2022 Topps Series 1 Baseball Inserts

In typical flagship style, the insert selection for 2022 Topps Series 1 Baseball is robust. 2021’s Greatest Hits revisits 20 top offensive performers from the previous season, Diamond Greats puts 25 legends on a die-cut design, and Flashiest Feet focuses on 15 pairs of custom cleats.

2022 Topps Series 1 Baseball Cards Checklist 4

Other sets include Turnin’ Two, for the notable shortstop/2nd baseman duos, and Welcome to the Show, which looks back at the rookie years for current and former standouts and digs into each star's specific route to the bigs.

A three-part continuation insert, Generation Now showcases the newest MLB stars. The 90-card set is spread across Series 1, Series 2 and Update Series.

In general, the standard inserts can be found as Blue, Black (#/299), Gold (#/75), Red (#/10), and Platinum (1/1) parallels. There are also Autographs for certain subjects, numbered to 10 or less.

On top of that, Topps' annual look back to a prior design covers 1987 Topps Baseball in honor of the 35th anniversary. The retro series adds a new Wood (1/1) parallel alongside the parallels noted above.

Also debuting in 2022 Topps Series 1 Baseball, Salute to The Mick is another three-part insert found in Series 1, Series 2 and Update Series. The nine-card set naturally celebrates Mickey Mantle. Per Topps, these are "limited and very rare."

Retail fans can find exclusive Stars of MLB and Chrome Stars of MLB (1:10 packs) inserts.

Falling 1:228 packs, Home Field Advantage is a new short print to chase. These greatly resemble the popular Downtown inserts from Panini.

2022 Topps Series 1 Baseball Flagship Design

Marking the second straight year with a full border, the 2022 Topps Series 1 Baseball design is less busy than in recent years. The nameplate is also much easier to read.

Young phenom Wander Franco offers the first look at the design, which should be his initial MLB rookie card.

2022 Topps Series 1 Baseball Cards Checklist 15

As seen above, the 2022 Topps Series 1 Baseball style more resembles the look of the early 2010s. The back image was not provided, so collectors will have to wait to see how the stats are organized in 2022.

Be sure to review the overall Topps flagship gallery to compare how the design has evolved.

I like this set very much. I have question that can’t find the answer for. i have several of the player jersay number medalion cards but I have one that is twice as thick as the others. Does anyone know anything about that?

Love this set. Collecting a bunch…. Question for everyone out there….. I absolutely cannot find the freddy peralta major league material card. Been to 20 card stores, ebay, asked lots of sellers. No one can track down this card…. Anyone seen it or can point me in the right direction???

Topps gets 3 ***, as mentioned above the orientation is maddening especial when collating and at the same time looking for short prints. And again, as mentioned above the “relics” are junk. Give me 2 more base cards or a piece of gum. I would rather have a gum stained “common” over a swatch of a jersey probably coming from bat boy in spring training . Topps had a lifetime to get it right. FANATICS people are watching to see if you take corrective action.

This platform gets 5*****. I appreciate a place to b#@ch and get other peoples perspective. I have commented on 21-22 UD Hockey (crap) and it felt good. Ultimately I would like to see the occasional response from manufacturers and not just customer service people are provided a form letter response. Most customer service people are giving the arduous responsibility of saying “sorry”. Let’s hear from the quality control manager, VP’s, P’s and CEO’s.

This is a great industry where BILLION$ are being spent with not a enough accountability.

Trey – Do you know if this platform is ever reviewed by industry manufacturing leaders?

So. Topps is still putting “commemorative” junk as “hits” in hobby and HTA jumbo boxes. I should’ve learned my lesson last year. Panini is now king of the card collecting world in my book. You blew it, Topps. Ya stink. Ya cheaped out. The tissue paper relics were bad enough…. but now you’ve gone 100% fake on your “hits” and have the gall to call them “relics”? You must have a bunch of politicians working for you or something because you can really sell lies. First it was the BS known as redemptions. And now it’s these BS “commemorative relics” in hobby boxes that BELONG IN BLASTERS.

Easy pass after 1 box.

Jim m
Jim m

Totally agree with Joe G. Opened a case and got nothing but junk. I am so sick of these worthless memorabilia cards, and not 1 variation card. Hmmmm, what’s up with that. Always these worthless autos of folks that no one knows and never will. Oh well, what does one do. I’ve got a pile of worthless memorabilia cards in a pile that I’m going to build a house with. That’s all they’re good for, ’cause they won’t sell on Ebay. I wish I had my shop, there at least I could get a couple bucks each for them.

