2020-21 Skybox Metal Universe Hockey Cards

This product started off great and the look and feel of the cards are good quality and beautiful. But you dig deeper into this and see the expensive price tag for a Hobby Box, and see the number of parallels UD added, and it instantly gets muddled. It’s so unfortunate UD felt the need to make 3! 3! different PMGs to chase for a lot of the players, You have “Base”, “All Star”, and “Retro”. Really? Why the need for the “All Star”? adding in this subset of PMG insert probably added another 50K boxes to their print run, and more money in the end. But it’s sorry crap like this that truly waters down the value of a set. Nice try, but do better Upper Deck.

Absolute garbage. Too many issues to list here, but I will mention the biggest issue. THE PRICE OF THIS TRASH IS INSANE!! We must be viewed as suckers to the distributors and Upper Deck. And they would be right if collectors continue to buy this stuff.

terrible product. Felt like all base, no numbered cards or PMG. Base auto…you would think there would be one solid hit in a box….and i bought it for $249 Cdn, so way less than the LP $349. Wont buy another box.

How about the retail, blaster version of this product? My goodness, $50/Cdn/blaster plus tax without a chance at a real PMG? Retail-only, blue version. They do look nice though, I have no real complaints about how the whole set looks. Great job there by the UD folks.

For the less knowledgeable, retail hockey is a HARD product to have any chance at anything valuable. Young guns seem to be the only worthwhile retail hit if you ask me & that is in S1 & S2. I just don’t know what this hobby is coming to. $30/blaster used to be a nice price point but even then I would be asking myself if there is value. Call me jaded, whatever, I’ve been collecting a long time & it’s been over 1.5 yrs since I bought anything hobby, let alone overpriced retail.

Upper Deck, please, if you are listening, take a note of the hit potential & value when buying retail versions of say MLB, NBA or NFL. You guys don’t offer anything that even comes close to those in terms of ‘hit potential’. I truly wish you did b/c I love hockey & you would truly create a BUZZ for what could be pulled. Come on, you guys can do this without destroying value in the hobby versions. Just give us a little more, that’s all we ask ;)

What else is there to say that hasn’t already been covered here. Terrible product, even at $150 a box. All these “SP” cards and gimmicky inserts are absolutely worthless. I don’t get the appeal of PMGs either. I think they are ugly as hell and the QC is notoriously terrible I can’t wait for Upper Deck to get some hockey competition. It really is a shame because there is so much demand for a good product, and with the current technology the possibilities are endless but we are stuck with this garbage for now.

Dinged corners and chipped edges in every pack. Only one sticker auto. Not sure why all the All-Star SPs are cut wider than other cards (was that on-purpose or just a QC issue with my box?). Also, I have a hard time calling the AS & RCs “SPs” when they fall 3:4 packs. In short, if they were trying to nail the design excess of the late 90s, UD succeeded there. I usually buy 2-3 boxes of a product before I arrive at a decision, but this, even if it were half-price, was just… awful.

I got a box myself but I agree at this price not really worth it. Also I seen many break of this product; won’t touch it anymore sorry.

I really feel sad for all you north amercian collectors. $350 is an insane price for this product. However, in Sweden they cost araoung $160. But UD made it clear to retailers in Europe not to sell outide of EU.

It is seriously equal to about two retail boxes. More like $45. Period.

For the amount of money you spend per box, it is not worth the hits that come out of it.
Would much rather open 2 SPX or SP Game Used or Black Diamond.
I think it should be worth around $175 per box. NOT $350+

Horribly priced, and for those complaining that we’re seeing this price because of breakers, I was somewhat amused to see a large local breaker struggling to get even a couple of these case breaks filled. Folks are plain tired of this Vote with your dollar friends. Let your locals. know, the hobby won’t float on this business model.

Is there something more to say? It suffices to read all the other comments. I will only add that for this absolutely ridiculous price, the QG is an absolute garbage. In EVERY SINGLE pack I opened, there were 1-2 damaged cards. But not a bit of wear, nooooo, a big huge chunk of the card was simply damaged. You could see it from a plane. Honestly, I don’t understand what is going on, but something will have to change. It is not normal that stores charge 350$ CAD for this absolute garbage! Stay far, far, far away from it.

Absolutely ridiculous product quality. Chipping on edges on an over-inflated price point.

I saw a few case break and, so far, I cannot believe that boxes of this product cost over $300.00. Not long ago, you could get a box of Premier for that price. For a couple of years I havé Been telling people that group break would bring the end of the hobby as we Know it Do you think somebody would go in a hobby store and get a box for that price to get ONE auto? There’s something Awfuly wrong going on.

Just saw a case break…what a pile of fresh, lactose-intolerant doo doo. Not worth $350 CAD, not worth $200 CAD, not worth $150 CAD…this is Fleer Showcase without the Rookie Patch Auto. UD please stop with the drab colours and busy, busy designs.

Where ever the price gouging is occurring, hoping, no wishing you get stuck with this pile of crap and you end up losing money on it for your greed.

Buyer Beware. LOOK at all that chipping on the PMGs….what a waste. And your not even guaranteed a sticker auto a box.😵

Saw the price months ago was $150, would have grabbed 2 boxes for sure. Today I see $350 plus tax, so you are looking at $400CAD for 1 sticker auto (with zero legends in the checklist), a bunch of fun but gimmicky and probably worthless inserts, and hopefully a nice PMG. I’m a serious collector who’s literally every product the last 2 years, but this price tag keeps me from getting in the car and driving to the store. Sad to see

Upper Deck please just wave the white flag and surrender! You have no business being in the hockey business anymore!

I was really excited when they announced this product. Then they kept pushing it back… then they tripled the price. The cards look great, but looks like I’ll just keep to buying singles

Not a chance I will pay that amount…sorry Upper Deck you lost another customer until The Cup is released…if that is even going to be not a stupid price.

Looks nice for the most part. The price point, though, for those wondering is likely UD hedging their bets on the PMGs. The market for those are crazy. Slap PMG on anything and people think it’s gold.

Indeed, that is a problem. I’m guessing a store pays for this product around 125$-140 CAD. The price some stores charge online for Skybox is 350$… What is more to say? It seems like a nice product, but they almost tripled the price. The reason they will invoke (partially true) is that the product is quite limited. Also, since this new madness with sealed hockey boxes, stores complain they get less and less stock from dealers. Thus, in order to keep their turnover steady, since they sell less, they must sell more expensive. The thing is Upper Deck produces more and more actually and the three store owners I know, all made more profit than before the pandemic, when you could still get a hockey box for a decent price. The truth must be somewhere in the middle. It’s true that they get less stock than before, but they also make more money than before too. This product shouldn’t be more expensive than 200-225$.

The product looks cool but this flipper breaker pricing needs to end. I will not pay 300 for any box…ever.

Spot on. This stuff looks kind of cool but its basically a busier OPC platinum. +$300 for a box. Not a chance. I didn’t see a Matthews auto and the McDavid autos are super rare. Upper Deck is getting really greedy. A lot of signs pointing to the downturn of the industry. Hopefully not though. I still enjoy collecting but I’m not paying this much for something like this.

Yeah, seems outrageously overpriced. Should fit in right around OPCP’s price point, right?
It’s a shame, because it looks like a fun product.
