The real nerve is hearing the hobby shops then try to justify these messed up presale prices. Come on, do you think we are idiots? Take your product and sit on it for as long as it takes before you realize your customers won’t pay stupid prices.

I also don’t want to hear hobby shops tell me about someone who may offer a ‘supposed bounty’ on the 1/1 Bedard Gold YG. Take that crap and stuff it where the sun don’t shine. Am I suppose to instantly pay $400/box b/c a 1/1 YG has a bounty? If you ever wanted to feel jaded, Series 2 will get you there.

I see a Canadian hobby shop trying to presell S2 tins for $150/each. WTF? Take your tin & shove it. What a predicament things have become. I am more disappointed and angry this year than I have ever been in the past. If I see retail, I may try it but this whole situation makes me not care.

If Upper Deck is reading this, maybe you need some price control at the distributor level?? You ultimately want your customers to buy and open product right? It’s not gonna happen when you are getting taken to the cleaners. I hope Upper Deck has a reasonable price on e-pack for S2. Time will tell.

UD since 90
UD since 90

I hope this turns out to be the straw that breaks Upper Decks back. They are a vile and disgusting company that just wants to screw over the customer for as much as they can. I’ve bought UD since 1990 and have every Young gun card. I just about to quit and sell off everything because of their greed.

Well, I just noticed that SCC upped their pre-order price on Series 2 to $299.95!!!!!!!!! Who can afford this anymore! I love collecting Hockey been doing it for 30+ years but they (meaning UD as well) are forcing me out the greedy sons a B’s. I sure wish the NHL would open the books to other card companies…

I have a strong feeling that it is not Upper Deck charging these prices, but rather all of the card shops independently. The Bedard rookie card is going to be very sought after.

Upper Deck ought to be ashamed of themselves! $240 for a box of Series 2? You’re out of your damn mind to think we’ll pay that. I know I won’t. I used to love collecting hockey cards. Not anymore! I’m done.

Stan B

I think Bedard will be in this set, 23/24 series 2. That’s what I heard at least. And that’s why the pre-order hobby boxes are at $240 USD. Basically, get a Bedard YG (About a 10% chance per box) and it pays for the box, if you don’t you’ll get about $5 worth of value for your $240.