Why the hell can’t Topps get the card orientation to be the same throughout the entirety of a set anymore?

Roy Bluehorn
Roy Bluehorn

I’d give it 3 stars were it not for the high price and oversaturation of “inserts”.
The base set is 330 but I’m pretty sure there are over 500 mostly useless inserts. For example, why would I want a die-cut Steve Carlton card?? For me, that simply robs me of an extra card from the base set.

Ray
Ray

So seems like there is a variation or production change on the Player Jersey Number Medallion Commemorative Relics blaster box inserts. The cards are coming in 2 different thicknesses that have nothing to do with numbered variations. Anyone know anything? Thinking the thicker ones may have been the initial run and more rare while the thinner will dominate? (assumption based on knowing Topps and the lower cost of thinner cards!) Would love any knowledge anyone has or if anyone else has picked up on this?

Arthur Kinney

I got a box and was stunned by the audacity of Topps. WHY did Topps write GUARDIANS on the jerseys of Indians players even though they were in fact still called the Indians during the 2021 season? Don’t try to rewrite history, Topps. Bad, bad move. Another problem is that about half of the backs are printed upside down. Lastly, with so many insert sets and so many cards in the base set it’s almost impossible to get anything of quality. SMH.

D.J Williams
D.J Williams

I really like the look of this year’s cards, much more than the last couple of years. Kind of miss the borders though. The reason I wouldn’t give this set 5 stars is that the card backs are not the same on all cards. If you want to sort by numbers, the front of the cards are not all running in the same direction. Not so bad in a box, but I don’t like it at all in a binder. Not sure it that is on Topps or Fanatics, but for the price of cards these days, you would think they would do a better job of editing. They nailed the Guardian’s though!

Mike
Mike

The fact you can’t find them except on the secondary market at 150 per box. Deal breaker. Way too many BS inserts.
Generations? When the flippers and rich folk have driven everybody out good luck selling anything. Way too many SP.
Not for kids anymore. Well, at least when you burned them they’ll keep you warm during the coming whatever happens.

JEFF PETERSON
JEFF PETERSON

Better than last year as you can actually see names. Biggest quip though is not a surprise to me. Inserts and ESPECIALLY gold # inserts /2022 are getting tougher and tougher. If you look at the hobby boxes the odds of getting a black/71 are only 2x odds of a gold /2022. Why? Because Topps has produced a mountain of this stuff. That makes the perception of pulling a good player /2022 be a much more valuable card but they remain to be out of /2022. So collet them and the rest of the set but the investment potential? Buyer beware

Bought two hobby boxes on Topps website while they were available. Ripped one tonight. Pulled one base Wander and got lucky with an Alonso Homefield Advantage. Will likely keep the other one sealed.

Too many cards. Odds are not at all likely to produce any hits. These boxes should be priced below $100, not above it.

Clayt

Just ripped a hobby box from my local store. $130…and I got one auto…of the legendary Andre Jackson. Wowzers.

But they’re definitely better than last year’s design and the 1987-style inserts are fun. I just wish there were more hits!

ronfir

Busted a box of jumbos and what a mess. Topps quality control is simply not there! Box topper card of Wander Franco was bent to hell! I didn’t count but tons of cards appear to have the backs printed upside down! A total mess and since I got a complete set out of the jumbo, I am done with series one. Boo Toosp, a total mess

Mark
Mark

Gotta love S1 Topps.
No, the numbers on the back aren’t all in the same direction. (Come on! Once is fine, twice is really?!? And this time is just nuts….)
My local shop got 8 boxes of hobby. His price to buy was $55. Sold them for $129 each. Huge margin, good for him.
His restock price is $105 and doesn’t know if it will come in or not. That is nuts. He has to sell those 8 boxes to make money NOW so when the new ones come in later, he doesn’t make anything worthwhile if the market price is still the same ($120 to $135 a box). And if the market craps out, the money he made now is also gone. Yet Topps sells them on their website for $79. Come on! Distributors are the ones gouging all of us. Not the local shops and not necessarily Topps, either.

Fred
Fred

I did break a hobby jumbo.Did get a complete set. If you are looking for a lower price try Topps.Com. Hobby boxes going for $79.

