User Rating:

Honoring 150 years of professional baseball, 2019 Topps Series 1 Baseball kicks off the MLB collecting season with a design refresh that taps more into the earlier framed looks, but with a modern flair.

Like many prior years, including 2018, formats again include Hobby with one autograph or relic in each box, and Hobby Jumbo, which has two relics and one autograph per box.

However, the standard Hobby format sees an overhaul that takes it from 36 packs at 10 cards per pack in 2018, to 24 packs at 14 cards per pack in 2019. Jumbo also has a decrease in pack size but the format is the same otherwise.

2019 Topps Series 1 Baseball Base

The standard flagship base set of 350 cards showcases top veterans, rookies and teams. There are also subsets for Future Stars, League Leaders and World Series Highlights.

2019 Topps Series 1 Baseball Cards Checklist 2

The 2019 Topps Series 1 Baseball base parallels remain true to past releases, with Rainbow Foil (1:10 packs), Gold (#/2,019), Vintage Stock (#/99), Independence Day (#/76), Black (#/67 - Hobby/Jumbo only), Mother's Day Pink (#/50), Father's Day Blue (#/50), Memorial Day Camo (#/25), Platinum (1/1) and Printing Plates (1/1).

Additional choices include the all-new 150th Anniversary (1:6 packs) logo edition for the full lineup, plus Hobby-only Clear for just 100 base subjects in the 2019 Topps Series 1 Baseball checklist.

As is normally the case, the SP/SSP Variation cards are back with different images for multiple players

2019 Topps Series 1 Baseball Inserts

Celebrating the past, highlighting the current stars, and looking ahead, the insert selection in 2019 Topps Series 1 is plentiful and features many new options. Evolution focuses on the many changes in the game over the years, such as equipment, logos, stadiums and uniforms. Showcasing a modern star alongside a retired legend, Greatness Returns identifies standouts across multiple eras. Moving past the field of play, Revolution of the Game is for the game-changing subjects who weren't players.

2019 Topps Series 1 Baseball Cards Checklist 3

Just as 2018 paid tribute to the 1983 design, 2019 brings a special insert for 1984 Topps Baseball with an added 35th-anniversary logo for the '84 set.

Tying into the sesquicentennial celebration, the 150 Years of Professional Baseball line offers 50 of the Greatest Players, 50 of the Greatest Moments, and an assortment of the Greatest Seasons during the last century and a half.

2019 Topps Series 1 Baseball Cards Checklist 4

For retail formats, there are a few exclusive options. That includes the past and present stars from the Arizona-based Cactus League Legends (Display/Gravity Feed) and Florida-based Grapefruit League Greats (Blaster) inserts.

2019 Topps Series 1 Baseball Cards Checklist 5

All inserts above add 150th Anniversary (#/150), Red (#/10) and Platinum (1/1) parallels.

One additional option is the Iconic Card Reprints set that revisits classics cards from Topps' history. These, too, have a 150th Anniversary (#/150) parallel.

2019 Topps Series 1 Baseball Autographs

Although the hits are spread out, 2019 Topps Series 1 Baseball has quite a few lines to track down, especially autographs.

Acting as the main signed set, the 1984 Topps Baseball Autograph insert brings the '84 design back into focus for its 35th anniversary. Parallels consist of 150th Anniversary (#/150), Gold (#/50 or less), Red (#/25 or less - Hobby only) and Platinum (1/1 - Hobby/Jumbo only).

2019 Topps Series 1 Baseball Cards Checklist 6

New to 2019 Topps Series 1 Baseball, the Legacy of Baseball Autographs insert is not limited to one period of the game, instead highlighting stars from throughout the entire run. Parallels include 150th Anniversary (#/150), Gold (#/50 or less), Red (#/25 or less) and Platinum (1/1). Capped at only five copies, the Legacy of Baseball Dual Autographs set finds player connections among multiple decades.

Concentrating on the 2018 playoffs, all the Postseason Performance Autograph and World Series Champion Autograph cards are numbered to 50 or less, adding Red (#/25 or less) and Platinum (1/1) parallels.

