User Rating:

The nostalgia-packed release makes a stop in 1972 for 2021 Topps Heritage Baseball.

As expected, the yearly MLB set sticks to the standard Hobby box format that contains either one autograph or relic.

2021 Topps Heritage Baseball - Cavan Biggio Base Card

Topps has officially confirmed that the common base card for Cavan Biggio (#216) was not produced due to a production error. However, the card is still part of the Mini set (#/100) as well as the French Back variation in 2021 Topps Heritage Baseball.

For those itching to complete their Heritage set, his #216 base card will be issued in 2021 Topps Heritage High Number Baseball, which is due out in November.

If you can't wait, collectors can order a 10x14 poster version limited to 99 copies from Topps.

2021 Topps Heritage Baseball Base / Variations

The black borders of '71 are gone as 2021 Topps Heritage Baseball turns the focus to the 1972 Topps Baseball design.

2021 Topps Heritage Baseball Cards Checklist 3

The 500-card set features 400 base cards and 100 short prints for cards #401 to #500. These SP cards average 1:3 packs.

There are also multiple parallels to chase, including several that are exclusive to the Hobby format, such as Black Border (50 copies) and Flip Stock (5 copies). The Target Mega Box (Giant Box) offers Red Border editions.

As usual, the Chrome versions highlight 100 players from the base set.

2021 Topps Heritage Baseball Cards Checklist 5

Also jumping around the 2021 Topps Heritage Baseball checklist are the Mini editions (#/100) and a few different variations.

While Topps mentioned "more unannounced surprises," they did confirm the return of Action Images (Hobby only), plus limited Nickname Variations and ultra-rare Throwback Uniforms variations.

2021 Topps Heritage Baseball Inserts

Heritage MLB switches the design every year, but the inserts themselves are largely consistent. Collectors can find the standard options, such as Baseball Flashbacks and News Flashbacks, which both focus on the action from '72. New Age Performers identifies 25 current stars that have exceeded some of the all-time greats. Another choice is Then and Now, which pits the past and present in a head-to-head cardboard battle.

The lone new insert is The Great One. This 21-card set is just for MLB legend Roberto Clemente.

2021 Topps Heritage Baseball Autographs

The hits in 2021 Topps Heritage Baseball are likely familiar to collectors, especially the Real One Autograph line. These boast on-card signatures for players of today and yesterday. Joining the main lineup, the selection includes Real One Special Edition, hand-numbered to 72 and signed using red ink, and hand-numbered Real One Dual Autographs (#/25 or less) and Real One Triple Autographs (#/5) cards. These multi-signed inserts are only found in Hobby boxes.

2021 Topps Heritage Baseball Cards Checklist 6

Texas fans can look forward to Rangers Inaugural Season Autographs. The set highlights players from the debut squad and all signed cards are capped at 100 copies or less.

Other options include one-of-one 1972 Baseball Cut Signatures and 1972 Celebrity Cut Signatures.

2021 Topps Heritage Baseball Relics / Auto Relics

As for the memorabilia card assortment, there are a few Clubhouse Collection Relic versions. Beyond the main game-used uniform or bat set, there are hand-numbered Dual (#/72), Triple (#/25) and Quad (#/10) cards. The one-of-one Patch parallel for all four sets is exclusive to Hobby. The single-player relic series adds a Gold parallel, numbered to 99 or less, as well.

2021 Topps Heritage Baseball Cards Checklist 7

Look for on-card signatures in Clubhouse Collection Autograph Relics (#/25 or less), Clubhouse Collection Dual Autograph Relics (#/10 or less - Hobby) and Flashbacks Autographed Relics. These hand-numbered hits offer one-of-one Patch parallels only found in the Hobby format.

2021 Topps Heritage Baseball Cards Checklist 8

Coin collectors can check out the Hobby-exclusive 1972 Mint cards. These offer Nickel (#/15), Dime (#/10), Quarter (#/5), or Half-Dollar (1/1) coins embedded in the card. If you prefer stamps to coins, 2021 Topps Heritage Baseball has you covered with 1972 U.S. Postage Stamp Relics (#/50).

Featuring original Roberto Clemente cards that are foil-stamped, The Great One Buybacks brings collectors direct reminders of his cardboard legacy with Topps.

2021 Topps Heritage Baseball Box Toppers

Adding one final piece to the puzzle, 2021 Topps Heritage Baseball maintains the tradition of Hobby box toppers. Oversized 1972 Topps Baseball honors 50 base subjects with jumbo cards limited to 1,000 copies apiece. There are also hard-signed cards numbered to 25 or less.

