Missing Extended Base Cards & Silver Pack Promo Details

UPDATE: Topps issued an official statement regarding the missing Extended Base Set rookies.

"Topps' highest priority is our customers, and we want to provide you all with an update regarding the 2022 Topps Chrome Baseball product. After discussions with our manufacturer, we understand that the planned bonus short print variations of five rookie subjects were incorrectly not included in the collation of select product SKUs. As the short print variations were originally not part of the set and later added for an additional chase element, there was unfortunately a technical miscommunication about the product mix in the production process.

This issue does not pertain to all 2022 Topps Chrome Baseball products. The short print rookie variations were included in the Hobby Lite product available only on Topps.com, and the Sonic and Logofractor Edition products, which will both be available at a later date.

For those who purchased the Hobby or Hobby Jumbo products that did not contain the short print rookie variations, Topps is providing 1 additional 4-card silver pack for each 2022 Topps Chrome Hobby and Hobby Jumbo Baseball box purchased through Topps.com, hobby shops or breakers that purchased directly from us. Topps has updated these additional silver packs to include 4 cards, and the short print variations will be randomly inserted in these packs. Additional cards may include a mix of 2022 Chrome Baseball base cards, along with inserts and other surprises.

Topps is working directly with every distribution channel of the product to ensure these packs are properly distributed through the original sellers, with shipments starting on September 30, 2022."

For more information about the process, including options for retail purchases, visit Topps' official Chrome Silver Pack Program page.

2022 Topps Chrome Baseball Cards Checklist 3

Other debuting choices include Heart of the City (1:16 packs), showcasing top players with their MLB towns, and New Classics (1:12 packs), which identifies the names that seem destined for success.

These four inserts each provide the same Refractor rainbow.

There's also Pinstriped, aka Club Plaques, (1:24 packs), another new insert. These cards celebrate top players with a pinstripe background design.

However, the set offers a more elaborate set of parallels, at least as far as the title.

Fanatics, the new owner of Topps who clearly wants to milk every last penny from buyers, deliberately waited to release all high value rookies, including those who were playing on major league clubs from day 1; such as Julio Rodriguez, Bobby Witt Jr, Spencer Torkelson, Steven Kwan, Riley Greene, Hunter Greene, Brendan Donovan, not to mention Oniel Cruz, Royce Lewis, Richie Palacios, Adley Rutschman, Nick Lodolo, MJ Melendez, Gabriel Arias, (I could keep going, but hopefully you get the picture) to exclude them from the regular Topps Chrome set that includes 5 autographs. Fanatics must have one heck of a sales team, which makes it one of the worst companies to buy from. I’m sure that they’re grateful, however, that you really don’t have a choice. Once Topps got exclusive rights to the MLB team branding they essentially had locked up a monopoly on MLB trading cards. How this was allowed to happen in the first place is pretty much a crime given how large the MLB trading card market is. However, it took the cut-throat tactics of Fanatics to really bring that ridiculous lock-down on merchandising to fruition, which Fanatics has done to a tee (“to a T”?, I dunno, but whatever means they screw*d over fans exceptionally well).

All I can say is that if I were a group of soulless billionaires trying to wring the market dry, I would definitely use Fanatics takeover of Topps and subsequent market changes to traditional card releases as my absolute reference point as to how to F over the card buying fan base. Good work Fanatics. I hope the tears of millions of card collecting children serve as a great grease for really ramming things home to fans everywhere.

It’s a bit concerning that Hobby boxes, cases, and Hobby Lite boxes just showed up again on the Topps website. Did they “find” additional product after selling out? IMHO Topps has done an extremely poor job with what should have been one of the absolute best releases of the year.

Luke

Blaster boxes have jumped to $35. Not worth the price this year.

One hobby box and several blasters. The blasters have a collation problem, it’s the same group of cards, over and over. Hobby box was nothing to write home about either. It’s below average with respect to the QC. I was able to complete the base set, so I’ll give a generous star for that.

As a team set collector (A’s and Tigers) I am furious with Topps’ fiasco with both the Torkelson screw up of not including his card in the initial issue, a “mistake” according to Topps, and the fact that not a single Oakland player currently on the team was included. While I will continue to collect Topps cards for the next 2 years until their license expires, I’m sure we are going to be in for more of the same types of greedy schemes by them which I will no longer be a part of and my collecting days will be finished. 1964 to 2024, but now time to spend my money on something else.

The 2022 Topps Chrome Baseball retail cards were extremely horrible as my son and opened over 300 packs of awful High and Low tier MLB players without a single base Wander Franco rookie card. Not sure, any father would enjoy enduring how cheated we felt after it was over.