There are also Cut Signatures (1/1), Greatest Moments Autographs (#/25 or less), Greatest Players Autographs (#/25 or less), Greatest Seasons Autographs (#/25 or less), Iconic Card Reprints Autographs (#/25 or less), and Revolution of the Game Autographs (#/199 or less).

Exclusive retail choices include Cactus League Legends Autographs (#/10 or less) and Florida-based Grapefruit League Greats Autographs (#/10 or less).

2019 Topps Series 1 Baseball Autograph Relics

But that's not all to be found in the 2019 Topps Series 1 Baseball checklist. Each numbered to 50 or less, signed memorabilia choices include Major League Material Autograph, Postseason Performance Autograph Relic and World Series Champion Autograph Relic. All three feature Red (#/25 or less) and Platinum (1/1) parallels, as well.

2019 Topps Series 1 Baseball Cards Checklist 7

Supplying a dose of high-end MLB collecting to the flagship release, Topps Reverence Autograph Patch cards, numbered to 10 copies, return with on-card signatures and quality memorabilia pieces. These signed inserts, along with the Red (#/5) and Platinum (1/1) parallels, are exclusive to Hobby/Jumbo boxes.

2019 Topps Series 1 Baseball Cards Checklist 8

The manufactured-relic Retro Hat Logo Patch Autograph (#/10) and 150th Anniversary Medallion Autograph (#/10) cards are also Hobby/Jumbo exclusives, while the 150th Anniversary Commemorative Patch Autograph (#/10) cards come only in Blaster boxes.

2019 Topps Series 1 Baseball Relics / Sketch

Offering many of the 2019 Topps Series 1 Baseball themes in an all-memorabilia form, relics help close out the flagship set. Choices include 1984 Topps Baseball Relic and Major League Material, each with 150th Anniversary (#/150), Gold (#/50), Red (#/25) and Platinum (1/1 - Hobby/Jumbo only) parallels.

Providing more rarity are the Postseason Performance Relic (#/99) and World Series Champion Relic (#/99) cards. These only have Red (#/25) and Platinum (1/1) versions.

Joining the one-of-one In the Name Relics featuring All-Star Game workout jersey letters, the new Historic Homes Relic set honors legendary ballparks.

Only in the Hobby and Jumbo formats, the manufactured duo for 2019 includes commemorative Retro Hat Logo Patch and 150th Anniversary Medallion relics.

The 150th Anniversary Commemorative Patch cards come only in relic Blaster boxes. All the manufactured relics work with 150th Anniversary (#/150), Gold (#/50), Red (#/25) and Platinum (1/1) parallels.

2019 Topps Series 1 Baseball Cards Checklist 9

Finally, totaling over 100 options, one-of-one Sketch cards are exclusive to Hobby boxes.

2019 Topps Series 1 Baseball Silver Packs Promo

Of course, 2019 Topps Series 1 Baseball manages to squeeze a little more in via the 2019 Topps Baseball Silver Packs promotion. Applying foilboard to the 1984 design, these exclusive cards are an incentive to order Hobby flagship boxes. Collectors are awarded one pack for every Hobby box and two packs for each Jumbo. Packs also include random parallels and autographs.

2019 Topps Series 1 Baseball Flagship Design

Walking the line between retro designs of the past and the current styles featured over the last few years, the base set in the 2019 Topps Series 1 Baseball checklist is showcased with a partial frame rounded off in the corner. These border frame colors mirror the team in question. Outside of this is the faint, pixel-like background that gives the design a little more character.

The border is also the place used to indicate parallel versions as the exterior portions take on the color fill.

2019 Topps Series 1 Baseball Cards Checklist 10

I like Excellent Quality Cards on Topps Baseball forever. I like the design very much. I have collecting Baseball Cards, Since 1970. I enjoy it buying Topps Baseball Cards forever.

Does the Topps flagship use similar or the same card stock as Bowman paper cards?

