User Rating:

Arguably the biggest release of the year, 2020-21 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey is the annual starting point for the flagship NHL brand.

What it lacks in premium hits, Series 1 makes up for with the popular Young Guns and a ton of inserts.

Issued later in the season, Series 2 offers another round of cards.

2020-21 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey Base / Young Guns

As usual, 2020-21 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey features 250 cards in the main set. This breaks down to 198 common base cards, 49 Young Guns and three checklists.

Collectors will likely gravitate to the 50-card Young Guns (1:4 packs) subset, which adds another crop of rookies, including Alexis Lafreniere, to the long-running YG checklist.

2020-21 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey Cards 3

Parallels include Hobby-only Clear Cut (Base - 1:96 packs; YG - 1:288 packs), Exclusives (#/100) and High Gloss (#/10) cards.

2020-21 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey Cards 4

Reaching into the brand's past, a new parallel choice is the French text edition that falls 1:30 packs for base subjects and 1:120 packs for Young Guns.

On top of that, 2020 NHL Draft SP cards are very difficult to uncover at 1:12,960 packs.

Although not technically part of the base set, the UD Canvas line is another fan-favorite. The Canvas Young Guns average 1:48 packs compared to the base cards that drop at rate of 1:7 packs.

2020-21 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey Inserts

From there, the 2020-21 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey checklist touches on a number of different insert options. Several of these are new for the '20-21 season.

2020-21 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey Cards 6

Collectors can find debuting Dazzlers Blue (1:24 packs), done on patterned foilboard with a rare Pink (1:144 packs) parallel, along with Debut Dates (1:20 packs) for initial rookie appearances in '19-20, and Predominant (1:12 packs) cards featuring color player images set against a black-and-white background. These come as a Gold (1:260 packs) parallel, as well.

2020-21 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey Cards 7

There's also UD's nod to the global aspect of the game in NHL Worldwide (1:14 packs), which offers a limited Die-Cut (1:270 packs) version.

2020-21 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey Cards 8

Likely familiar to flagship fans, top rookies from 2019-20 get a curtain call in Rookie Retrospective, while UD Portraits (Base - 1:8 packs; Rookies - 1:30 packs) is back along with the Gold (#/99 or #/25) and Platinum Blue (#/25 or #/5) parallels. This two-part set is split between Series 1 and Series 2.

Returning for another year, the Clear Cut insert selection has several tough pulls that combine to average one per case.

Clear Cut

  • Foundation Duos - 1:288 packs
  • Leaders Trios - 1:4,000 packs
  • Honoured Members Update - #/100
  • Cut Components - 1:900 packs

2020-21 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey Cards 9

Those tracking down the SSP inserts can try their luck with Ceremonial Puck Drop (1:2,880 packs) and Day with the Cup (1:2,880 packs).

2020-21 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey Cards 10

In addition, the Retail Tins have O-Pee-Chee bonus packs with exclusive OPC Glossy Rookies. The three-card packs include limited Bronze (1:12 packs) and Gold (1:34 packs) parallels.

2020-21 Upper Deck Series 1 Autographs / Relics

Even though it's one of the few UD releases not centered on hits, 2020-21 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey does contain a handful of signed cards and memorabilia inserts.

Hit-chasers can find Signature Sensations (1:276 packs) or Hobby-only UD Canvas Signatures cards in a horizontal or vertical layout that are limited to the player's uniform number.

The Upper Deck relic classic continues via UD Game Jersey cards with Patch parallels that have only 15 copies.

2020-21 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey Cards 11

Several of the inserts covered above also come as relics or autographs, such as Ceremonial Puck Drop Autographs (1:30,000 packs), Debut Dates Jersey (1:432 packs), Debut Dates Patch (#/25), Rookie Retrospective Jersey (1:432 packs), and Rookie Retrospective Patch (#/19).

