Branching off from the main Star Wars storyline, 2018 Topps Star Wars Solo goes back to the early days for the smuggler Han Solo via Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Starring Alden Ehrenreich as Han, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, Woody Harrelson as Beckett, and Emilia Clarke as Kira, the film translates well to cardboard. Collectors can look forward to two hits per hobby box, with at least one being an autograph or sketch card.
2018 Topps Star Wars Solo Base / Inserts
Providing a snapshot of the May 2018 film, the 100-card base set covers key characters, moments and artwork. Overall, parallels are quite common and include Yellow (one per pack), Black (1:2 packs), Silver (1:4 packs), Pink (#/99), Orange (#/25), and one-of-one Printing Plate options, of which there are four for each card. There are also hobby-only Gold (#/10) and Imperial Red (1/1) parallels.
The 2018 Topps Star Wars Solo inserts combine to average one per pack, and consist of Character Stickers, Icons, Silhouettes, Ships and Vehicles, and Smooth Sayings.
2018 Topps Star Wars Solo Autographs / Sketch / Patch
Like Rogue One before it, 2018 Topps Star Wars Solo promises the normal array of premium inserts. Guaranteed one sketch or autograph per hobby box, the hand-drawn Sketch cards and cast Autographs should both see considerable attention. The signed cards also have Pink (#/99), Orange (#/25), Gold (#/10 - Hobby), Imperial Red (1/1 - Hobby), and Printing Plate (1/1) chases.
Even more of a chase, the Dual Autograph cards combine two signers for the base and hobby-only Gold (#/10) and Imperial Red (1/1) parallels. Pushing that another level, Triple Autograph cards go for the trifecta, adding a one-of-one Imperial Red.
The last hit insert is the themed Manufactured Patch set with Pink (#/99), Orange (#/25), Gold (#/10 - Hobby), Imperial Red (1/1 - Hobby) versions.

2018 Topps Star Wars Solo Movie Product Review

Good: New base design; fun inserts; fresh feel compared to past Star Wars sets.
Bad: Very weak autograph checklist; tough to find box value.
The Bottom Line: While other Topps Star Wars releases tend to feel the same, year after year, the 2018 Topps Star Wars Solo Movie designs are a nice change. However, given the sparse autograph checklist, and nothing of note offered in its place, decent value is very difficult to achieve opening boxes.
Card Design: 4.0/5.0
A speeding Millennium Falcon and thick clouds give the 2018 Topps Star Wars Solo base set a makeshift frame and a fairly unique look. I like the direct connection to the film even if it is a little distracting. Parallels just change the cloud color fill. These are a bit bland in my opinion and I'm not a fan of the brighter colors as it clashes with the main design scheme.
I really enjoyed the inserts in the set as a whole. I realize that they might not appeal to all tastes, but they make me think of something you would see on a poster or t-shirt. I like the retro and modern combo common throughout. The looks do seem a little overlapping, but I think it ties the release together well.
The autograph designs are a little more generic but I like that they contrast with the base design. This is another instance where the parallel colors don't work as well with the main color scheme.
As far as manufactured patch cards go, this one is fine. I still don't understand the point and it comes across poorly as a box hit. The design is okay but the Han Solo patch in the review box looks a little silly to me.
Checklist: 1.5/5.0
There is no nice way to say that the 2018 Topps Star Wars Solo autograph checklist is bad. For signature fans, you have Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca (twice) and very little else.
I get that the top stars are not easy to lock down and sometimes they just don't work out. Still, to miss out on every big name from the film and not reveal that until release day clearly ruffled a few feathers in the hobby. This was an even bigger issue since it does not seem that Topps made an effort to offset this clear weakness with something extra like a bonus hit or some special content addition.
Of course, you can make the argument that autographs aren't the only aspect of the set. And that's true. But these sets are based around hits now, and the autograph checklist is the headliner in nearly every other release.
Value: 2.0/5.0
Value dipped once news broke about the checklist and boxes sit in the $50-70 range at the time of this review. That is still too much for a low-value autograph and manufactured relic as the two likely box hits. From the collecting side, there was a lot here to enjoy, but monetary value is rough. These might see close-out pricing at some point.
The Fun Factor: 3.75/5.0
I am a little torn because I still enjoyed most of the cards in the box and liked the designs. The primary negatives in the review box were the hits. The relic has already been discussed, and the other hit was a sketch. These have odds of 1:225 packs, so not an easy pull. However, this might be the most underwhelming sketch I have ever gotten from a box. That didn't ruin the experience, but it did take the fun down a level.

If there was a 0 star option I would have selected it. What a horrible and non productive attempt at a trading card… Topps should’ve vetoed this hideous, boring and generic product. The only positive to this set is the photo quality. The photos come through very clear and the exposure and light adjustments are well done and fine tuned to perfection… Sorry to be such a downer. I like to view myself as an optimistic person and try to see the good in things. This product is probably the biggest waste of money for me so far this year. I wish I would be bought a blaster pack of Chrome or something like that. Hell I wouldve been 100x as happy with Batman or Attack on Titan cards. I mean what do I do with these cards now? Can anyone help me see some positive in this set?