Averaging 1:2 boxes, the 1972 Topps Baseball Posters set uses the '72 posters for inspiration.

And the final option is 1972 Topps Baseball Originals. The buyback series, also falling in every other box, features original 1972 Topps cards with an added foil stamp.

1972 Topps was the first set I collected. I waited years for this set. I am so disappointed. I was hoping to get that feeling of opening packs when I was 7 years old. I guess that feeling is lost.

For some reason it does not capture the originals, maybe its me. I thought 1969 (2018) Heritage did a decent job.

I picked up a few 1971 (2020) Heritage and they seemed to work. I should have collected that set but they have a lot of star player short prints that make it real costly.

Can we get a checklist of all the error cards? I.E. Arron Judge is on front of card #13 but it’s Bryce Harper’s stats. But Aaron Judge’s card is #121 (same picture). So does that mean Bryce Harper is a short print #13? Same goes for card #251. It’s Nolan Arenado on the front and Christian Yelich stats on the back? But I also have Christian Yelich #251 (front and back)? Which one is scarcer?

If you want to re – live 1972 , try to locate a bag of taco flavored Doritos and fire up a giggle stick and re- live the past the proper way instead of buying these garbage cards with their deliberately produced errors that are made in an attempt to make you think that they will be worth loads of money in the future . Save your money for some cards that will be coming out in a few months that are actually nice cards with a real chance to appreciate . Any upcoming brand that has players on the teams that they are on this year , not last year . You’ll be much happier re – living the past with my suggestion than wasting your money on these worthless now and worthless later cards . Jim

Does anyone know if the Willie Stargell stamp relic even exists? Have not seen a single one and have seen all the others…kind of odd it isn’t showing up if it exists…

You can thank the flippers out there as the reason for Target limiting what people can buy. And not sure if you saw in the news, but due to some over top right that occurred in a Target parking lot by guys fighting over cards (where the end result was one of them pulling a gun), they’ve immediately suspended the sales of them until further notice, although you can still buy online. Granted, what’s actually available online is from third party sellers. But regardless, I’m with you. It really really sucks

Karl
Karl

I’m limited to what I can get due to no retail stores by where I live having absolutely NOTHING for sale. Walgreen’s is the only place I can buy product that comes in once a week, and I’ve managed to get 5 hanger boxes over the past 6 weeks. Out of ALL 5, I’ve gotten nothing but base cards. I’m not lying, I’m not exaggerating. I have no clue if this is just some type of weird fluke or terrible collating or what. And don’t get me wrong, I’ve always liked the 1972 set, so I like these. But come on! Has this ever happened to anyone else? This is the reason for my ONE STAR rating. I’d give 4 stars the base set itself, but I can’t honestly judge the rest of it because I literally have NOTHING to judge! lol Yeah, I’m laughing, because it isn’t the end of the world. I guess in the plus side by not getting any inserts I’m technically ahead of the game in making a base set fairly quickly. Anyway, sorry for griping. Hope the rest of you have had better luck than me.–Karl

Giving it a 2 because I CAN’T FIND the product for a reasonable price. I love the LOOK of Heritage, but the prices for a box is outrageous. I stopped at Target and they actually had 2 hanger boxes and fat packs. I grabbed the 2 hanger boxes about 10 of the fat packs. The register would only let be buy ONE OF EACH! WTH?! How is it every time I shop there, the shelf is empty, but I can only buy 2 items? Screw you Topps and screw you Target. I am DONE collecting until the frenzy lets up.

Hum drum, I have many hangers scored at cost from Walgreens sitting there. And I never have the will to let unopened wax sit.

That’s about how exciting ripping this is. The repetition is awful, and the brown paper bag feel is dreary.

Official response on the promised Chrome packs in the mega boxes is that it was a printing error. The blue sparkles come 3 per box randomly inserted instead of in the “pack”. In light of the fact that prior years had parallels randomly inserted (like blue sparkles this year) while offering a 3 card chrome pack with a different checklist, I’m guessing they bagged the extra set meant for the chrome pack for whatever reason. Who knows though.

I love this set – very true to the set I collected as a 12 year old! This adult still loves the puzzle cards and the baseball question backs.
I was lucky on collation but I hear it has been bad for many base set builders. It is a pricey set though and expensive to put together a full set. Overall Very happy with it.