I am 100% sure that the 2020-21 Upper Deck Fanimation F-11 Gabriel Landeskkog card you see when you look for them is mine, posted for sale in a couple places. I still have it. And I have yet to find another. Anybody else see duplicates of any 2020-21 Fanimation card? I’d love to know just what I have instead of selling it and finding out later it’s as rare as an albino in professional sports. What if it’s a Karl Mecklenburg?

Horrible value!!!Consistent mis-cuts, filled with penny o-pee-chee cards, and little to no value young gun players. Next to impossible to pull a top 10 player. Have spent $2000 on boxes hobby and retail and some had only 1 young guns and 90% were filled with 25-26 year old late bloomers never will be’s young guns. Can not justify paying over 100 to 200 a box product and pulling consistently pulling 10 values. Last 2 years have been this way with upper deck and this 2020-21 year is worst I have seen in last 15 years. Will stop buying upper deck hockey in for-seeable future. Equivalent of paying $50 for a mc donalds cheeseburger.

I just purchased 1 hobby box and was disappointed to be shorted 1 young guns and 5 of the 6 inserts. I literally got 1 insert in a complete box. Nick Robertson YG and Quinn Hughes dazzler are literally it for the complete box.

Very disappointed. Hadn’t bought any cards for the past year, and decided to treat myself to a box of Series 1. I’ve always enjoyed the product, and was looking forward to it…even though boxes are $199 Cdn right now. No “good” YG’s, but I’m okay with that. It’s par for the course. What really ticked me off, was 36 duplicate cards in one box. I mean, really! I thought those issues were long gone from the early days of Upper Deck. Definitely not worth the price this year.

Michael

Poor inflated product as all referred, bad centering, corners, multiple duplicates. Even weight or the feeling from cards is not ok. Front surface clear cuts, young guns with tiny production scratched. The peak of the iceberg was that one of my French young guns card properly stored after opening the pack during the weeks unglue into front and back. Huge disappointment.

Love my hockey, I know there is quality control issues but great set of rookies and suit inserts are awesome along with Portraits.

Nathan

There have been numerous quality control issues: rounded corners, miscut cards, surface damage, etc. that exceed what would be expected for a mass produced, modern product. Avoid buying any boxes, and just buy singles of this year’s product.

For the Signature Sensations check list, I don’t believe they made the SS-TK Travis Konecny – Philadelphia Flyers. There is 47 cards listed.

Pretty much what everyone else said. Rough cuts/edges, some off center like the 80s/90s, plus they misrepresented the pack count on the tin (says 10 packs of 8 cards plus the bonus pack of OPC Glossy, but they only put 9 plus the OPC). Worst Upper Deck product I have ever bought. Any point in complaining to them?

Jason
Jason

On the plus side, the design of the base cards and young guns is nice (although they could have written some words on the back of the Young Guns cards). However, the portrait cards are hideous. I have also bought 7 boxes (2 hobby, 2 retail, 3 blaster), and haven’t been able to put together ONE base set that is actually mint. Minor corner damage along the bottom is very common. I can’t rule out damage from shipping etc., but I’m careful when opening and for $100+ they need to figure out how to make sure that cards fresh from boxes are mint. I’m sending some back for replacement. Overall a crappy effort that is part of an ongoing trend. I’m done buying boxes/packs after this year.

Dennis

I spend around $2000 a series through hobby/blaster/ebay. This year is different. With the cancellation of the Toronto collector show, I’m starting to forget about collecting. Here’s the thing, I was looking forward to this year, until I was limited to how many boxes I could buy right off the bat (3). Now our local hobby shop is selling them for $169.99.

And the packs I did buy, rounded corners, and back of cards were chipping away. One particular base card, I had x5, the backs were in very poor condition.

I guess with the pandemic, stock availability, prices, for me. I’ve lost interest. I’m just interested in going to the store and buying boxes, not having restrictions.

Maybe I’ll just buy a lafrieniere on eBay. And call it a series 1.