I think this is a great product, always enjoy the different parallels and on-card autographs. Just like most card products the price was a little high to start, but it levels out. I’m a fan.

Price is too high concerning all of the issues. Price point is probably $200 for a Jumbo Hobby now. I’ll wait until it approaches that number.

So the 5 cards are not in our boxes we bought and they are going to send the silver packs to the dealers. The greedy dealers will sell these on Ebay, we will never see them and how much will these cost the people who buy them.

Great quality for these Topps Chrome

If the price was 20 to 25 for a retail blaster box then it might be worth picking up a few of them but at 35 a box it’s better to just get the singles you want off eBay. There’s literally stacks of these sitting on Wal Mart shelves and they are not selling fast.

TB

The 2022 Topps Chrome baseball cards distribution and correlation of all the various MLB STAR players and rookies appear to be deficiently anemic, as the retail product proves as equally disappointing as the hobby product.
During this inflationary economy apparently, The 2022 Topps Chrome product appears to be yet another victim of excess junk inventory.

@Frank – It’s been common knowledge for almost a week that the 5 Rookie SPs were NOT added to the Hobby Boxes…

Ryan

Trash. $35 for a blaster box?!?!
Sadly, this is just a chrome version of Series 1 Topps flagship & came out too late to be excited about b/c it’s so far past the trade deadline. No great rookies. Vets in last year’s unis.

Trash.

Franko
Franko

Got a hobby box to try and got no extended rookie in the box with 2 regular normal auto with low value and not much good of inserts. Not going to buy it again this year.

Was excited for this release, as usual one to look forward to, now just a gross complacent cash grab. What new lows can we expect? Oops missing ALL the most coveted hits, AFTER distro. What on earth….

IndyJeffrey
IndyJeffrey

All the nonsense from Topps and the ridiculous costs. I am 98% of the way to being driven out of the hobby. And I am not too sad.

Good thing for eBay — I can buy the cards I want for 40% of the retail cost.

opened my blaster case (40 boxes) no extended rc’s 8 autos, 7 wander rc, 5 oneal cruz, 12 cards short of finishing 1 set (no big names missing) 220 card set that is. best auto redemption for wander franco blue wave, sold for what i paid for the case so I cant b**** too much but maybe 100 bucks for the rest of the autos. I expected better, but not surprised, last year i bought 4 cases of hobby and jumbo this year 1 case of blasters. better value for sure.

Not printing the short print rookies and photo variations in the first print run of the product is absolutely unacceptable and honestly false advertising. So disappointed in Topps right now.

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

The SP variations are live. It’s the extended rookies that aren’t showing up.

Bryan K
Bryan K

Just opened my case of blasters. No short prints here. Nice cards but the print run is extremely high. With no key rookies to chase other than the few in the base checklist this is a weak release for the expensive flipper driven prices.

Brian
Brian

Only Topps would market auto’s of Detroit’s Casey Mize and Tarik Skubal as “veterans.” How about some auto’s of real veterans that have played for more than a couple of minutes, eh? And of course not a single auto, either rookie or veteran, from the Oakland triple A’s. At least they could have had an auto card of Stephen Vogt, about the only vet left on the A’s.

tom
tom

Topps flat out lied with their checklist.

Corey P
Corey P

I gotta ask, you created this page I think almost a year ago. How does Topps show a Wander bluewave auto on all the sales information, but the card is actually a redemption? Come on!

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

Topps releases mock-up images for every set released. I would imagine he did not return the autographs in time.

Willsee
Willsee

So in case you are interested in buying this and haven’t heard yet it appears Topps “forgot” to insert the SP RCs (221-225) that everyone is chasing.
Consider this your fair warning before you drop hundreds on a online break or hobby box. The set DOES have autos from SP RCs but no “Extended SP RCs.”
I opened 2 jumbos and got multiple packs within 1 jumbo with EXACT SAME base cards. Some packs had multiple of same base card within a single pack. I did get 10 autos, but 2 of same player at same tier. Of 10 autos, 1 color, 2 base refractor, 8 RCs and 2 “Vets” .Hobby box buyers are reporting the 4 card packs only having 1 or 3 cards.
Quality is another concern. Base cards are BRICKED in packs, meaning they were exposed to excessive heat or moisture during packaging.
Topps, how could you go so wrong?