Just opened a hobby box and pulled a Original 1973 Clemente #50. Has a Clemente the great one and the number 21 stamped on the front. Is this a part of the Clemente Great One set or another insert. If so what are the odds of pulling this card.

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

It’s a foil-stamped buyback and not part of the common insert. Specific odds are noted on the pack you opened (1:46,152).

Did a break of this and there was only one auto in the entire case. Topps is such a joke.

Have cracked a few hobby boxes and a few blasters… have pulled only autos…. does anyone know anything about the luis robert chrome cards having the rc logo on it? Is that an unofficial error?

Uncorrected error. It seems they are all like that.

CB-FAN,good point on the exclusive licenses and I agree to a point. Topps has faltered a few times lately and drawn a lot of complaints from many collectors. I hope they correct these problems.

CardBoard Fan

@hammer-1 I too am rather disappointed in Heritage this year but Topps isn’t going anywhere while there’s no real competition as the major sports all decided to go exclusive as far as granting licenses (Topps MLB / Panini NFL & NBA / Upper Deck NHL )

As I read these comments I can see that Topps quality control is at a real peak. They are slowly moving from GREAT to sub-par. Missing cards, wrong backs, relics with no relic, etc. where and when will this end. At their present rate that stock they wish to market may tank. It’s almost like they want to turn their core people away and only serve the rich and famous. Rome fell and so could Topps. Get your heads out of the sand.

Whats up with 100 cards having Wrong back printing Error like I have a 103 Paul Goldschmidt stats on back Mike Trout on front…whats up with this??

Likely a production issue but there has been nothing official from Topps. These have been appearing since the set released.

Any word on the White/French cards quantity I have seen some on ebay with like 10-12 and others with no or one?? is there a count on these? are some short supplied??

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

No word on that.

Heritage is a rather unique set every year. The 1972 set brings back memories of an 8 year old collecting his first set of cards 48 years ago. Production to large this year very hard to hit base chrome cards to build my set. if your going to double production, double the number of base chrome. opened 6 cases this year so far, 1 case had 1 auto, 1 case had 6 auto’s and 2 hotboxes so the cases averaged 3 auto’s a case which is about normal. Take retail out of the mass market stores and sell it to the local stores and set an MSRP like you use to do. Everything is over priced now for no reason, i paid 1100 to 1500 for my 6 cases, when they should be 960 max. Sell to stores direct and cut out Distributors and stop selling to Blowout Dave and adams and the like they are all killing our hobby. But I still love my heritage. every set from every year.

I would like to follow-up and give Topps some props. I sent the cards for replacement back to them and within 10 days had replacement backs. They sent 2 sealed boxes and the equivalent of a half a box of packs, which my my math covers the number of damaged cards. They did not directly replace my mini, so I am a little disappointed in that. Hopefully I will pull one from the packs they sent. That kind of turn-around is all you can ask for considering the situation.

Some info on the Walmart Mega Boxes. Opened 5 yesterday and they were all missing the promised 3 card Chrome pack. They did each have 3 blue sparkle cards per box. I will update on Topps’ response

Saw a article where Topps said they will be releasing the Biggio card #216 in Heritage Hi Number this fall. There goes the price of that release.
I finished breaking my case, got 3 Bogaerts Jersey cards, 3 Winker Jersey Cards etc..Can’t believe they can’t mix up the selection for 12 boxes. Same with the Box Loader got 3 Bichette box loaders, and no poster. Also why did Topps start putting the buy back cards in there own pack. You figure for what were paying they could afford to keep doing something this simple.

Yep. It’s fully covered above and the current title of this page is “2021 Topps Heritage Baseball Cards – Cavan Biggio Update”

Mixed emotions. By the pulls, probably my best case yet (6th year buying a Heritage case). Auto jumbo box-topper, missing stars, nickname, color swap, and pretty good refractor pulls. Unfortunately, 1 to 2 cards per pack (mostly 2) had roller impressions from top to bottom. My one mini card had 10 percent of it chopped off with press marks from the edge of the pack, and the missing stars card had a dinged corner out of the pack.
So I have over 500 cards currently in the mail headed to Topps for some sort of replacement (most likely packs I was told by Topps), and who knows what kind of replacement I will get for the mini.
For someone that is not a power buyer….I am not a dealer or case buster….I save my money all year for my yearly case……this really takes all the joy out of the experience of opening the case…..and let’s face it….for today’s prices, what I pay for is the experience.
Just hard to imagine this kind of production error (roller marks) was not caught by QC….guess quantity supersedes quality anymore.