Kevin McQuillan

Very disappointing product. I have bought this series every year since 2005. Worst ever. Inserts are terrible. Cards poorly produced. Full of doubles. I don’t care that much about the base set but my kids love to fill up the binder. Not even half way there after first box. Would never buy again without a commitment from UD to improve content

At the risk of sounding resentful, I feel compelled to report the following. Having opened 7 tins of 2020/21 Upper Deck Series one (which released two weeks late to begin with), I must let all card collectors know the following issues we are now paying good money for. From the seven tins I opened, all from the same case, came 14 young guns, of which six were doubles!! Yes that is right, SIX DOUBLES!! And to make matters worse, from 462 total base cards I am still fifteen cards (15) short of one base set!! In fact, one tin had thirty (30) doubles from sixty-six (66) base cards. I have never in my decades of opening boxes, tins etc. have seen such disgusting correlation!! The first six tins came from the same sleeve. I wonder how many other collectors are experiencing this kind of correlation. With all the reported quality issues from this product, the spiking up of prices from the distributors holding back all products to make it appear as if there is a shortage, thus raising the prices, this hobby is now a full-blown rip-off. We are being treated as suckers, or as I stated before, lambs for the financial slaughter. Am I mad, you bet I am! I can live with bad luck from opening boxes/tins and not get the top rookies or stars, but this is beyond bad luck. Now I know Upper Deck will have the usual corporate response such as “correlation is not guaranteed”, and “our suppliers are at a minimum due to Covid 19”, etc, etc. (They have been using the Covid excuse for other recent issues from products, which is another insult to paying customers) But I ask you, when have you ever had such correlation from boxes, tins, or any other packaging you opened before? There is only one way to let Upper Deck, the distributors, the on-line breakers and all others understand that this blatant disregard toward card collectors has to be stopped. BOYCOTT UPPER DECK PRODUCTS!! Save your money people. If you must, only buy older cards that have already been removed from the packaging. Stay away from on-line breaks, which will start a chain reaction. If the breakers cannot fill spots, then they will not buy products. If product is not moving, then the distributors will not be able to raise prices because they will have warehouses full of cases collecting dust. If the distributors do not order more product, then Upper Deck cannot print and sell more. Only then will we be able to bring the hobby back to better standards of quality, box correlation, and reasonable prices for us to enjoy what used to be a fun and exciting hobby. If we do not react, then this current state of consumer disregard will only increase. And one further thing. Lobby the NHL and NHLPA, with e-mails, to allow other card companies to make licensed NHL cards and remove the Upper Deck monopoly. With revenues down, the NHL and NHLPA would look at this as a chance to increase revenue, which is right up their alley.

Tom
Tom

UD needs to lose the exclusive license… period! There is no competition, no other company to force UD to put out a quality product. This is THE flagship brand for the NHL and UD. The inserts for this year are so childish looking… maybe they are trying to get more kids into the hobby which is GREAT! However, the canvas and portraits gimmick is just redundant. Besides the Canvas YG’s, who collects them? Very few seeing how many go unsold on eBay. Same with the portraits.
The quality control this year is horrible! I’ve opened three cases and the amount of miscut and/or damaged cards is crazy. Don’t even get me started on the collation. The price increase, lack of quality control and the overall disregard for the people who buy their products is beginning to get to be too much for me personally. It’s cheaper for me to buy the base sets for series one and two for a few bucks and the YG sets instead of giving my money to a company that could care less.

Hattori Hanzo
Hattori Hanzo

Young Guns have rounded corners. Pulled a few cards that look like OPC from the 80’s with the paper shavings on the side. Many packs were already sticking together. Quality control is non-existent for UDS1. This product is not worth the inflated price to hunt for one card.

So, I waited to purchase retail boxes at Walmart. They sell at $31.92 plus tax (Canadian). I purchased 5 boxes. First one I opened had a jumbo Lafreniere young guns. Note, that the jumbo card does not have any packaging on it, it is just in the box.
When I opened my 4th box, there was no jumbo card. I was really not cool with that until I opened one of the packs and got the regular Lafreniere young guns. The last box will be a stocking stuffer for my son at Christmas. I am glad I waited and gambled on blasters. It ended up being fun. In the past Walmart will have these boxes on sale so if you keep your receipt you can get a partial refund if it happens within a few weeks.