Best part of this set for me was the Ronald Acuna highlights that came in hanger and blaster boxes. Other than that, the set was a bit ho-hum. Not to mention I received two Pedroia 150 year patch cards in a row. If you’re wondering, that’s not a good thing. I don’t work at ESPN.
I don’t like gear/relic cards. I don’t want a scrap of jersey or jock strap. I don’t want a splinter from a bat, or dirt from the park. Especially when they produce so many that the card is basically worthless and bulky. Give me limited runs, variations, buybacks and rookie cards.

Has anyone noticed the artwork on card #101 for Michael Taylor? Above the foot on the right-hand side, there is a chip torn out of the picture that landed directly horizontal near his left kneecap. You can see it with the naked eye, but a magnifying glass shows better detail.

bought a case and pulled a carlos correa auto hat patch 6/8 is this a different parallel? as i see the checklist is numbered to 10? could it be an error? any help would be be great thanks!

Every card I have seen is numbered to 10 except for Correa. It just means there are eight copies instead of 10 like the rest.

Went to Meijer’s today & bought some single packs of 2019 TOPPS… TOPPS made a “Purple” Parallel set for Meijer’s at the rate of 2 cards per promo pack… Purple is very beautiful on these cards…

I have also heard TOPPS has done the same for Walgreen’s with “Yellow” Borders… Has anyone see the Walgreen’s Parallel yet??

I have purchased Topps cards now for over 50 years and have been a fan of Topps and only Topps during that time.

In recent years the variations have gotten so out of hand that the value of finding one does not provide the same enthusiasm as it had when there were less variations. Series 1 set has 102 variations which is a third of the series. I would rather see 10 variations perhaps focusing on the Legends rather than a current player in the dugout.

Since this brand was sold a few years back, the quality of the product has diminished and my interest in the sets have diminished.

Unfortunately, my collecting will consist of collecting older cards rather than shell out money for a brand that has been reduced to another Panini.

Just got my first packs. I had resisted given the bad reviews. But I think the cards show much better in person than digitally on the web. Good looking cards and design in my opinion. But disappointing hit odds – especially retail.

odds are bogus. this is an incredible ripoff. youre better off buying parallels on eBay

Just seems a bit boring to me. No “spark” to the base set whatsoever. Can anyone tell me “Does the Topps company NOT rate Mike Schmidt as one of the best players in the MLB?” Last couple years he has not been featured in ANY of the insert sets, whereas some very average players, as well as many unproven rookies HAVE been. In the last two years, Carton, and 1 Ashburn insert are the only HOF Phillies. What about Roberts and Schmidt? How about some Philadelphia A’s like Jimmy Foxx, Lefty Grove, or Connie Mack even?

Has anyone seen the Yellow Walgreen cards? Keep checking the stores, but no luck. Also disappointed the Topps would pick Meijer for the other subset. Nothing against Meijer, but they only have stores in 6 of the 50 states.

Again- the Sp from last years Topps Pedro Martinez is the same pic as this years SSP? How the hell does that make sense? Also the Jumbo pulls are horrible, absolutely positively horrible. Stick to hobby.

Jon, as I am sorting my set I think the answer to your question about white vs. grey borders appears to be nothing but a quality of printing issue with the grey ink on the front of the cards. I have noticed this with the players names as well. For example #92 Clayton Richard name is easy to read on some cards but almost invisible on others (Trey, I wish we could submit photo’s here). The quality control of card centering appears way of to me this year vs. the last two ‘full bleed’ card designs. (Trey, do you know if Topps uses different printers every year?) If this is a new one I hope they go back to who they used the last two years, hardly an off center one in the bunch.

As far as my review of the card design I think it is the ugliest since 1970, which is this years Heritage (I’m skipping Heritage this year and waiting for Stadium Club as I build two sets a year). As you can see I’m not a fan of grey as an ink choice (blah, like the winter sky, nothing about it says ‘summer’ to me). I do love the action shots but the color seems off to me this year, photo’s don’t ‘pop’ like last two years. The choice of the white fade on the left side followed by the grey border might be ‘dulling’ the player photo image, might be an ink issue, or a combo of both, not sure. As you can see I am not a fan of borders, especially off centered with various shades of grey.

