2019-20 Upper Deck Series 1 Hockey Cards

I know man. I am not asking you to give me a precise answer, since nobody knows for sure. I am asking you as a collector and a person who has a vast experience in the field. You, personally, do you think that could be the case?

So I check a bit to see if I can find out about how many Young Guns Clear Cut Exclusives there are. I know this is not perfect math, but still it gives an idea.

First of all, it is more than obvious that there are much less YG Clear Cut Exclusives than YG Exclusives. The question to which I tried to give an answer is this: are there more or less YG Clear Cut Exclusives than YG High Gloss.

In the last 3 months on eBay there are/were sold, completed, or still online, roughly 3 times more YG High Gloss than YG Clear Cut Exclusives. I’d say it is pretty safe to assume that there were produced less than 10 copies of YG Clear Cut Exclusives per player. If I were to give a personal opinion I don’t think there are more than 5 copies per player. What do you think?

Bought a retail box on sale, figuring if nothing else I would get a near set. WRONG. The collation is terrible – 36 duplicates – plus short one portraits and the rookies are horrible. None of the better ones. I don’t know if the hobby is better but this is a waste of money, even at a reduced price.

My brother pulled a Henrik Lundqvist photo variation. It’s a landscape style card.

Bought about 9-10 boxes this year and haven’t made my money back on one yet. You used to be able to pull the big guys consistently and that made it fun and worth it. Now Upperdecks so cheap they just cram it with a bunch of garbage. Will not being anymore boxes for a long time.

I’m taking off from boxes, tins or packs from UD for awhile. Will buy individual cards on ebay or comc. 2 young guns per tin? Now we’re up to $15.00 per yg. 49 in a set, maybe 6 to 8 have any appeal. Does anybody know when their contract runs out? Greed is totally different than profit motive.

Tough to understand the Upper Deck people, listen I’m 86 years old and I meet and speak to many Hockey card collectors. 100% feel the same as I do, the product quality and photos are perfect. Why then
year after year they keep increasing the number of subsets and the distribution is very bad. I, for one, have bought close to 3 Hobby cases and have yet to hit a Fananimation, Day with the cup, Ceremonial puck drop, Cup components,
rookie tribute etc !!!!

This box suffers from very poor centering on player names. I’m 6 packs in, and half the cards have the bottom line running through the name.

Just finished the first case and won’t buy another. Fell short on a complete Young Guns set (missing Jack Hughes and three others).

Printing on base cards was horrendous, names ran over with card design on about a third of the case.

Quality Control needed bad. Foil is all over the place. Just opened my boxes from Xmas. Foil is off up and down and left and right. Cutting off names and not around the position spot. Not going to be any 10s graded just due to this.

I found a Jonathan Toews variant. Either a White (Jersey) Horizontal, or a Red (Jersey) Vertical

Print runs are up, what could possibly go wrong? Bicycle spokes, folks. Years from now, pick up the Jack Hughes, Pavel Bure, and Sergei Federov Young Guns, 3 for a dollar at your local flea market.

As was already mentioned, UD did retail dirty this year. And of course the retailers never lowered prices for less cards. C$50 tins at WM Canada. C$40 at TRU. WM has 94/95 die-cut pack box for C$55. Team Triples boxes are at TRU for C$37 with 74 total cards.

As for the actual cards they are nicely designed this year. I even like the YG look.

Collation was good in 3 Team Triples boxes bought in one purchase at one store. Around 43 cards/50 card chunks after sorting with a handful of doubles across those 50 card chunks.

I purchased two blaster boxes. Out of 56 cards 40 were exact duplicates in order from the top down in each pack. I received 2 canvas, 4 young guns, and 2 portraits. So in all, I received 8 unique cards. I haven’t bought a blaster in years. I remember why. Never again.

The very best product so far this year is UD series one. Not surprising, the Young Guns
are the only reason. On the negative side, way too many inserts, some impossible
to find and naturally 10% increase year after year.

So how many clear cut exclusives cards are there per card?

Also why would you make a clear cut exclusives young gun that seems out of hand.

If anything you should be making 1of 1 young guns years ago.

How sad, I used to love series one and two. First the hobby boxes went to about 100 each and blasters now have only one Young Gun. I stopped completely breaking any UD products and now just buy the key cards on the secondary market. The QC is horrible and coalition is extremely watered down.

Again with the QC issues… Geez UD, what’s going on?

Not impressed! Retail blasters and tins are getting a huge blow in terms of young guns. Instead of three young guns per tin, there will only be two per tin. For blasters, instead of two young guns per blaster, it is just only one per blaster. Hobby seems great, but retail will be hot garbage this year and for that reason, this product barely gets a two star rating.

