User Rating:

Act three of the flagship set's annual cardboard performance, 2020 Topps Update Series Baseball wraps up the MLB collecting season with traded stars, rookie debuts and a few new inserts.

The fall release is the final installment of the three-product lineup that includes 2020 Topps Series 1 and Series 2 Baseball. It also continues the Celebration of the Decades and Silver Packs promotions.

The online-exclusive 2020 Topps Chrome Update Series Sapphire Edition Baseball came later.

2020 Topps Update Series Baseball Base / Parallels

As is normally the case for the "Updates" brand, 2020 Topps Update Series Baseball is built around a 300-card base set.

2020 Topps Update Series Baseball Cards 2

This includes top rookies, some of the recent trades, stat leaders and combo player cards, as well as subsets for previous MLB All-Stars and Home Run Derby standouts. This is because neither event took place in 2020. All cards are treated to a mix of parallels.

2020 Topps Update Series Baseball Base Parallels Breakdown

  • Purple (Meijer Blister)

2020 Topps Update Series Baseball Cards 3

The Clear version is a Hobby-only partial parallel for 100 players in the base set. These are numbered to 10 copies.

Topps also teased base card short prints and super short print variations.

2020 Topps Update Series Baseball Inserts

Likely familiar to Series 1 and Series 2 fans, carryover inserts include Decades' Best, which highlights Award Winners along with the Best Hitters, Best Pitchers and Best Teams from various eras.

The 35th-anniversary set for 1985 Topps Baseball also gets another batch of cards that average 1:4 packs.

2020 Topps Update Series Baseball Cards 4

Although 2020 Topps Update Series Baseball does finish off a few continuation sets, there is some fresh content to check out, as well. This includes the #1 Prospect line that showcases a top prospect from every MLB team. The young players are shown in MiLB uniforms.

2020 Topps Update Series Baseball Cards 5

In 20 Years of The Captain, Yankees legend Derek Jeter is covered via a retrospective insert. Also new, A Numbers Game features some of the all-time great players to have their jersey numbers retired.

The inserts add Blue, Black (#/299), Gold (#/50), Red (#/10), and Platinum (1/1) parallels. On top of that, collectors can find limited autographs for #1 Prospect (#/25 or less), 20 Years of The Captain (1/1), A Numbers Game (#/25 or less) and Decades' Best (#/25 or less).

2020 Topps Update Series Baseball Autographs

Of course, these aren't the only signed cards. The 2020 Topps Update Series Baseball checklist offers the standard assortment of autographs, such as the hard-signed 1985 Topps Baseball Autograph set with Black (#/199), Gold (#/50), Red (#/25 - Hobby) and Platinum (1/1 - Hobby/Jumbo) parallels.

There is also Baseball Stars with Black (#/199), Gold (#/50), Red (#/25) and Platinum (1/1) editions, along with Baseball Stars Dual numbered to just five copies (or less).

2020 Topps Update Series Baseball Cards 6

The Cut Signatures cards are all one-of-one options displaying cut autographs for MLB greats.

2020 Topps Update Series Baseball Relics / Auto Relics / Sketch

On the relic side of 2020 Topps Update Series Baseball, collectors can look forward to multiple memorabilia sets. MLB's All-Star Game remains a focal point in All-Star Stitches, All-Star Stitches Dual (#/25), All-Star Stitches Triple (#/25) and All-Star Stitches Jumbo Patch (#/5). There are also low-numbered parallels and signed cards capped at 25 or less.

Given there was no All-Star Game in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, all the ASG cards have workout jersey pieces from 2013 to 2019.

Topps Reverence Autographed Patch is the de facto high-end chase, boasting premium designs and an on-card signature. These are numbered to 10 copies or less.

Major League Material again offers Black (#/199), Gold (#/50), Red (#/25) and Platinum (1/1 - Hobby/Jumbo) parallels, as well as autographs numbered to 50 or less.

Own The Name is another tried-and-true hit possibility that contains a jersey nameplate letter. The one-of-one cards are only in Hobby/Jumbo boxes.

2020 Topps Update Series Baseball Cards 7

Another brand staple is the manufactured relic lineup. This time, DJ is the focus, including Hobby/Jumbo-only 20 Years of The Captain Commemorative Patch and Derek Jeter Final Season Commemorative Patch cards.