I got my normal three boxes and supplemented with the same amount of retail as in the past and it does appear I am going to get the full set so to me the collation is good. I got two good auto’s and a Mike Trout relic so happy about that (no ‘fake relics’ :). The fake relics I got for the first time last year in ’18 Update hobby made me seriously consider switching to Panini but I did the math and even with the quantity of cards per box cut back by Topps the price was in line with Panini. So I decided the possibility of getting one fake relic is better than buying all fake cards. Plus all the Panini set sizes are too small for my tastes.

Love the ‘Home Run Challenge’ cards, keeps the set interesting all throughout the season last year and I won two, including a Mike Trout. I pulled 5 of them in my three boxes this year, seem to be more plentiful than last.

Like the ‘Advance Stat’ inserts but the rest- same old, same old.

OK design. I agree too many subsets. I still got a set out of a jumbo box which is what I go after. Too many complainers out there. If you don’t like the product, don’t buy. I guess I got lucky on my box as I pulled a Mookie Betts Hat logo /150, a Rookie redemption auto A, and a one of one In the Name M patch of Charlie Blackmon. Did OK on my 2 silver packs also, Blue Ozzie Smith /150 and Orange Judge /25. Been collection since early 1990’s and seen it all. Good & bad. People just want too much from any product.

This specific set of cards is a total joke. Whoever they have working in the creativity and design Department must be zombies. The advanced statistics cards and the photo variation cards are a joke. The Redemption Auto cards are also a joke. The Michael kopech photo variation card is so pathetic that it takes you awhile to find the player amongst the grandstands and the field and the gigantic Vienna beef hot dog sign along the wall of the ballpark. Topps really needs to hire some new and creative and artistic design people because the ones they have now they probably have do their work from kindergarten desks. Why don’t they just stopped producing Topps cards all together. Jim

Topps is placing inserts into certain products only – like the 100 stars of the game in retail single packs. Really hard to complete that set if you want to.
Does anyone know if there is a print run for the green parallel of the 150 greatest insert set that is in blisters with three single packs?

Mike Smith

I just don’t see the value in these cards you buy a set and its all base cards and inserts worth nothing. No exciting parallels or rookie cards like Panni does with Optic or Prizm. Wish Topps did something like that.

Well, what you are describing is Topps Chrome. That comes later in the summer.

Hey, its Topps what do you expect. A nice design but again a but of a generic look. inserts are always good but never enough. I bought my Hobby box and got an autograph of a player I never heard of and 2 relics that are basically common players. Buf up the inserts and cut down on base cards in each pack to make it a bit more enticing to purchase.

Not an overwhelming amount of Rookies, too many inserts and my mostly glaring issue is that RON GUIDRY season is not ranked in greatest seasons. Come on. As a Red Sox fan, it was most impressive. 25 wins. A number that has only been surpassed once (Bob Welch, 27, 1990) since is quite a total, especially when you consider that 20 wins is becoming more of a rarity. 3 losses. An .893 win percentage for starting 35 games is astounding. I could go on and on about eye popping numbers. 16 complete games, 9 shutouts, 273 innings pitched, an ERA of 1.74, and an ERA+ of 208 (100 being considered league average), 18 strikeouts in one game against the California Angels, 248 strikeouts for the season. All of these are definitely numbers that would be the epitome of a Cy Young winner.

I’ve been collecting Topps for 40+ years and I am a Master Set Builder. This will be a set to remember for a long time. Every base player is an action photo with a great design. No one player standing there posing. Great action photos. I really like the stadium shots, but more importantly the stats of the teams, their lineups and starting rotation. It’s basically asking Google/Alexa or Apple/Siri everything you need to know about the players and teams with their respective stats on the back of the card. League leaders, rookies and future stars are identified and labeled on the front honoring them like a diploma or special ‘certification’ on a resume. Inserts are standard, yet way too many once again. Overall a VERY solid set worth collecting with a ton of upside. I tip my cap off to you Topps!