Pulled a Elias Pettersson variation base card #168. He is wearing his blue jersey.

Got a base Draisaitl variation with white jersey.

Got an acetate “clear cut” exclusive that is not numbered out of 100, cant find info anywhere.

I like this product a lot this year. Everything looks good except the young guns. Seem bland.

The product is ok. Three stars because there are a lot of misprint base cards. Putting the player’s name between two silver lines was not a brilliant idea. For many, many base cards the name is cut by one of the two silver lines and it’s not well centred. Also, after the McDavid rush, when UD printed and printed so many Series 1 and 2, I’m under the impression that they kept the same pattern. Perhaps they didn’t print as many cards as they did during McDavid’s rookie year, but they certainly print more than before. If before McDavid I used to get 2-3 high glosses and 8-9 exclusives, now I generally get 0-1 high glosses and 4-5 exclusives for exactly the same number of cases. This happened every year in the last 4 years, so I don’t think it’s a coincidence. Is it because they spread the high glosses and the exclusives throughout physical release and ePacks? I don’t know. This also could be a possible answer. Trey, any idea if the print runs for Series 1 and 2 have increased after 2015-16 season?

Purchased 1 box and overall I was satisfied. The look is great and the inserts are nice. Even the Portraits look good. Lucky to get the Kaapo Kakko UD Canvas Young Guns and the regular Quinn Hughes Young Guns.

F-9 Fanimation Chris Kreiber New York Rangers

Good crop of Rookies with the Hughes boys, Olofsson and the Canvas Young Guns of rookies who will be in Series 2 like Kakko. Pulled a Poehling Clear Cut and Makar Canvas Young Guns from the same box. Nice bang for your buck. One thing I pulled I don’t see is a Andrei Svechnikov Photo Variation (white jersey-photo is vertical instead of horizontal) of his base card # 53. I assume there will be other players. Any idea on the odds ? Also pulled a 30th Anniversary Randy Robitaille stamped 1/1. Both will be on ebay in my store.

Not many hockey players in this product. Where’s Wayne? Whole pile of Europeans nobody cares about.

No true Young Guns for Kakko, Makar, Brannstrom, Gusev, Suzuki, Zadina in S1?! They’ve really diluted down the rookies in this product to push S2 later in the season. Very disappointing checklist.

Is upper deck going to have any compendium sets this year?

The best product put out by upper deck , but are the opc glossy rookies in tins this year? In past the winter classic & base over size has been in tins and OPC 3 pak rookies in a 12 pak box ? .thers getn to be so many different size boxs ,tin & paks that we are gona end up with nuthn but paper to burn I thot when Panini quit hockey upper deck said they wud have better control on amount of cards bein released ,?

Looking forward to the release. I preordered the hobby box and I was wondering if you can get high gloss and exclusives and midnight and acetate in a Series 1 hobby box.

Victor Olofsson looks good too. He’s playing on Buffalo’s top line with Eichel! He could be a Calder candidate.
Also, Trent Frederic in Boston. Blueger in Pittsburgh, Max Jones in Anaheim, Balcers and Brannstrom in Ottawa, Fabbro in Nashville, and Hirose in Detroit! He will actually start more games than Zadina will this year most likely. Most of those guys will be in the Series 1 Set I’m guessing.
There are a lot of talented rookies entering the league this year.

Yeah that kid Gusev from NJD. He looks good so far.

I’m really pumped about this 2019-20 Young guns crop. A few elite guys (J. Hughes, K. Kakko, C. Makar) as well as many solid rookies (Q. Hughes, Poehling, Suzuki, Texier, Zadina, Dobson, Brannstrom and so on…)

used to be that collectors turned their noses at products like ProSet or early versions of UD hockey because they just made sooo much of it..
this is the same crap as that
just not collectable at all
if you spend $80 for a box of this then you might as well also go and buy up all those Proset cards from that old guy at the card show who has been bringing the same cards since he was in highschool.. because comparitively this is exactly as overproduced as that crap was back then.

Dach may play a few games but doubtful. Cody Glass could be another player to get some games at the start of the season.

I think you are missing Kirby Dach. But I think he may be playing another year for the Saskatoon Blades.

Assuming Kaapo is in series 2, it looks like the best series 1 YGs will be Jack and Quinn Hughes, Makar, Poehling, Zadina and Fabbro – maybe Byram if he plays this year. Am I missing anyone?

As always this will be ud top product an it wud be really nice if they wud start to put sum value in the retail product they cost is about 50% of a hobby box but yu don’t get 50% of the value they need to very badly look at that

Inserts look pretty good. I’m not a fan of the Young Guns cards this year. They look fairly plain compares to the past few years.