Bill
Bill

My issue is probably not with Topps….sure hope this isn’t the new norm…but these wax prices are ridiculous. Just saw released and Steel City asking $140 for hobby box. Will push regular collectors like me, who’s been collecting since early 70s, out of the hobby.

kurt

easier to read name this time, clean design, looks like Bowman.. got my boxes for 99 bux. got em monday but learned they werent released til today. oh well… pulled a gold mojo wander from the silver pack and one wander rc per box, and a wander home run game card. other than those and the marsh and duran rookies, not much else in there.

Cal Varnson

Like the looks so far. Anyone seen the odds for Hobby Jumbo? Wondering if it is still possible to break a complete base set from one Jumbo?

Matthew Robl

Wonder what bogus partnering Topps will announce this year. If you remember at last year’s rip party, 27 minutes in, Topps announced a partnership with Budweiser to produce co-branded products. I was excited by the announcement, but not one co-branded product. I was disappointed.

Warped
Warped

for any good autos in the checklist…
they are always very tough.
They always add a bunch of really low value (Junk) autos…
most boxes will be all fluff.. and a Franco.. or 2
might as well spend less to just buy a nice Franco by itself… save the extra work of throwing out all the other cards you get.

It gets 4 stars from me bc of the design BUT as an avid Braves fan, I am disappointed to see that there are only 6 WS Champion Autos compared to the 13 the Dodgers had last year. My 3 favorite players (Albies, Riley, Fried) aren’t getting any love. Sigh.

I have collected the League Leaders subsets since 1960! I am THRILLED that Topps decided to once again bring back the multiple player cards, instead of the single lame league leader cards of the previous four years.
Good work Topps!

In 2021 a total of 12 Venezuelans debuted and participated in many games, how is it possible that their poor photographers did not even take a photo for TOPPS Series 1 cards !!!!!!!! They are embarrassing, in baseball we ALL fit !!!!!!!

Well at least Topps got the 1987 autograph cards right with Eckersley, Stewart, Canseco and McGwire, who actually played for the A’s in ’87. Maybe we’ll see an A’s Reggie Jackson in series 2, eh? No Detroit Tigers from ’87 though. One glaring error of the ’87 non autographed cards is that Rickey Henderson was a Yankee, not an Oakland Athletic, and had been one for two years after being traded by the A’s to New York. You would think that NY based Topps would get a clue, eh?

Keith
Keith

Drew Smyly now has two Braves cards and Tyler Matzek still doesn’t have one. Who chooses which players have cards and which don’t, because they clearly don’t have a concept of what fans of the teams like. Also why have a team card? Can we get more variety of players included in each set? Eliminate the team card and each team could have had an additional player included in the set.

P.M.
P.M.

I’m glad to have some more Buster Posey cards to pursue, but it’s funny that he’s in the “Home Run Challenge Code” set. Even if he were still playing, he wasn’t exactly known as a slugger like the others who are featured.

The Oakland A’s player cards should be renamed the EX-Oakland A’s. By opening day only Kemp and Pinder will still be on the roster. The rest of them like Gomes, Marte, and Moreland are already gone via free agency while Olson, Chapman and Manaea will most like have been traded away.

Kyle C

Andrew Heaney will have a Yankee card. The hobby is over.

Design is clean but it’s very Bowman like. Topps releasing Wander Franco as a regular numbered card in the 2021 Bowman’s Best release makes that his true RC meaning all his 2022 cards will just be rookie year cards. This was done before Topps was purchased by Fanatics and you wonder if it was done on purpose because now multiple top prospects like Torkelson, Meyer, and first draft pick Henry Davis will all have their rookies in that 2021 set.

Keith Turney

I like the clean design and readable player names. Looking forward to busting both hobby and retail products. As a Ray’s fan, hope to hit a nice numbered or auto Wander. The kid is the real deal.

The initial Topps release of every new year is always exciting! The design this year is great!! A sharp, simple, straight & even image and border makes it look like a cool natural baseball card. Love it!!!