2020 Topps Update Series Baseball Cards 8

Fans can find Black (#/50), Gold (#/20), Red (#/10), and Platinum (1/1) editions, along with numbered autographs. The 20 Years set has one-of-one autographs and Final Season offers signed cards limited to 25 copies or less.

2020 Topps Update Series Baseball Cards 9

Acting as a topper, the 2020 Topps Baseball Boxloader Patches set supplies relics for "50 of the most collectible cards in the 2020 Topps Baseball Flagship."

Other choices include hand-drawn Sketch cards in Hobby and Jumbo packs.

2020 Topps Update Series Baseball Silver Packs

Closing out 2020 Topps Update Series Baseball is the Silver Packs Hobby promo. The set tackles the 1985 design with Chrome for the third time. Limited parallels and autographs are a possibility once more. Hobby boxes include one pack while Jumbo boxes have two packs inserted.

Unfathomably trashy product. The hobby continues its decline into obscurity.

I can’t fairly rate this set as I’m unable to move past the inconsistency in card orientation, it’s absolutely ridiculous. I can’t remember a time I’ve ever seen a set like this.

Any one noticed that some cards are canvas feeling?
They not glossy. Think they maybe production error?

I’ve always liked Topps except for all the needless inserts, why do we need the baseball fields almost EVERY YEAR, and Mascots!? Who needs or wants a Mascot card!? I only stopped in here to say THANK YOU TREY! As always doing a GREAT JOB! Just wanted to stop in and say HI and Thanks and hope all is well with you and your family :) Stay Safe and Be Well my friend!!

Thanks, David. Hope all is going well for you.

The photography is great from a digital and technical aspect, but photographic creativity leaves much to be desired. The card style is lame, but that was treat in first series as well. The fact that this set got out at ALL is a testament to the Topps company. The pandemic has negatively effected Topps and others in more ways than imaginable. More goes into getting these cards to the shelves than these complainers seem to realize. I made about 35k turning around cards and sets from 2017 NFL, I can take a small hit on this loosely termed “update”. The inserts are ridiculously amazing. If you focus on this, you’ll be happy. And I’ll take your boxes at 65 per, hmu

Anyone in their right mind would have a much better time and euphoric buzz by going out for a king cut rib – eye steak dinner with a baked potato and a salad and a bottle of wine than paying for and opening a box of this garbage .Topps comes through again with more worthless rubbish .

WTH??? The one star is for the EXCELLENT photography. The rest of this set is a mess. Aside from the needless, randomly assorted subset cards that ALL look alike……what is up with the upside backs on half the cards??? Come on!!!! You should be so much better than this Topps.

meh product. Bought 2 packs from Walmart which includes red parallels despite the packaging indicating blue parallels.

Topps should give this a reprint and print the cards so when you put them in order on pages some are not upside down. As a collector I view that as UNFOREGIVEABLE. TOPPS IS A MONEY GRABBER. FIRE THE CEO.

I bought a bunch of fat packs as this has been the only sports card product available in my local Walmart for a long while. Just seems to be an uninspired release by Topps with a ton of meh regular cards and a bunch of uninspired inserts. Won’t be grabbing any more packs and see why it’s just been sitting on the shelves.

They do this every year to about 5-10 players. Not sure how they create their checklists, but it seems pretty sloppy.

Jamie Huskins

He has a card in Update because he was traded. This is not an acutal rookie card because he has on in S1, but Topps will put the RC logo on all of his cards, whether they are rookie cards or not.

I just got this set from an eBay auction, and I have NEVER been so disappointed in the TOTAL LACK of effort by Topps! It is almost like they DELIBERATELY went out of their way to slap their own consumers in the face with the orientation on the backs of the cards. When the backs are sorted out in numerical order so it is easy to read them, I’d say 1/3 to 1/2 of the cards with the vertical photos on the front of the card are upside down. It will be IMPOSSIBLE to display this set properly in plastic sheets if a collector only puts 9 cards to a sheet. This is so blatantly CARELESS of Topps!! I can’t think of ANY card company EVER doing something like this, and I’ve been collecting since 1965. Topps should be DAMNED EMBARRASSED AND ASHAMED!!