Bryan K
Bryan K

Wow! All of the boxes I have purchased have round corners printing errors and beyond poor gloss. Upper Deck should be ashamed of the quality here. I will not touch anymore of this stuff it’s garbage and overhyped. Wait awhile and buy Alex L when it drops to normal prices. May the flippers buy it all.

For Exclusives/High Gloss

It looks like for the base part of the set (1-200) The even numbered cards have English on the back, the odd numbered cards have French on the back… It doesnt look like each card has its own Exclusives /100 and Exclusives French /100, same for HG

Emily, well said. The last cheaper product for kids to afford is MVP. I still can not get over how the Lafreniere card is selling more then key young guns from the past. I hope he does turn out to be another McDavid.

Alex, I couldn’t disagree more. “Investing” is not the hobby – it is destroying what was the true hobby: card collecting. Collecting, trading, sharing is the hobby, not buying case after case of a high-end product in order to amass the most cards of the flavor of the day. And then sell those cards at overinflated prices for an overinflated profit. This ruins it for kids, for blue-collar collectors, fans of sport, and fans of the real hobby.

MV
MV

Oh and about the round corner controversy geniuses around the internet are just figuring out. UD has been doing them on MVP and Opeechee this year too. I brought this up a few months ago with Opeechee. I checked with QA at UD. Sent pics and they looked into it. This is the new normal. They agreed on the rounded corners. They were made this way deliberatly. No replacements,

MV
MV

Gave it a chance. Bought 3 boxes. Every base card on top back has rough cuts. Two jersey cards I received were both chipped all over. Even worse a Foundations acetate I got was half printed and a clear cut Nick Foligno I got was cut jagged and looked like a bulldozer ran over it.
Garbage for $270.00.

Felt kind of ripped off when they jacked the price to $120 cdn on release day. Base cards really boring and new inserts very ho-hum. Very poor collation in my box, I had several packs that were mostly doubles. Don’t think I’ll buy anymore unless the prices drop. I’m guessing they won’t until the season starts and we can speculate on these players.

TCB
TCB

Awful, awful collation. I got incredibly lucky since I pulled 4 Lafrenière in 2 cases, but many of the young guns have only 1 copy in 2 cases. But most amazingly, I have no copy of #205. How can one buy 2 cases!!!!! and not even have a complete base set!?

ronfir
ronfir

Busted two complete cases and six boxes from a third. Got two complete sets of Young Guns and one case had two Alexis YG and his Canvas YG as well. The Dazzler insert set looks amazing but on the other insert sets, not that impressed, especially the Portrait cards. Glad that you can actually tell a variation this year ad UD did great on those. French cards are sweet but you really have to pay attention to detail or you can miss them. Super Job UD!

J.R.Flood
J.R.Flood

I’m a bit bummed about this release. I look forward to it every year, but I feel like the set is uninspired. I’m willing to cut UD some slack due to the pandemic, but aside from Lafreniere, there are very few cards in this set to be excited about. The common inserts are as silly and gimmicky as ever and once more we see UD making a last ditch effort to cram last years rookie class down our throats. And on a personal note, I’m once again disappointed that A Piece of History (1000 point club, 500 goal club, 300 win club) are nowhere to be found.

We continue to see prices increase for a product that, at this point, is basically just MVP.

And for the record, I am writing this as a collector. I don’t own a card shop and I don’t flip cards on the secondary market.