Jeff
Jeff

Ripped my normal case of Jumbos. It was very disappointing to see no variations. Also the rookie assortment is regrettable but that is no fault of Topps… later issues will be loaded with Vlad Jr, Tatis etc.

Insert wise with only 4 inserts per pack if felt a little light given the size of some of the insert sets.

That said, I like the addition of the 150th Anniversary parallels (across regular cards/inserts/etc). The actual jersey/relic hits were nice and many lower #ed. The autos were mostly forgettable but did hit one of the 1/1 cut autos (Spahn).

So would normally given this 3 1/2 to 4 stars but when you lower the card count you shouldn’t also be chintzy on content.

This product heralds in the new junk era.

bought 3 blasters and now have a stack of trash to deal with. Not one numbered card. I did hot a home run card though…wooo!

Avoid and save your loot for Bowman , Chrome, and Ginter. Series 1 is a waste of money, cardboard storage boxes, and real estate.

Have always been a set builder. However, in 2018 after nearly completing series 1, I threw in the towel during series 2 and purchased the “holiday” set at Target with a birthday gift card.. Buying Topps packs gets you a shot at the inserts and while most are forgettable, some are keepers. The new cards are good (borders-what a concept!)and I will buy for fun, until the set comes out during the summer.

Anyone know anything about grey borders on the cards ? I have many cards that are dupes
but some have white and others grey for a
border. There is no serial number on these
cards.Thank you for any help.

The back of the stadium cards have a list of Starting Line Up and Starting Rotation. I was going to make some team sets, however, there are some cards that are of prayers not listed on the back of the team cards. If I make a team set, do I include only those that are listed or do I also include those not listed. If I include those not listed, how do I find out all the players of each team that have cards. Is there a website that has this info. THANKS.

Not too bad. First box of Topps I have bought in years because the design to me is much better than what we have had lately. Like a couple collectors above, I bought a jumbo and only got one auto (Solarte) and one GU (Trout Hat Logo/50). A little concerning that these boxes are short but also relieved it just wasn’t mine. Was also pleased I got 349 of the 350 for the complete base set, which along with 1984 retro stuff, is what I really wanted.

I drew sketch cards for this set and had a blast depicting the current and past stars of MLB. As a baseball fan myself, I also picked up a box of jumbo. Disappointed that there were fewer subset cards and no photo variations, but I still liked the card design and really love the silver pack cards. I think the sketch cards I worked on are even more rare this year than last year and if you want to see some of what I created please visit my website: http://mattstewartillustrations.com/topps-2019-baseball-series-1-sketch-cards/

Bought my first 2019 Series 1 pack yesterday. Brings back many memories, opening that first pack. First card out of the pack was a base Kris Bryant. The pack was retail/ gravity feed from Target and I noticed the pack price was $2.99 for 16 cards. A few nice inserts, Brooks Robinson Cactus League card was my favorite. Overall, I like the 2019 design better than 2017 and 2018. Looks like some nice variations and SSP cards in the set. The Buster Posey variation is a nice looking card. I don’t collect entire sets, just the cards I am most interested in for my own collection. Lots of inserts I can see I will be on the look out for from this set.

2019 Topps is not the best I have seen. The design is ok….but the changes in jumbo and hobby boxes…ie…less cards. They took the SP completely out of jumbo box and that sucks. Those packs should be 50 cards and this is why I will not buy jumbo boxes again……

I’n no “shill”, as I have my own opinion. I like what this set has to offer. It’s a nice box for price and I’m really into a lot of the sub/insert sets. To each their own. Maybe since none of the above are going to purchase any, I can have a nice selection to choose from at the shops. I’m a “glass half full” kind of person.