This is a joke right??? Topps Update 2020 is not worth it all. This set absolutely sucks. Why is there no RDB of Luis Robert in this??…. It would have made it more fun to chase…. As it is Topps has really hit the bottom with this one. Crappy cards… Not worth buying. Retail sucks in 2020… Yes 2020 sucks…. But does quality of cards and Topps suck too??? Looks like I’m getting a new hobby.

Someone mentioned the Randy Arozarena rookie is the only true rookie in the set. He actually had a rookie card in series 1 and I’m assuming this version is just because he changed teams.

2020 Topps Baseball Update Jumbo Boxes now “on sale” @ US$140.00. That’s $45 lower than my price the day of the release. Great job, Topps. You print cards upside down, charge too much for them & then make collectors “chase” relics/autos/other unneeded inserts to drive the price up. Collectors, you’re better off going to Las Vegas to do your gambling despite the restrictions…

With card prices continuing to increase, with a customer base that continues to buy it, with a company like Topps who absolutely controls the market, the future looks bleak for the casual collector. Topps created the “Update” set by moving rookie cards from the base set to this third set of the year, forcing people like me to pre-purchase the Update and when Topps decides to move several of those rookies to the next year’s Series 1, there is nothing people like me can do about it. Yes, several here have moaned and groaned and the “big evil devil Topps” will burn in Hades for the decisions they have made. But, truth be told, most who have complained the loudest have already got their pre-orders in for the 2021 Series 1, so, we really showed Topps, huh!

I agree — half the cards are upside down when you turn them over, but worse yet, half of my cards have shaded backs where the detail on the back of the cards is not readable — it’s clouded or smudged. I have not seen comments on this and there are avariety of degrees on the shading — but on some there are no stats visible at all. It seems like there ws no quality control.

After receiving a hobby team break of my favorite team, noticed TOPPS had most of the card orientations on the wrong side on the back, upside down from the normal card… I have put cards in my album for years, & they all orient 1 way… I have never in my life seen such sloppiness as I have in this set… Someone was sleeping on the job when they printed the typeset for the production… Really difficult toi keep my team sets in 1 direction…

Just happened to see 4 blasters at my Walmart so I bought one. Surprised they were there the way greedy ppl are buying every box and triple selling it on eBay. Ppl like us collectors can’t collect anymore. Everyone above is right… I got lucky and pulled the Arozarena RC rest never heard of. Every pack lad a turkey red insert along with one other insert. Biggest insert pulled was a Kevin Pillar Advanced Stats #’d /300 which is hard to get in retail. My coin was Gleyber Torres and I’m a NY fan so I’ll hold onto that. I can only guess there were no good rookie debuts/RC because of the shortened seasons and many of the guys didn’t play. Lux, Bichette, Alvarez (injured), Bart, Adell many more. We can only hope they are in 2021 series 1. And that there won’t be greedy hungry sharks again jacking the prices for what should be a collectors item and kids item.

Just received my update team set for the Tigers and noticed Joe Jimenez has an update card which is interesting because he also has a card in the series 2 edition. With all of the deserving players who actually played in this fiasco of a season, yet still did not have a card of them in any of the Topps so-called flagship series’ you would think Topps could figure out who actually plays for a team and not issue cards of players already depicted in series 1 and 2. Get a clue, Topps!

Greg Miller

It’s already been mentioned… but man.. what the HECK with the orientation of the card fronts vs backs??? I mean, what could possibly have been the motivation for that? You literally cannot sort these cards and then look through them properly oriented. That’s just… completely uncalled for. I honestly don’t EVER remember seeing that before.

RandyN

I have now opened some hobby and retail of this product and there is some interesting chase items and to Ron’s point they may fetch a little bit on Ebay. I sell on Ebay too, and yeah I have made back what I have spent selling auto’s and SSP cards so far. The hobby is about collectors and this set is not a collectable set for the most part, and that will ultimately drive down value of anything associated with this product. Topps held back a lot to put in their 2021 product. They could see what is happening in the market and knew that this stuff would sell even if a substandard product. Do I blame them….no, the see the secondary market making money so they are going to get theirs.

Randall
Randall

Topps really missed the boat on the update series. As 2020 goes this could have been a giant series with all the rookies. Instead you just received past all-stars and past homerun derby cards. Topps you missed it at all levels!

