User Rating:

Although kids and budget collectors are not normally a focal point of the modern hobby, 2019 Topps Big League Baseball is a reminder that there are some options out there that are both fun and inexpensive.

The low-cost brand returns following a 2018 debut that was relatively well received by many collectors.

2019 Topps Big League Baseball Base

One clear change from 2018 is the base design. Instead of a simple frame, 2019 Topps Big League Baseball has a layered-photo effect with a wood background. The nameplate is also more ornate with a wavy team pennant graphic.

2019 Topps Big League Baseball Cards 2

The 400-card set offers rookie and veteran subjects, plus subsets for Award Winners, Highlights and Stat Kings. "Rare variations" were also mentioned, but no specific details were provided.

Parallels include Gold (1 per pack), Blue Border (4 per Value Box), Rainbow Foil (#/100), and Red Foil (1/1). The all-new Artist Rendition (#/50) parallel is particularly eye-catching.

2019 Topps Big League Baseball Inserts

Returning inserts include Players Weekend Nicknames and Star Caricature Reproductions / Originals.

2019 Topps Big League Baseball Cards 3

The 2019 Topps Big League Baseball checklist tosses in several new inserts to chase, as well. Ballpark Oddities turns the focus to atypical events on the field. The home run-heavy Blast Off! celebrates the longest-hit bombs of 2018. On the flip side, Wall Climbers documents the impressive grabs at or near the wall, especially those that prevent a home run.

2019 Topps Big League Baseball Cards 4

2019 Topps Big League Baseball Autographs

Signed cards remain rare in 2019 Topps Big League Baseball, but there are still some choices. The Big League Autographs line promises "MLB veterans, baseball personalities, retired greats, and more."

2019 Topps Big League Baseball Cards 5

Rookie Republic obviously features key 2019 rookies. Both autograph sets include numbered Gold Border, Black & White Image (#/25), and Red Foil (1/1) parallels.

I’ve opened two hobby boxes and two blaster boxes. I thinks it OK for kids and collectors too. It’s an affordable low end product. It’s a great step up from opening day.

This product is perfect for a low-end collector. Whether you’re an adult that likes to collect sets or buying these for your kids, this is the only product I’d recommend in the trading card world for someone who is looking for affordable and easy set collecting. I bought one hobby box and already have more than half of the “Wall Climbers” and “Blast Off” inserts, about 4-5 each of the Caricature and nickname inserts as well. I also snagged the Tatis SP card. I feel like for the first time I got a lot of bang for my buck out of a box. I may switch to this product because Topps flagship is too cumbersome, and no other Topps product is even remotely close in price to cost-effectively set collect.

Well, I am an avid card collector so I don’t fool with too many of the lower end products like these Topps Big League cards. I bought a 24-Pack retail box last year (2018) & really didn’t care much at all for the cards. Just like most have posted these cards are geared more towards kids or people just getting into the hobby.

With the added inserts for 2019 I decided to indulge a little more for 2019 on these cards. What I did was a trial/experiment comparison of the Blaster, Retail (24-Pack), & Hobby Boxes. I bought 3 Blaster Boxes, 2 Retail Boxes, & 3 Hobby Boxes.

Now, I can only post what I found out by my own opening of these boxes. Of the 3 Blaster Boxes opened I pulled a SP RC in which there are only 3 cards (Fernando Tatis Jr., Pete Alonso, & Eloy Jiminez) out of each box (1 per box). I pulled 2 Gold Pete Alonso RC’s (2 different boxes) & the 3rd Blaster Box I pulled a Rainbow Foil RC /100 of Fernando Tatis Jr.

The 2 Hobby Boxes in total I only pulled 1 of these SP RC’s & it was a base of Pete Alonso. In the 3 Hobby Boxes I pulled 2 SP RC’s in total (Gold of Eloy Jiminez & base of Fernando Tatis Jr.).

It seems the Blaster Boxes are the ones packed with the 3 SP RC cards more than the 24-Pack retail or Hobby Boxes. I never thought from the 3 Blaster Boxes that I would get over 1 of these SP RC’s & to be honest I didn’t expect to pull any.

Most definitely though the hobby boxes had the most inserts. The Retail 24-Pack boxes wasn’t too far behind though in the number of inserts averaged per box.