TCB
TCB

The base cards are extremely ugly. I rarely say this about a design, but it has no flavour. Same with the Young Guns. The worst design in year. But that is not the problem. The problem is that they must have printed this product in astronomical numbers. If a product doesn’t guarantee a specific amount of serial numbered cards it’s hard to check how many cases they produced. But one thing is certain: for my first 2 cases, I pulled 0 YG exclusives and I believe 3 base exclusives. The last 2-3 years before, I always had 1-2 YG exclusives and 4-5 base cards exclusives. They will milk this Lafrenière cow like crazy with all those ePacks and the huge quantity of cards produced. One will need to buy 4-5 cases to get a YG exclusives. I’m not even talking about High Gloss. I haven’t seen one of those since 4 years ago when you still had some chances to get one base High Gloss. Maybe this is just my impression since I cannot support it by exact numbers. One may say I got unlucky, although I don’t believe it. One thing is certain, the only thing that saves this product is Lafrenière. If not, it would had been the worst Series 1 ever.

Upper Deck has done an interesting job on hype and question marks on this product. I find it very interesting how cases are sold out of the product and the Lafreniere young guns card as selling for a higher value then Auston Matthews young guns card. My local shop in Canada is selling boxes at $130.00 each. If hockey is cancelled this season and the Ranger rookie never plays until next year or ends up being an average player, that would be a lot of money thrown around buying this card. If the season does start in the new year, Series Two will follow with the hype with all the other rookies to collect.

This last year and the coming season has been crazy and sports has never seen anything like it since the 40’s.
What I find incredible with Upper Deck is the signature sensations line up they have in series one. The NHL players who all make big money sat around months before the season came back this past summer. Some teams never played. Why would Upper Deck and the players not build on that time and come up with a better line up of signatures for collectors and young collectors to look for. It will be a long time until you may be able to meet NHL players and get personal autographs.

UD should wait for Alexis to play an actual game to get a game photo which just can’t be possible. I sure hope there isn’t a photoshopped card (see Bobby Orr as a Blackhawk). Really they’ll only have his draft photoshoot unless they flew him in just for cards.

How is Lafreniere allowed to be in this set???? I’m so confused

TCB
TCB

*Ken. Indeed, they announced a list with 41 players whose cards could be released as RC cards. But it’s not even sure yet if they will use them all (probably). Also, they did not confirm or deny the possibility of Lafrenière being in the set as a YG or any other insert. We just do not know how much that “flexibility” stretches. I agree with you and I myself think that most probably he’ll not be in Series 1 as a YG, but as an insert. On the other hand, I don’t see them doing redemptions for YG for the first 3-4 picks. That would mean an insane cost for them because they have to process and ship all the redeemed cards. The only case in which they would do that, would be if they short printed those YG cards, but I highly doubt they will do it. My 2 cents is the same as yours :) :) : no YG from this year draft, but maybe some sort of inserts for Lafrenière. The prices will be low (hopefully) and they will jam Series 2 with goodies :)…and the prices will get high for that one.

Gary
Gary

When did they come out with these rules concerning what is or what is not a rookie card anyway. In the 90s, the program of excellence cards were and still is the true rookie cards for those players. Thornton and Marleau Poe cards in the 1996-97 sets are still considered their true rookies, so are their black diamond team Canada cards that same year. Neither were even drafted yet at the time of release. But these are still considered their true rookies no?

Ken
Ken

Alexei Lafreniere along with the rest of the high profile draft picks will almost certainly NOT be in Series 1. At least not in YG form. While the NHLPA is allowing some flexibility. It comes by allowing cards for players who were in on rosters for the playoffs in the bubble. Therefore players like Bowen Byram can have a YG in Series 1 but not Lafreniere, Byfield etc. My guess is that UD will have some kind of #1 draft pick redemption card inserted at a 1:5000 or 1:10000 ratio. Perhaps maybe they even go for redemptions for the top 3 or 5. The good news is that you’ll be able to get boxes for cheap. All the best YGs will be in Series 2, which will make Series 2 boxes go for high dollar. Just my 2 cents.

MV
MV

There is always the possibilty that the Young Guns we are looking for could fall in Series 2 heavy or as inserts as usual iin SP later. Maybe other brands. This probably won’t help Series 1 preorders but I think the gauntlet for rookies for YG’s was laid down in MVP and Opeechee. They did take pics of Lafren in uniform on ice. Saw on UD’s social but what they are gonna do what these shots who knows?

