Product Details
Going back to the very beginning, 2018 Topps Star Wars A New Hope Black and White uses full-bleed photography to great effect. Each box of the hobby-only set includes one autograph or hand-drawn sketch card.
Known simply as Star Wars when it released in 1977, the initial film in the mega-franchise is now called Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. The black-and-white images take us to the early days, well before the classic franchise became the blockbuster brand it is today.
Topps Star Wars A New Hope Black and White Base / Inserts
Featuring 140 cards utilizing black-and-white photography from the film, the minimalist base design lets the iconic scenes do the talking. Mixing things up, parallels add a color tint to the entire card. The choices include Sepia (1:2 packs), Blue Hue Shift (1:4 packs), Green Hue Shift (#/99), Purple Hue Shift (#/25), Red Hue Shift (#/10), and Metal (1/1).
There are also four chase inserts in the 2018 Topps Star Wars: A New Hope Black and White checklist that combine to average one per pack. Behind the Scenes gets away from the standard movie shots for a little background on the process, and Concept Art goes back to the drawing board. In addition, Iconic Characters highlights key names from Episode IV, while Poster cards naturally showcase the various film posters.
Topps Star Wars A New Hope Black and White Autographs / Sketch
Providing just two main hit options, with one guaranteed per box, 2018 Topps Star Wars: A New Hope Black and White offers autographs and sketch cards. The main Autograph set features base versions, plus Blue (#/99), Green (#/25), Purple (#/10) and Red (1/1) Hue Shift parallels. Much more limited are the Dual Autograph and Triple Autograph cards. And the rarest of the bunch is the one-of-one 6-Person Autograph card featuring six true legends from Star Wars.

Review
2018 Topps Star Wars A New Hope Black and White Review
Reviewed by Trey Treutel
Good: Crisp black-and-white photos; nice take on a well-known film; Color SP autographs add impressive element.
Bad: Sticker autographs not ideal; price might be a little high for one sketch or autograph per hobby box.
The Bottom Line: While Topps does have a tendency to overdo the retro-inspired sets, 2018 Topps Star Wars A New Hope Black and White brings a fresh feel to an old classic. It is hard not to recommend this set to fans of the original film.
Card Design: 4.0/5.0
There really is no design for the main 2018 Topps Star Wars A New Hope Black and White cards. The full-bleed, black-and-white images are adorned with a small Star Wars logo and nothing more. This is clearly a case where "less is more" works quite well. While everything is not completely done in black and white, the parallels add subtle changes that succeed in mixing up the (lack of) color to a small extent, but without killing the vibe of the set.
The inserts offer some design aspects but mostly just enough to make it clear what's not a base card. None are truly memorable but serve their purpose solidly.
Because the autographs feature stickers, the simplicity of the base design is lost somewhat to make room for a box to house the signature. This is the main design negative for me as I can't help but think how amazing on-card silver or gold autographs would look on the primary design. Even with the stickers, the short-printed color autograph cards are very striking.
Checklist: 4.0/5.0
With 140 cards, the base set provides a decent summary of the film. However, because the boxes deliver only 56 cards, collectors will need multiple boxes to complete the set. It would be nice if the full set could be built in one box, but it will take three or more, and that can get expensive.
When it comes to the signers, 2018 Topps Star Wars A New Hope Black and White has nearly everyone of note, at least among those still available to sign. Darth Vader appears to be the biggest omission, and a David Prowse / James Earl Jones dual autograph would have been amazing. Of course, we have no idea of the rarity of Carrie Fisher or Harrison Ford, but on paper, the original Star Wars stars are nearly all here.
Value: 3.75/5.0
I go back and forth on value. While prices have come down since release, boxes still sell in the $55-70 range. Remember that you are getting 55 base/insert/parallel cards and one autograph or sketch for that amount. This is an instance where I prefer more base cards in a box for that price, especially since most of the monetary value rides on one card.
The Fun Factor: 4.5/5.0
Topps understands the market for nostalgia better than most and this set taps into that feeling with gusto. To be honest, there is not much "newness" here, but it certainly doesn't feel stale despite being based on a movie from 1977. The set is both simple and refined, with a lot to offer fans of the Jedi. My personal fun with this box was also helped by the sweet C-3PO sketch from David Day.
I hope they continue the black-and-white format for the other films from the original trilogy.

I opened a box the other day and what looked to be green color cards without a number stamp… I love the black and white series cards.

Likely the Blue parallel.