Of the 8 boxes in total bought I pulled 2 Autos. They were a base Kyle Freeland (24-Pack Retail Box) & a Gold /99 Rookie Republic of Ryan O’Hearn (Hobby). I also pulled 1 BallPark Oddities of Francisco Arcia from one of the Hobby Boxes. This insert runs 1:435 Packs.

Overall, pretty pleased with my 8 box purchase but I’m still missing a select few cards to make 1 complete base set which is 400 cards. That shouldn’t happen when you buy a total of 1,362 cards. the complete set is just over 1/4 the amount of the cards I received. Needless to say I have many many duplicates.

Another thing I noticed is the Retail Boxes (2) had more RC’s in total than the 3 Hobby Boxes. I don’t mind duplicates of RC’s myself & even a few of the star/superstar vets but to have 5-10 cards of the same common player is a bit aggravating. I only pulled 2 Mike Trout base cards in total from these 8 boxes but pulled 10 of Billy Hamilton for example.

Mystery Redemption “A” is Vladimir Guerrero Jr and Mystery Redemption “B” is Eloy Jimenez

Redemption A is already noted on the checklist as Vlad Jr. To our knowledge, there is no Redemption B for this set. Also, Eloy has live rookie autographs in Big League.

Solid set for the price point. I wish they’d just make this their Opening Day product. I don’t buy base Topps knowing Chrome is on its way, so Opening Day feels even more ridiculous to me. Move all the mascots, stadium food, etc. into Big League and give the kids a single set with a unique design to remember decades from now.

Much like last years issue that had the first pack issued Acuna and Torres rookie cars this years product has the first pack issued cards for Alonso, Tatis ,and Jimenez which also happen to be short prints. The only thing keeping me from buying this years product is the design which extremely cluttered and busy compared to last seasons simple yet classy design. Then again this is a product geared towards kids so cluttered and busy is marketed towards them.

This reply is to Nicolas Guerrero. Actually, 2019 Topps Series 1 has some very first rookie cards for some players. Not that many but they do have them so this wouldn’t be the 1st set to do that in 2019. Thanks.

This product was ALLLMOST perfect if it didn’t leave out Peter Alonso autos. Already pre-ordered my box. I got this based on the fact that I don’t spend a lot on hobby boxes and the price for this set is awesome. Also, and correct me if I’m wrong, I think this is the first 2019 product featuring the first rookie cards of this year’s 1st year players.

As soon as we have the checklist, we post it. Not much can be done when there is no checklist to post.

Can’t wait for this. My favorite product from 2018. Putting the emphasis on the cards and not just the autographs and relics is a great way to go. Wish there were alot more products that did that.

This is the ONLY set that any card company makes that has the multiple “League Leader” cards on it!!!
As a collector for 54 years and a multiple player on card collector, I love this aspect of the product!

Count me among the veteran collectors who loved this product last year. The market is flooded with high end sets, and while Opening Day is a nice low end product, it’s a bummer that it basically just repackages flagship without the hits. BL has a great niche.

My only gripe with BL is the large checklist. While nothing compared to the Topps sets from my childhood, a 400 card base set is awfully big for 2019. If they cut 50 or 100 cards from this set it would be amazing.

I love this product! I haven’t been into the hobby very long (although I’ve been a Baseball fan for years) but I recently got a hanger pack of the 2018 BL and loved it. They put a high amount of stars (Judge, Betts, Atuve ) so I think this is great for kids to get cards of their favorite stars plus they have cards for some of the old timers too ( I pulled Koufax for example) which can be a great conversation starter with the kids. The design is flawless plus a great feel to them makes the product truly awesome. I recommend these for kids of all ages and I personally really enjoyed them!

Last year, Topps Big League was my favorite set and I’ve been collecting for 45+ years. Retail boxes were in the $35/box range and were a TON of fun to open. The above comments like “middle of the road” and “terrible product” are completely asinine. Not every set has to be 3 cards per pack, one pack per box and the boxes sell for a couple of hundred dollars. The hobby has changed for the worst in some cases and for the better in others. I appreciate a set like this as it’s allows me to still collect without it becoming a financial burden.

I liked last years product it was ultra affordable as its aimed at kid collectors. I thought the design was also very clean. This issue looks very busy design wise but again this is a product aimed at kids.