Peter
Peter

TCB, thanks for commenting. I get what you’re saying and it makes sense. We can all agree that this release will be more confusing due to the fact that not one player will have played a game yet and somehow rookies most likely will be released in advance. I myself would’ve been fine to wait the extra couple of months until the league begins preseason and that would at least eliminate the guesswork.

TCB
TCB

*Peter. There’s an entire debate about what a true rookie vs. a rookie card is. I don’t want to get into details. Let’s just say that the YGs are true rookies. No debate there. Furthermore, the YGs are the very first actual rookie cards of a NHL player. That’s one of the reasons why the are so famous. MVP and OPC have either updates that will be released in a future set or redemptions. Same thing for Artifacts. That being said, while normally everybody agrees that the YGs are true rookie cards, in the case of Lafrenière the situation is even more complicated. Let’s say he will be in Series 1. But that means that he will not have played a single NHL game yet. Normally, the vast majority agrees that a rookie card is the picture of a player that has played at least one NHL game at the moment of the reales of the card. That will not be the case for Lafrenière. BUT, at the same time, it’s the NHLPA who decides what a rookie card is. They have already announced that they will be more flexible this year about the status of rookie vs. prospect, which what Lafrenière is for the moment. In a nutshell, the NHLPA will probably make some exceptions this year and UD will be allowed to print a Lafrenière YG, but that doesn’t mean that the customers will go along with it. For many of them, I’m sure, the Lafrenière YG card will not be a true rookie card. Furthermore, for some of them, it’ll not even be a rookie card period, since the guy hasn’t played a single second in the League. I hope this helps :)

Peter
Peter

I agree with some of you that UD has done a poor job with the announcement of the release of Series 1. The moment they provided a release date, they should more or less be able to provide the checklist. For anyone who has prepaid or committed to orders of boxes, cases, etc., they should know what they’re committed to expect in the product. I myself have not committed to anything because I’ll feel more comfortable once I know what the checklist will be.

I do have a concern around the talk about rookies and if any new rookies (e.g. Lafreniere, Byfield, Stuetzle, etc.) will be considered their rookie card. If they have any players included from the recent draft, why would we not accept that as their rookie card? We’re all basing this off the season starting at some point but what if things go so bad that the NHL isn’t able to complete the season? I don’t see UD rereleasing the same rookie crop next year. I hope this doesn’t cause a different of opinions in the card community.

Take care!

I think that Upper Deck is going to come out with some sort of abomination like they did in 2004-05 with some sort of mix of “Yong Guns” and established player im the mix as “young guns” also.

Then they would announce it as soon as possible so that people can pre-order as many cases as possible. Why hide it? It doesn’t make any sense. Why do you think it’s a good sign?

TCB

I do understand that there are changes because of the pandemic situation. But delaying the checklist is inexcusable. I bet that the moment they gave a precise release date, they had a checklist. And anyhow, what can change in the meanwhile? Absolutely nothing. The season will not start anyhow before the release date. Then, we must ask ourselves why the delay. Do they hope that customers will still pre-order boxes/cases hoping that Lafrenière will be in it, although he will not be? That’s the only logical explanation that I see for such a delay. If anybody has a better one, I will be glad to hear it. And no, I don’t rate the product for the cards themselves, but for the bad release strategy. I will still buy a few cases anyhow, but I hate the lack of transparency.

Its not a good sign that its taking this long for the yg checklist….

I predict.series 1 will be a joke.

You cant fully rate a product when other time product information would be disclosed a month ahead before release time. I can understand do to covid19 issues etc but it dont help buying something that you dont know what be in it. As far as collecting i have stopped years ago i only buy and sell reason its all about the $$ not the hobby. Rule was and is drafted player must play 1 NHL game before card considered rookie card. Next thing is in Upper Deck series 1 or 2 out of all the cards printed in each series which is the only and only rookie card same goes with other products. A rookie card is only the young guns in the BASE SET all other such as canvass/exclusives/glossy/autograph are sub sets inserts not rookie cards but most consider them as rookie cards as other wise product would not sell off the shelfs/breaks.