Does everyone want some cheese with your whine? Geez .. dont complain. just dont buy. .We are lucky that Topps and this product even exists or is not just a mass produced novelty for kids. IMO I think topps has done a pretty good job of ressurrecting a pretty much dead industry in the late 90s. . I dont know the facts but i would guess that demand is strong as ever, or at least close to what it was in 90s before it crashed. That is why prices are high and production keeps going up every year. Simple economics, Topps is just keeping up with demand. Most of their products are sold out in one day after release on their website. You can thank whoever invented the internet for prices not being higher than they are now. Although I have to believe that all the new young stars the game has produced in the recent years such as Trout, Judge, Ohtani, Soto, ect. have contributed to the demand considerablly I still must give most of the credit to Topps for completely revolutionizing their product with the autograph, short print, paralell, relic and patch cards. Thanks to these additions the hobby is still alive and exciting as ever for fans and collectors of all ages. Some people are calling these cards useless crap but they keep buying it because they know not all of it is crap. In fact those same people know that some of those cards they see in the checklist and are buying a chance of getting are like striking Gold! Keep it up topps. I like the design and i love the 150 greatest cards redemptions! They’re a long shot but long odds are better than none!…….. And im not 100% sure about the others but I would assume that like Guerrero jr. those guys havent been called up yet so they are MINOR league prospects and wont have a topps flagship rookie card until they are a rookie in the MAJOR league. Try bowman, pro debut, or heritage minor if you want cards of minor league players. vlad jr. will probably be called up this yr and be in the update series.

When if ever will Topps quit putting in so many sub-sets as well as relic and autograph cards that you can’t even give away for free. I love building sets but they drive you away with all the USELESS crap in a box that no one really wants. The amounts of doubles are getting sad also. Looks like the only stable way is to buy the factory set and there may be a good insert pack in there. Who knows ???

I do like the redemptions for 150 Greatest Cards….nice names on the checklist and since they are originals and no autographed it shouldn’t take years to receive them. i will have to open some before i give more than 3 stars. Hard to review until the cards are actually released, but I do wonder who they have selecting the players to be released in this set. Take for example the Indians, where nearly 60% of the cards are for players who will not be on the Indians roster in 2019. I thought the Topps set was supposed to represent the current year, not the previous year. It always disappoints me, the effort they put into the selection of the players. And as others have said… WAY, WAY too many inserts.

Don Stedem
Don Stedem

This has to be the LONGEST checklist I’ve ever seen. Very boring design, way way too many subsets. This industry is getting too diluted, reminds me of the early ’90s when everyone and their brother came out with cards. The industry got greedy!!! Not really excited about this never-ending list. Topps, you’re better than this!!!

Brian F
Brian F

As usual Topps ignores the Detroit Tigers, especially in the 1984 subset. Not ONE of the Tiger hero’s that led the AL wire-to-wire and won the 1984 World Series. No Tigers in the base 1984 set, no Tigers in the relics set and only an autograph of Al Kaline who retired 10 years earlier in 1974! How lame is this screwed up outfit?!? Where are the latest Hall of Famer’s, Jack Morris and Alan Trammell? Or Kirk Gibson, Lance Parrish and Willie Hernandez? Get a clue Topps! Your product continues to SUCK, especially with all these moronic subsets!

Ugh. Yet another year of the base set featuring a predominance of contorted, in-game faces. This is the 25th anniversary of that trend, which started in 1994. Maybe they should commemorate the silver anniversary of this nonsense.

