This is the first time I’ve gotten my hands on any Mega Box from the Topps Chrome series. Just bought a few last night to give other collectors a chance to grab some, so there were several left. Just got a Torres, Soto and Ohtani rookie from two boxes I purchased last week. Going again to purchase a couple of more boxes later today in the afternoon at the same store I went to last night if no one pulled the trigger on them. Very fun product to rip open and go through!

Expensive and the secondary market prefers the regular update cards over the Chrome version.

As much as I’ve complained about this product, and was adamant that I would not buy it, I did a complete 180. Over the weekend, I cracked open 42 Value Packs. I did not get one refractor. So, the reason I changed my grade is because I like the simplicity of this series. There’s no Inserts (except for the International Affair Cards) or Short Prints, just the numbered parallels. Well, if anybody needs to complete their sets, I’ve got a ton of these cards. Overall, I’ve probably spent $600 now on this product. I feel like a complete idiot. In my opinion the only TRUE Rookie Card in this set is the Soto cards. At least I’ve got about ten of those, with a few of the pink ones, but why do they call this a VALUE PACK, when they put 4 packs of cards in there to get 14 cards? Wouldn’t it be cheaper for Topps to just put 12 cards in one pack and the two pink cards in another? With hits so rare, I found myself incredibly annoyed when ripping open a pack of 4 cards, when I can already see the bottom and top cards.

Robert
Robert

What’s the deal with people selling individual packs on ebay? I know with the Bowman mega boxes only 2 out of the 7 packs contained chrome cards. Is there anyway to know which packs contain autographs in the topps chrome mega boxes?

Matt
Matt

I like this product for what it is and only at retail price one box at a time. I feel like that the odds this year are much worse than last year but then again I might have just gotten lucky last year. So far 4 boxes opened and only a single refractor out of them. Honestly having only one insert set hurts this product as much as the odds do especially since the insert set is relatively boring.

Steve

Excellent looking cards but the price of same and then the mark up via eBay and Amazon.
Takes the fun out of collecting for kids who without their parents couldn’t afford same.
Remember the day 5 to 10 cents a pack.
I do and they were the best days of my life!!

So I went to Target and bought only 1 box. Here’s why. Why does this set have on-card Auto’s for only 4 players. I only know this because I got one, a Minaya Blue Wave on Card auto. I was stoked. Then I did some research. The other 3 players are Travis Taijeron, (???)Kyle Martin, (???)and Tyler Danish. Wow, Minaya is the Babe Ruth of this class. Taijeron and Martin didn’t even play this season and Danish appeared in 7 games pitching 6.1 Inn during a short summer call-up. How are these players remotely in this set. And why are they the only on-card autos? How does one end up in a “Traded” set, w/o even playing? OMG, Kyle Martin was actually released on July 25th. I look forward to your response.

Corey
Corey

Well I guess I need to correct myself from my Nov. 7th post. Last night I went into Target and found 18 boxes. After researching this set, I decided not to buy any. I do NOT like sticker autos. Last year I pulled an Alex Reyes Red Auto, but its a sticker. How can Topps Print on the cards that the autographs are in front of a Topps Representative? When we know that players are sent sheets of stickers to sign. Sticker autos are crappy for the entire industry. They create an entire market based on something that is NOT real. As crazy as this might sound, but a facsimile of an Auto looks beter on a card than a sticker auto. In the entire Autograph industry, I can’t think of any products that would provide stickers on sports/entertainment paraphanlea. Can you imagine someone selling an Eddie Van Halen signed guitar with a STICKER? Just like the 80’s, when the market was flooded and all my cards lost their value. These sticker autos are creating a false market. For that reason, I passed on the 18 boxes, as I already see the market dwindling. Sorry so long, but what is the point of having Topps Update, just to be followed by Topps Chrome Update? I personally love Topps Heritage Stock, and this entire Chromium premium is a waste of money.

Hey Trey, why is there no mention of the pink parallel cards or odds of getting one or ratio of how many per packs or anyting? The product details usually cover things like this but on this specific set of cards there is absolutely nothing about the pink parallels. Do you have any info at all? Would appreciate an answer of some kind.

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

Pink parallels are actually noted in both the profile section and the parallel section of the checklist. They are exclusive to Value packs in their own separate pack.

Just by chance I had to run to the next town over 25 miles away and passed a Target so I stopped by and I hit the jackpot with 7 boxes and I swooped ’em up. Better yet they were only $17.99 ea on sale!! Finally I got lucky!

Doug The Collector
Doug The Collector

My Target just re-loaded. Boxes are on sale for $17.99. Value packs are on sale for $8.99. I bought 2 of each and there is/was plenty left for others. I thought about buying it all but I did not want to screw over my fellow collectors just to make a few bucks.

I find it interesting that the International Affair cards are not labeled with the ‘Topps Chrome’ logo. Maybe I’m the only one. Seems odd.

corey

I wish I could actually grade this product, but unfortunately I can only travel to 4 Targets to find nothing. Yet I see people on Ebay selling 55, 50, 45 Box Lots marked up like crazy. This is a MAJOR problem. I actually asked one of the Sellers how he got so many and he said “I have 10 Targets within 30 miles of my house and have a flexible schedule. Phone is a powerful tool.” Thats total BS. I went into total CSI Dork Mode, and found maybe 2 Targets near where this guy lives. There is a flaw in the distribution channels. Now I’m not saying this is like The Lufthansa Heist, but it is becoming a yearly thing. In my opinion, we need someone like Trey to step up and make Topps aware of this. Its just not cool.

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

I certainly understand the frustration with a system that is not transparent and can be abused. The reality is that retail distribution is more problematic because Topps has virtually no control once the distribution outfit has the cards. This is not new information for Topps as people complain after nearly every set release. Normally, patience wins out as eBay box prices drop or more boxes show up in stores unless the supply is very limited.

Cody

Wow is all I can say… I’ve spent probly close to over $3000 on topps Chrome product and the lowest I’ve pulled is a base refractor /50. I spend $17 on a retail product and pull a /5 red wave on card Auto. Only thin I don’t like how it says base set is 100 cards, but there are multiples of same players all-star and team logo is how I set then apart but some players have more image variations. Is one style of the card considered to be true base card for set collectors? Thanks

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

It’s 100 cards in the base set because it is HMT1 to HMT100.

JDonovan
JDonovan

Decent product, but does there really need to be 4 different Gleyber Torres cards in a 100 card base set? The fact that 4 teams do not have a single card makes it even more egregious. I’ll pass on this one.

james stram

This is a great set, I love it. The only thing I’m not crazy about his all the sticker autos. Are there any on card Autos in this set Trey? Please reply whenever you have time. I heard that 90% of the Autos are stickers, is this true or is there actually 10% of on card autos?

Found two boxes here. Second box was a dud, but first box had a printing plate and an autograph. Btw, the auto I got was numbered HMT-29 and was an x-fractor /125

I visited my local Target for the last 4 days straight, and they were finally stocked today. I hate to say it but I left nothing for the next person seeking them…Beautiful product!

Mo P
Mo P

My only beef, is that I visit 10+ Targets in my area, and I’ll be lucky if 2 have them stocked, and many never do, or someone else is traveling to all the Targets like myself and snatching them up before I can.