Love Upper Deck flagship and buy it every year regardless of the YG crop, print run, look of the inserts, rarity of autos, long term value of the cards and all the typical gripes. It’s FUN and a fun product to break during the doldrums of the post-cup, pre-preseason, post-fall, pre-xmas season. I’m looking forward to the set and see if we get a Laf YG or YG canvas. That and that alone will likely determine how much I buy of S1 vs S2. We’ll see soon enough.

And hey “Nick” we saw your 4 one-star posts littered with irrelevant complaints. If it’s not a rating of the cards themselves just DON’T include a star rating on your comments! If I didn’t know any better I’d say you were intentionally trying to bring down the set’s star rating.

Yep, that’s the big question where we are all waiting for an official answer from UD.

Be very careful guys theres a reason why the young guns checklist isn’t released yet….

This was a huge deep draft but none of them will be playing until after series 1 is released…

And upper deck has been very very quiet on this front if they will include anyone as a young gun and if it will qualify as a true rookie card…

I know a lot of people who are buying cases and it could be for nothing….

I believe we all have to consider the possibilities even if the top rookies are included in some shape of form not only in Series 1 but in an other 2020-21 product cause what will the cards be stated as if no 2020-21 season takes place. Have any out there have thought of that. Before the playoffs were over many speculated that new 2020-21 season would restart up by mid Nov to to early Dec and in the online draft word was said by NHL Gary Betman hopefully in Jan. That word hopefully means alot as well all have hope day to day life but think of it this was if you were a player in any sport team would you be able to cope being away from your family for 6-9 months possibly locked in a bubble?? I would hate to see buying expensive product and no season takes place and then come 2021-22 season would those cards be once again rookies???

One of the few standard Upper deck products that I’ll rate a 4. Inserts look nice for a change.

Should be next week at some point. UD checklists normally go up about 2 weeks from the release date.

This product, if done right will be one of the best Upper Deck issues ever. The draft features a generational player, and the draft itself is deep. However, you need to pay attention to the checklist before you buy, for sure. My feelings is that Upper Deck will push back 6 weeks, at least. In the past many of the YG are shown in preseason game pics. Here is a big pitfall of this years product, you have to be careful that its not extremely short-printed. Combine that with the breakers and card grader market, the average collector may struggle with this issue. The breaker market is really messing the baseball, basketball and football market up. The manufacturers need to figure out a solution or the low end collector will walk. Really look forward to this product.

Nick… The reason that products like SP Game Used and Ultimate Collection skyrocket is simple. It’s the people doing online case breaks. They suck up all the product and make it harder (and more expensive) for the average collector who wants to buy a box here and there.

NICK
NICK

In the past years by this time around products that would have been released or soon to be released would have been posted with entire checklists base cards rookies cards inserts patch cards etc etc. Ask your self how come no details have been provided and post on what cards be such as in UD Series 1 or MVP or Artifacts. It leaves collectors hanging and speculating if or not will have the players from the coming draft. If Upper Deck were to say no the products wont have the drafted players how many would then pre order or buy boxs/cases when products are released knowing that no top draft picks in it. Nothing is being said cause its like lest pre sell products and then will see what we do with what cards be in it. Its like saying buy the product now and i will tell you later that it will be with PRO SET cards inside…..

Too soon to rate. They’ll definitely be hard pressed to reach 49 ygs in S1. Maybe we get a few yg flashbacks tossed in like they did in 01-02 and 04-05? Could be cool, but wont garner the same return as legit ygs. Or perhaps, ygs for players who never got one. Jonathan Quick, Zdeno Chara, David Backes… Past their prime for sure, but were relevant once.

People do business for the money…not for your pleasure and your fandom.. If it does not please you, do not buy it? Card collecting has become an investment, and that is a good thing for the hobby. It gives it a worth and attracts people like me.. that are in it for the ups and down. Im learning more about hockey with this than I ever was.