Typical Topps product. One good/decent card per box if you’re really, really lucky. After a long hiatus from the hobby it’s time for me to drop back out. The prices are unacceptable and have taken the fun out of it. Stimulus checks are not meant to be spent on this stuff. And I’m guessing that’s a big part of why pricing for a box that normally sells for around $80-$100 is now 5x that. I’m selling off what I got, cheap, and finding a new hobby. When you can’t afford a “hobby” due to greed it’s time to let that hobby due – again. Only this time I won’t be coming back. Poor kids….

Hi Trey. Has Topps mentioned correcting the RC error on the Luis Robert chrome cards? Also, it seems like there are a much larger number of cards that have wrong backs. Will Topps address this? Thanks!

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

Topps doesn’t issue corrections these days. Errors normally stay uncorrected. No word on anything except the Cavan Biggio base.

8 cases and no 216 cavan biggio does not exisit and got 9 autos

Decent set, but a few too many In Action cards. Gave Topps a call about #216 and the person was clueless and said they’d get back to me. I’m guessing there’s no Cavan Biggio card.

Rick King

Well, I’ve been through one hobby box. I got my 8 short prints, and only 2 duplicates among the commons.

The cards look nice, although 1972 was never a favorite set to begin with. Too much wasted space, in my opinion, with “In Action” cards, Boyhood Photos cards, and other such nonsense.

But I can’t believe the card backs. The print is tiny, and the backs of the cards are way too dark. They should think Topps Tiffany when creating the Heritage card backs. I’m 66 years old, and my eyes are not what they were when I was 17.

And they should think about this. In 1972, baseball cards were targeted toward kids. Puzzle card backs may be okay for kids, but I don’t think adults, who now buy the vast majority of baseball cards, care about puzzles and the like.

Topps is slipping, and they need to get their act in gear.

So what’s the deal with people ripping cases of this stuff, and no one can find a #216 Cavan Biggio?? What does Topps have up their sleeves now?? A common collector can’t even but a regular base set together of a mid-level product without Topps having to do something to mess that up too?

Nothing on ebay for Biggio or card #216

I got a bunch of purple chrome cards from a blaster. Are these hot box chrome cards?

Yep.

I’ve spoken to quite a few people who busted cases and no one has pulled card # 216 (Cavan Biggio). I’m also seeing the same from some larger resellers online. Trey, any chance we can get some conformation from Topps on card # 216 in this set?

Trey Treutel

No word so far.

at least topps.com had a 1 box limit per account this time

What’s up with card #216 Biggio? Is it a super short print? Haven’t pulled one out of 6 boxes. Anyone have a idea

I think I am finally through with a hobby I have loved since I was 8 years old. Topps.com is ALREADY SOLD OUT of the hobby boxes barely a day after the product is released. Resellers are selling them for $150 minimum for a very average product. I hate the greed that has taken over the hobby, everyone thinks they’re going to get a $1,000,000 card out of a hobby box of Series 1 flagship or Heritage. The average hobbyist is being priced out of the hobby by the breakers buying up CASES of products, leaving little supply for the guy who just wants to rip some wax, build a set and maybe get a cool card. So sad.

I am digging this set so far. Question, I got a Clubhouse Relic with no thing in it, its like it was skipped or they ran out of jersey or something….Is this considered an error card or is this just a bunch of crap that I got a relic with no relic in it! I don’t know how to feel about that, because it is obviously unique, but I feel a bit cheated on that one!!

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

It’s a production error but not likely one that adds any extra premium. Either Topps forgot to add the relic or it fell out at some point. If you submit a request online, Topps should replace it. https://topps.custhelp.com/

Absolutely pitiful. DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT, purchase. 2 words absolute junk. 1 case, 2 autos of who knows, and 10 lousy jersey cards, made for the trash. I hated this product I want my $$$$$$ back Topps!!!

The hanger boxes are live on Walmart Website right now for 19.99

Is Topps too lazy to reach out to the older veterans anymore? Lowest amount I’ve ever seen in Heritage. They might as well change the name.

johnucfsae

Flipper comments are totally correct, and lets be honest, the boxes are really not worth the original price much less the premium. I am trying to be patient hopes it shakes out when people over paying realize they cant make their money back.

Topps is garbage. They need more competition.

Thanks for the quick reply. I hope you’re right because I can’t afford any more variations!

Waiting for my hobby boxes to arrive. In the meantime I’m surveying eBay and see cards that have “wrong backs” – but there’s no indication on the back of the card that it’s intentional, i.e., they don’t say “wrong back” like the “nickname” cards say “nickname” or the “action” cards say “action.” Any idea what’s going on with those “wrong back” cards?