I love the change in design. 2016 was great and the representation of the digital era was perfect. Not much changed in design until now. I think once everyone opens there first pack and it doesnt feel like a recycled version of the previous year it will grow on them. Love the Retro hat relic and cant wait to see the checklist on that. The 84 style card design as a Mets fan is iconic as a Doc and Daryl fanatic. (Cant wait for next year cause 85 was my first year of collecting). Topps puts out so many different sets throughout the year and this one is not about the extravagant design. The boxes around the border give it just enough of a modern makeover with a nostalgic feel. I probably would have given 4 stars for now but some of the harsh reviews needed to bump this up to more than a 2 1/2 star review. They want extravagant designs go pick your favorite Topps set and as much as we love the retro designs if we want the new generation of kids to join and get off there smart phones there must be a modern influence in the design. The 84′ insert cards are sufficient enough. will Good Job Topps on the distinct makeover and keeping the silver pack promotion going. It will be a great start to the 2019 Season and the change will set the tone for the year! Support this beautiful trading card hobby cause its one of the last non digital hobbies left! My advice to Topps is drop the 2.99 price tag on a retail pack and now is the perfect time to do so with less cards per pack and make it affordable on a kids allowance. There is a lack of appreciation on most base cards in most sets and hopefully instead of throwing them out we are giving them to the kids that cant afford them! The high end cards are beautiful and appreciated by the ones that can afford them but theres enough room for everyone to enjoy. Even at .99cents a pack if the 80s craze comes back Topps will have 2 Avenues of profit. I dont think the 12 year olds are feeling Topps Opening day and Big league baseball which i think are the only 2 sets targeted for kids. A 4 year old may like a cute little mascot card but a little more effort for ALL the kids in between. Thx. for this platform to speak our mind!!!!!

Doesn’t do anything for me – how to make better CARDS in my opinion…do this: place all the people who make the decisions to make the current year card in ONE ROOM …on all the walls surrounding them have EVERY card EVER MADE in large print so they can see them – make them stay there for HOURS until they come up with a DESIGN that LOOKS acceptable. Duh.

Adam Rich

It reminds me a lot of 1982 Topps. I got into collecting in 1981 at the age of 7, so its a little nostalgic for me. I did like it when there was just one rookie card per player per set, and it was the “big card” to hopefully pull. Still remember when I was 10 or 11 and bought one pack of 1980 Topps hoping to pull the Henderson rookie – and i actually did!

I am reserving one star now until I see what they do with their League Leaders”
The last 2 years they left the multiple player format and went to an easier to compile one player card, offering 30 single players instead of 10 3-player league leaders cards. Having collected for 54years I always liked the multi-player cards and league stats on back
Hope they return to this format!!

Topps “designers” do not know the first thing about typography. Upside down names? Digitized frames? And of course we can look forward to the many poorly centered cards, courtesy of this company’s indifference to quality control. One of the worst sets in my 58 years of seeing Topps. And so many pointless inserts. Oh, and who wants to pay real money for fake “relics”? This ought to be illegal. And don’t forget all those fake sticker autographs. Once again, what’s to like here? More overproduced, overpriced garbage.

Hideous, but what did you expect? Now that I think of it, it’s worse than hideous. It’s dull, like week-old oatmeal.
Do some of us remember cards on card stock? And, no, not being pre-packaged with new players on card stock, then sold as “Heritage” so Topps can squeeze even more $$$, at outrageous prices. The modern baseball card is dead. It expired sometime in the late 80’s to early 90’s. Question: does Topps still use (human) designers? If so, they are way over paid. Frustrating, there are millions of young, bright designers out there who could bring innovation and dazzling designs to cards. Maybe, some day, Topps will be toppled by its own greed and incompetence…maybe.

Brian
Brian

Ok Topps are there going to be any 1984 World Series Champion Tigers’ autographs in the set? Like say the latest HOFer’s Allan Trammall and Jack Morris? Kirk Gibson? Lance Parrish? Lou Whitaker? Willie Hernandez? I ain’t going to hold my breath, knowing Topps’ track record!

Mark

I’m not rating it yet because it hasn’t come out, BUT I also take exception to the decreased pack sizes. Topps continues to take advantage of us collectors.
This site lists Hobby configurations only, but a little research online also shows that retail blasters will have less cards too.
I can only imagine all the different package configurations at retail will also have less cards (peg hook packs, gravity feed and hanger boxes, among others.)
Maybe they have to start factoring in to their pricing all the different packaging methods. I’m not privy to the exact information, but I have tried to figure it out by myself only, that the typical Series 1 sets of the past 3 or 4 years have had about 50 different configurations and package sizes, spread all across all retailers (Wal Mart, Target, ToysRUs, etc.) That is a LOT.
In case you are curious, turn the pack over and look for the PKG number on the back….
I will still buy it, but come on!