James Stram

I am happy to see a fresh new design on these cards and they also have a border , which is great . Plenty of variety for those individuals that have baseball card OCD . I would be willing to wager the sales and marketing team spent many hours constructing the 2022 flagship set of the Topps cards to be loaded with as many subsets and insert cards as possible . Base variations and base auto’s 12 different sets , 6 different sets of Auto relics , Relic sketches 9 different sets . Then comes the onslaught of 10 different sets of inserts . All of this should fill hundreds of thousands of packs , if not millions . Wagon loads of parellel Ser . # d cards and auto’s . The only bad thing about this whole lineup is that it’s a bunch of low end cheap Topps paper turds . No matter how low the Ser . # goes , it’s still just a turd in the end . At least the base cards of this set have borders for a change . Too bad 95 % of the borders will be all cocked as usual . Great product if you want to buy your kid a box for a reasonable price provided you don’t buy from a flipper . Just try to keep in mind that you might be creating another baseball card OCD victim for the Topps Company to feed off of . Try not to buy from flippers and hopefully they will go extinct . One can only hope . Jim

Nice look. One question. With Topps including Franco in the Bowman’s Best set and Beckett explaining that card is the true Franco Rc among other because of being in the base set, did Topps kind of shoot themselves in the foot? If none of this year’s Franco’s are RCs, those chasing RCs will have one less, huge target in 2022 product.

Some consider it a true rookie, others do not. The market will decide in the long run. Wander Franco will still have a full season of 2022 RC logo cards and demand will likely be strong.

Ok looking cards, but very forgettable. I don’t get why Topps no longer creates memorable card designs like made in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Why not do away with Topps Brooklyn and use those designs for the flagship set? But I guess it doesn’t matter at this point since Topps will be dead in a couple years. Also don’t need the 10,000 parallels and 10,000 subsets. In my opinion it’s all a little ridiculous and makes the cards less valuable.

Hey, I think the design is easy and Ok.
But I think I’m the only one who gives the Topps 2017 set 10 stars (except for not having the player’s total career stats (not shown) on the back of the card. So only 7 stars. Anyway, let me explain:
As an old timer collecting topps cards, we adore the card with (outside) borders. But 2017, was a strange, as the border was inside the card!!!
The team emblem is somewhat laying flat on the frame – (border) which is also laying flat. And then the player image is RISING and LIFTING OUT from the frame/border. Take another look. My top 5 Topps rankings : 1955, 1973, 1971, 2017, 1969 and honorable mention – 2013 . Hope you agree? whats yours ?

Clean looking card. Topps has been relying on classic, older designs of the past. Time for them to make new classic designs. This is a good start. I can read the name plate too!

A clean, great looking improvement over 2021!

Safe, simple design. Striking resemblance to some Bowman styles from the recent past. Insert offerings only mildly different from previous years.

Doing the 1987 subset again? I figured they would skip to 1988, since they already did the ’87 retro set in 2017. Maybe this time Topps will get CLUE and picture Rickey Henderson as a Yankee instead of an Oakland Athletic as he had been playing in the Bronx since 1985 and didn’t return to Oakland till ’89.

Good looking cards. Better than recent product. I like the open baseball. Stylized look. Easier to read player name. Position should be darker.

SO MUCH BETTER THAN 2021.
joe13 is right – don’t need team logo and team name both on front. Logo is sufficient.

Also, I think it’d look better if the ball in the lower left corner was fully round right? Just a nit pick but it looks weird that its not a full circle when they have a full circle for the position on the right side and a circle above the ball. Just seems like it should be round too.

I would love to see Panini release a 2021 Franco card and ruin their plans.

Much better than the last 2 years or 2017.

Not sure how Topps does their mockups, but Panini shows 2020 rookies in 2021 designs with the RC designation to substitute for lacking photos of current rookies in their designs. I don’t really think Topps will wait this long on the Franco rookie. 2022 series 1 will sell itself. Last year’s Update lagged and Topps will want to put him in there I bet.

Topps does not do mock-ups like Panini. Anything is possible, but I would be pretty shocked if Topps releases Franco rookies before the 2022 sets.

The design is much better than 2021, player photo bigger. Topps doesn’t need to have both team logo or name on front of card. The player position could be darker not faded. Overall a really good card design.

The design is a huge improvement over this year. Unfortunately, the Wander Franco mock up means we are probably not getting a Franco rookie card in this years update set.

Really like the look. Good departure from ultra modern design of last couple years.

Really don’t like that they are waiting to release Wander RC. He was called up in mid June. Should be in Update. This once again means update will be a dud. If they aren’t going to support update, they should discontinue it.

Has a “Big League Baseball” brand look to it, which I’m not sure is a great thing. That said, I still far prefer the full borders if one is condition sensitive, so I’ll take it.

I like it. Can read the player’s name!