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

Seems like just a production/QC issue at this point. According to the checklist, Heritage has just five planned errors.

Mike

Awesome, thank you for the quick reply.

Trey, I’ve seen some posts regarding cards that have a player in what looks like a throwback uniform being labeled as “alternate” instead of “throwback”. The blaster packs/boxes do not have “alternate” listed as a parallel but do have “throwback”. There is currently a Bo Bichette listed on ebay that shows “alternate” on the back. Did Topps provide any info on this? Thank you in advance.

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

It’s confirmed that Alternate replaces Throwback.

Pure dreck.

And do the Die-cuts and Candy lids cards even exist this year?

All those who ordered the Target exclusive blasters last week (supposed to contain die-cuts) received generic blasters instead.

Brian

I stand corrected. Just saw a Vida Blue auto card and it uses the original 1972 A’s designation. Apparently only the cards of the current Oakland A’s use the Athletics name.

Are there Puzzles on the backs of the In Action Cards ??

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

Some have puzzle backs.

Brian
Brian

Topps spelled out “Athletics” instead of using “A’s” as on the original 1972 cards…And since Al Kaline has passed on, the Tigers now have NO veteran autograph card as Topps can’t seem to find any former Tigers players to sign for them. And no, minor league pitcher Casey Mize doesn’t count.

James Earl Jones
James Earl Jones

Glad to see some of the Reds players on this checklist have since moved on from the Reds. Come on Topps! Also, no Griffey Jr.? Happy to see an abundance of Johnny Bench cards however.

To also see JB in the Topps Project 70 is pretty cool too. NYY and LAD cards get boring after the millionth time.

Topps over did it with league leader cards, short prints should be 50 cards or 10% per series. The original 72 Topps were done much better & had 7 series for 787 cards, but Topps was better back then when they can put out current player cards & save free agent & traded players for later. Prices for baseball cards are too high, Heritage should only be $4 or $5 per pack not what these flippers are trying to rip off real collectors for.

Brian
Brian

Once again it’s time for the annual Reggie Jackson Heritage autograph card. This edition’s guest Oakland A is Vida Blue with a special appearance by Rollie Fingers on a triple auto card with Reggie and Vida. You would think nobody else ever played for the A’s like say Sal Bando, Campy, Joe Rudi, Dick Green or Gene Tenace the Menace…

Too much money for Topps Heritage. You never find it and it is so sad. We in Canada pay an arm and leg for it.

Rick King

Well, I’ve just finished analyzing the checklist for 2021 Topps Heritage, and I must say, I’m blown away… but not in a good way.

They issued 72 “In Action” cards, but instead of issuing them as a subset, they took away 72 players from the base set.

“Boyhood Photos” should be a subset, an insert, as well. The 500 card set is small, especially compared to the 787 card 1972 Topps set. And that was with just 24 teams, not 30.

If they’re going to issue a 500 card set, there should be 500 players, and issue World Series, League Leaders, etc. as inserts.

No Manny Machado? No Trevor Story? No Kris Bryant? No Marcell Ozuna? I wish Topps would just stick with players.

James Albertson

someone else said they got them at a target yesterday. guess i missed out on this too.

I see that the 21 Heritage is on sale on line from Target for $19.99 per box. The flippers have already bought them out and are selling them on e-bay for $45.00 plus. Sadly people will still buy from these GOUGERS.
Quit buying from the flippers and let them rot and go broke.

John Bateman
John Bateman

There are cards already on Ebay. Early Release?
Looks like the In Action cards are the variation.

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

Retail is showing up. In Action appears to be a base subset. The “Action” variations are only in Hobby.

The ’72s were colorful favorites from my youth so I’ve been looking forward to this release. I must say Topps’ product roll-out has been anything but orderly as of late – Opening Day checklist out a week ago and now the cards pushed back, no Heritage checklist released yet and the cards are all over eBay, and the surprise release of the Bowman First Edition out of nowhere. The Heritage cards I saw on eBay looked good and true to the original (unlike the 1970 Heritage from two years ago).

Brian
Brian

Hopefully we will see a 1972 World Champion Oakland A’s autograph insert set in the High Numbers set. In the meantime maybe a player or two from the A’s like Sal Bando, Ken Holtzman or Gene Tenace to go along with the perennial Reggie Jackson auto card in the Real Ones Autograph line.