Brandon Wielgosz
Brandon Wielgosz

Spent 500.00 on a jumbo box and got less than 50.00 in value. AND THATS BEING GENEROUS!! HOT GARBAGE !! THANKS TOPPS 53 YEARS OF LOYALTY…FOR THIS JUNK

Killbilly
Killbilly

Fanatics/Topps want to have their cake and eat it, too by printing chrome at junk wax levels, but also short-printing the key rookies. I’ve seen so many cases of this opened with not a single decent auto in the case. Add in the poor quality control and you’ve got a really bad product. Most people are getting maybe $50 of cards for their $600 jumbo boxes. This will kill your brand and justifiably so.

Hammer-1
Hammer-1

A friend bought 4 boxes of chrome. There were quite a few miss cut cards plus many cards of players showing them on the wrong team plus the normal amount of autograph cards of “WHO??”. For the prices on this product you would think TOP’S would have some kind of quality control NOT. Save your money. The chances of getting one of the few good cards is not worth the risk at these prices go to a casino you have better odds. Finally “AVOID FLIPPERS”,they only have GREED on their minds.

Weeeeeee!!
Weeeeeee!!

There is someone going around and posting on all media…. about this about how good the inserts are…
trying to pump up their value.. well sorry.. but the inserts SUCK.
way too many miscut or badly cut ie ungradeable cards in sooo many boxes I saw opened..
typical value out of a hobby box is $30-$50 and maybe $75-$100 from a Jumbo.
Just buying a lottery ticket here… trying to see if you hit the short prints…. some guy has a stack of them so something is fishy… but trying to get more info here..

Trey – the insert that you have listed as ‘Pinstriped’ is NOT called that in this product.. looks like they removed that word… the picture you have does not match the actual insert….
if you check the odds pdfs you posted .. you will see they changed the name to Team Plaques…lol
give the guy who came up with that one.. a huge demotion.

Aaron M
Aaron M

Product still looks good but have to rate this low because of the checklist….you put two of the biggest attractions (Julio and Witt) as SP’s trying to sell more product. Collectors need to looking at this money grab and think about boycotting these products. Charging more and getting less is not a sustainable arch for a company!

Brian
Brian

This set is the Oakland A’s traded away set…not a current single member of the Triple A’s in this set.

Corey P
Corey P

My rating is not based on price. We all know the prices are crazy. As Vincent Vega said, almost 30 years ago, “did you just order a $5 shake? That’s milk and ice cream…”?
This is just Paper and Ink, but for some, it is the highlight of the year in this ridiculous hobby. My advice is to wait until the NBA season starts. You’ll have Football, Basketball and Hockey and buying singles will be affordable. I’ll rip a box or two for fun, but would rather buy singles during the winter.

Bryan K
Bryan K

Always a nice set. Super high print run. If you paid flipper prices the last two years you can thank yourself for the the new pricing. You can’t blame Topps for rightfully taking back money from the flip trash.

joe13
joe13

Great looking product, $339 too much for a box of chrome. I can see where the dealers need to make a profit, but not the flippers. Huge production kills. If it weren’t for all the inserts, Topps could cut production, this would be a more affordable product.

2018 was the apex of the hobby – 200 bucks for sapphire hobby with an unreal checklist with 3 autos.

Mo P

The prices are out of control and are majorly due for a correction. A good way Topps can crash the market is by doing what they just did with Series 2. If Julio and Witt aren’t in this product, it’ll be worthless. I’ve heard others say we are entering Junk Wax Era 2.

ryan
ryan

straight up greedy dealers and flippers. these cost $200 from topps and these greedy distributors get together and decide $800 per box! wtf is this nonsense 30% markup is one thing but 10000% markup just makes these dealers look ridiculous they can keep these cases and hopefully get stuck with them! boycott these flippers and scamming distributors! panini been scamming now topps is on board f this hobby

Mark S
Mark S

GREED. This product is for rich people. Today 4/16/22 Blowout cards lists this presale price of $499 hobby and $999 jumbo ($1099 at SteelCity!?!?). 96 cards/156 cards per box respectively. DO THE MATH. 2 autos or 5 autos. $5 to $6 to $7 PER CARD!?!? Come on. Even if there is a Wander auto in EVERY box its still not worth it. This product has been full of NO NAME rookie autos for years. Even 6-8 years ago this product was overpriced at $100ish a box.
WISE UP TO THIS FOLKS. People have to realize at some point there is straight greed here. Sorry to vent but this is getting out of hand. I just want the cards to collect a set. I could care less about the 19 different color versions. Give me a base set of regular cards and that’s all I need.
Boycott this product. This has to stop.