Out of curiosity, will Ohtani have both pitching and batting stats on one card or will he have two separate cards?

This is BS.

I just read this on another site.

“Some changes are coming with 2019 Topps baseball cards. Expect to pay a little more for a little less.

After many years of putting 36 ten-card packs into a hobby box, Topps will give collectors 14 cards in a pack but there will be only 24 packs per box. Jumbo boxes are moving from 50 cards per pack to 46. The net result is a loss of 24 cards per hobby box and 40 per Jumbo. Expect the cost to go up a little bit, too.”

So they are giving you less cards and charging you more.

This looks like a middle-of-the-road design to me. Its not going to be very memorable.

I feel like Topps needs to get back to basics and start listening to collectors. I’m not talking about mid-high end products that are expected to be flashy. I’m talking about the classic Topps set here. They need to make cards easy to interpret front and back.

I do like the stripe that runs 1/2 the card edge, similar to the 1982 set. However, the lack of a border makes these hard to grade and forced the eye to track the line rather than the entire body of the card composition.

Another “Meh” effort by Topps. I’m looking forward to when Panini can (hopefully) print logos again after the MLB license expires in 2020.

However, the standard Hobby format sees an overhaul that takes it from 36 packs at 10 cards per pack in 2018, to 24 packs at 14 cards per pack in 2019. Jumbo also has a decrease in pack size

What are the number of cards in a jumbo pack? I wonder why they are getting rid of cards in packs. Are they finally figuring out that people do not like buying their crappy cards and are making less of them. Will the price also be decreased. Oh of course not. They will decrease card and pack size but keep the price the same or raise it.

I am looking forward to these insert sets. Evolution of focuses on the many changes in the game over the years, such as equipment, logos, stadiums and uniforms. Moving past the field of play, Revolution of the Game is for the game-changing subjects who weren’t players. Tying into the sesquicentennial celebration, the 150 Years of Professional Baseball line offers 50 of the Greatest Players, 50 of the Greatest Moments, and an assortment of the Greatest Seasons during the last century and a half.

They better have babe ruth in all 3 of the Greatest insert sets. He is one of if not the greatest player of all time. He hit 60 home runs in a season. He was a member of the 1927 yankess. They have no reason not to include him in each set.

Even though I am looking forward to them now that might change when I see what they look like. If I do not like the look of them when released I will not collect them.

These are all the details we have right now. Updated info will be added when it’s available. However, the base set for Series 1 is normally 350 cards.

My favorite is the 2016 set – loved the mold-breaking borderless design. 2017 wasn’t as innovative; 2018 was a little better.

Can’t say I love the 2019 – the big white strip by the name is just kinda ugly.

IMO, take out the giant last name and keep it on the same line as the first name, and extend the pic all the way down.

Not sure of the design they look more like an insert card than a standard base card but we will have to see what they look like in person to really tell.

It was high time Topps brought back a card with borders – half border in this case. It works very well, though. I wish the white banner including the player’s last name was thinner. A fading effect occupying half the banner would look great. Players’ last names could be smaller this way.

Finally, a nice clean design that allows the viewer to focus on the player image.

I think cards need more of a distinctive border to tell the apart from other years like they did up until the 2000’s

I wish they had a full border, but I like it better than the last 3 years designs. 2017 might be the worst Topps design ever.

My initial thoughts, I like it. It will be interested to see how they use “…to indicate parallel versions.”

Not a fan.
Not a fan.

I hate it.

Let me point out the ways.

Who thought putting a light gray name on a white background was a good idea.

Speaking of names what is going on with putting the last name on top of the first name.

Then they try to squeeze the team name in the bottom right side.

Then you have the disco lights on the lower left corner.

Looks like I will not be collecting the set.

Depending on what inserts they have and what they look like I may not collect anything from this set at all.

Including next years design I am only collecting 1 design out of the last 4 years at that is this years design.

This is in my opinion will go down as one of the ugliest designs ever.

A nice departure from the previous few years where the designs were hard to distinguish at first sight.