Hammer-1

Bryan F. You make a valid point. Looks like Topps is playing the Bowman game (Prospects, 1st card,ETC.) this will change the rookie cards up and coming. Watch the Heritage high numbers. They may contain RC’s on these so called prospects. Who really knows,it’s all about money.
Then come 2021 series 1 more RC’s of the same RC’s from the 2020 Heritage set. Topps seems to have forgotten a new thing called THOUGHT !!

Dear Topps “THINK”

Paul W Martens
Paul W Martens

Once you give Topps a monopoly by eliminating Upper Deck, quality diminishes greatly. Maybe it’s me, but why can’t Topps be consistent in orienting the backs to the cards’ fronts. They can’t even get this right since 1/2 the commons I’ve pulled are either upside down on the front and right side up on the back & vice versa. They’re making bank on an overpriced inferior product and should be ashamed of themselves. MLB should be ashamed as well both for giving Topps an exclusive license & changing the rules of the game for the worse…

Sheepdog
Sheepdog

Very upset with the orientation of these cards. Every time I thought I had it figured out, I was wrong. Should have just skipped this set and worked to make 21 Topps a MUST -HAVE

ronfir
ronfir

You are right, trying to sort the numbers so they are in order is a complete mess when you go and try to look at the front of the card. A total MESS!

Bryan Feddersen
Bryan Feddersen

Not only is there nothing interesting or exciting in this set, but Topps screwed up the orientation of the back of the cards so that when you sort them with all the numbers aligned on the back, half the cards are upside down. The one redeeming aspect of the set is the “prospects” subset, which is the only place where they make an effort to bring in the new and exciting players. The problems is that almost all of these “prospects” actually played this season, so they should have made it in to the base set. I mean, what’s the point of having rookie debuts that occurred in 2019? You’ve had three sets since then to publish their rookie debuts. I know it was an odd year with a short runway for preparing the release, but to make it so watered down is incredible. The most rookies that ever played in a season, and the only ones included were the ones expected to be on the season opening roster. If you can put them in a subset, stands to reason you could put them in the base set.

ronfir
ronfir

Worthless update set! Pure and simple. Don’t waste your money on this set

Ron

You know, you guys really need to do your research before you start whining. Yes, I agree the rookie class in this is next to nothing but you are definitely glass half empty (in this case completely empty) kind of guys. These sets are not designed to be rookie based. It’s about all the parallels and autos and patches and so on. Every seller on the bay is raking in the money on this set, I know I am. So please, do your research so people don’t have to fact check you.

Bryan K
Bryan K

After a few packs this is a blah set. Dud Rookies and the boring Rookie Debut Do already done rookie cards. Let the flippers buy it up and then buy it back when they have to sell it at clearance prices.

RandyN
RandyN

I might grab a little retail if there is any on the shelf, if this disappears from the shelves at Walmart then it confirms that most flippers have no clue about the hobby. The veteran cards are like the 100th version of the year and the cards they did do RC of are nobodies. Mountcastle or Bohm would have made RC class respectable. By this point everyone is tired of the flagship design and Topps should not have bothered doing this one this year.

This set reminds me of one those creaky old farts that doesn’t smell right away, but after about 2 mins watch out and run for fresh air. Don’t buy it. Don’t be stupid. Let Topps smell the creaky old fart and let them decide how they are going to get people to pay over 50.00 for a box.

Matthew Ganek
Matthew Ganek

Pre ordered a couple of jumbo boxes and a hobby box thinking that without an All Star game and home run derby, Topps would use those extra openings in the set to fill with the plethora of prospects that made their debut. I assumed Topps would capitalize on this and fill the update set with rookie cards. Just saw the checklist and wow was I wrong. I truly feel bad for the people who pre ordered cases of this set. Topps had a great opportunity to salvage this unprecedented 2020 season by creating a set that collectors would covet for generations but instead they fall flat on their cardboard face.

joe13
joe13

Too many cards & inserts, $120 for a box, not a chance. Who needs all stars & player cards that came up for a few games. Topps will be better off doing a series 3 added to there base set of 700 cards. Most of the unknown players can be put on prospect cards with 2 or 3 players per card. Better off saving your money & wait for 2021 Topps.

IndyJeffrey
IndyJeffrey

As I predicted in May, this set is garbage. The price point continues to prove the Topps executives get on their Zoom calls and laugh all the way to the bank.