Forgot to mention look at current products 2019-20 such Ultimate that was released about 2+ weeks ago with in a week the master case was jacked by about $600 and go back even further SP GAME USED box back in March was only with tax $128.00 now jacked up to $189.00 most say reason not much left mean while card prices dont reflect the increase in box price, so this is an other way of trying to cash in before the real slow down in sales for the 2020-21 season.
I say let the 2020-21 Product sit on shelves in the hobby shops or at distributors or at Upper Deck and let it collect dust.

Nick
Nick

I say avoid products of 2020-21 cause chances are slim to none that a 2020-21 hockey season will take place do to the travel restriction and in no way shape of form will they try to host a regular season with all 31 teams in a bubble as they are currently doing just for the playoffs. So all product in 2020-21 will be sub par to nothing mean while the prices on boxes or case and breaks will still be charging an arm and a leg but i guess thats why they are in business to over charge for boxes by inflated 30%-40% mark ups on boxes/cases. For a drafted player to have a rookie card under NHL and NHLPA rules that drafted rookie player must play 1 NHL game before a card is manufactured and thus be considered his rookie card, now if they give an exception that be a bunch of crap cause it only means it be done for the money and profits for Upper Deck and the Hobby sport cards stores/breakers. Look at MVP already redemption’s in boxes for card/player that is uncertain if there will be any new rookies from the 2020 Draft that will take place after the cup finals in late Oct cause if there is no 2020-21 season how can a redemption card be offered for a top rookie/s. Its all for the money and nothing more. it shows how low companies and card shops will go for profits.

To the last guy, that’s an interesting point. Will Series 2 contain the first overall pick this year?

Seeing how card values of Lafreniere’s CHL/Team Canada have skyrocketed, he will be in Series 1. Even if it’s a Alexandar Georgiev style Young Gun.

But I’m with you, I will be interested in seeing a checklist. I do like the redesigned UD Portraits. Kind of gives off a Be a Player vibe.

Brett
Brett

I kinda agree with you. Draft is supposed to be early October, so obviously they can’t have any “new” rookies in Series 1 if they want to have a Nov release date.

I’m relatively new to the hobby, so I’m not sure what they’d put in there, the preview says they’re still gonna do Young Guns. But with rookies and their kinds, the cat is kinda outta the bag once the cards are out there. Can’t really put that toothpaste back in the tube.

They could maybe make cards for players they THINK will kinda debut that are already drafted, or if anyone made a name for themselves in the playoffs this year. But the problem there is, and it’s a problem I have with all the products pretty much, they’re so rookie reliant that they produce YG for guys who barely played, so there’s not even really anyone left for them to feature. Yakov Trenin has 21 NHL games played, he’s 23. Jimmy Schuldt is 25 and has 1 NHL game played. You’ve already reached pretty deep down that depth chart.

I wonder if they might re-release some old YG. Since YG aren’t numbered, they could either just re-print old big name guys and mix them all around. Might be kinda cool to pull Young Guns that don’t look alike. You could have a new run with a new style, using old pictures, or using new pictures…but I’m not sure anyone would like that. Getting a “young gun” of Ryan Getzlaf even if the picture is old…I mean, I dunno. It would still be fairly collectible, but I think the value kinda wouldn’t be there.

The more I think about the more I wanna wait to see a checklist. Might pre-order a box closer to the date just to lock in an acceptable price, but I don’t think too many people are rushing out there to pre-order a case without knowing the YG situation.

Will Series 1 or 2 have Alexis Lafrenière ? Noticed McDavid, Matthews etc are usually Series 1. But they had more time with the draft being in June. My guess is series 2 is the main buy out of the two this year.

Umm how does this work? There was no finals so no cup.

Trey Treutel

Lots of time to go for this. If the season resumes, there will be a Cup winner. If not, they will likely do a retro or flashback set as they have already done multiple times. Or they’ll remove it entirely.

It looks like a good product from the pictures.

So this product will release before the 2020-21 season begins– so only carryover rookies from this season. I do not see how they get 49 YG’s.