It won’t get better until we stop buying these substandard sets. And I’ll start by not purchasing these cards.

The only shame is my local car shop will get stuck holding the bag. I asked the proprietor of my local shop to tell his Topps rep (if there is such a thing) that these cards are way overpriced. He came back with “…but look at all the inserts.” My eyes could not have rolled back farther into my skull.

Jon

Thought for sure Joey Bart would have a rookie
card in this set. Topps could have put a couple
of rookies in this set and still had rookies left
over for 2021 series one. Like stated above
nothing to collect in this set other then the 30
card prospects set

Matt
Matt

After Looking over the checklist I’m glad I didn’t waste my money on this product. Topps should be selling this at half price from what series 2 was. Awful.

Brian
Brian

In contrast with the A’s, who actually won their division, the lowly Detroit Tigers have 11 players plus several Miguel Cabera cards. What is Topps problem with Oakland?!?

Brian
Brian

Much like the rest of 2020 and MLB’s Little League season, for A’s team collectors this years set is a POS. Only 1 actual player, Petit, 2 rookies who aren’t even with the organizaton anymore and has been’s who haven’t played for the A’ for decades while completely ignoring players like Cahna, Diekman, LaStrella, Machin and Soria who actually got them to the playoffs. This has got to be the most worthless “update” set Topps has ever produced.

Also, dont mean to be that guy, but the lack of new RC corresponds with the lack of 2020 debuts being labeled as RC on their Now cards, which is usually a harbinger of being rolled over into next year’s set. (see Hoskins, Alvarez, Aquino, etc) I would not have pre-ordered if i would have normally bought a case for this reason.

Also, Every rookie except Yoshi made their debut during 2019 no rookie made their debut in 2020 so they all must be after the cutoff.

Robert was planned to be in 2020 after the contract he signed.

July Summers
July Summers

No Luis Robert in the base set are you kidding me? Not even a rookie debut. Only true rookie card I see in the base set is Randy Arozarena. All the other rookies get rookie debuts. I was really looking forward to this set. It reminds me of the 2017 Update release. Atleast Topps added Prospect cards this year. This year has been a wild ride for sure.

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

And Randy has a base rookie in Series 1, so it’s odd that he would have another rookie in Update Series. It could be a mislabeled Rookie Debut.

Matthew

Looks like most of the good rookies we will have to wait for next years series 1

Adell we knew was in 2021 series 1
But I don’t see Cronenworth at all on here. looks like we may have a Yordan Alvarez rookie cutoff again. That’s fine more products to put cronenworth in next year.

This set has potential if Mountcastle, Bohm, Taveras, Huff, Sixto and some of the other guys that got a look this year are included. I have it rated at 2 stars, it could go to 3 if all those guys have rookie cards in it, or it could go to 1 star if they hold all of them out. Topps probably should have just canned these and the minor league cards this year.

Jeremy
Jeremy

This has a chance to be a blockbuster update set, but I am guessing Topps will hold many of the top rookies for ’21, i.e. Ian Anderson, Bohm, Carlson, Sixto, etc.

Gene
Gene

Just not sure about this series. Am not a risky person, and since Luis Robert was the only main rookie that helped series 2 sell I’m not sure about this series having much for new rookies worth investing in due to the short season and the minor leaguers not even playing.

Moz
Moz

I am hoping something creative for this year’s update since so many rookies made a debut.

Dave
Dave

I wonder if the set will include any new rookies. Cronenworth is one Id like to get. Forget the #1 prospect cards that’s what bowman is for. Put Adell in the base set. Hopefully they’ll get a checklist out sooner rather than later. Last count I saw 143 rookies made their debut so far this year. Lets get many of them in this set!!

Decades’ Best, which highlights Award Winners along with the Best Hitters, Best Pitchers and Best Teams from various eras.

Oh look another 4 chances for topps to neglect my favorite team.

This is the main reason I collect so little of their products.

When other teams get 5-10 cards in every set and my team gets no cards tell me why I should collect anything.

IndyJeffrey
IndyJeffrey

In a ‘normal’ season, this set is padded with unnecessary cards. I can only imagine how much worthless inserts would be included to get this set to 300 with no season.

Honestly, they should scrap this season’s update series.
