User Rating:

Given UD's obvious love of acetate, the 2018-19 Upper Deck Clear Cut Hockey debut should not be all that surprising. The autograph-only release honors current and past UD designs.

Each Hobby box of the all-new NHL card product includes one autograph that is hard-signed and issued in a sealed one-touch case.

2018-19 Upper Deck Clear Cut Hockey Autographs

Using the flagship '18-19 design for select Series 1 and Series 2 players, the 2018-19 Upper Deck Clear Cut Hockey checklist features on-card Clear Cut Autographs (1:10) and Clear Cut Rookie Autographs (1:3) in a variety of parallels. For rookies, the Exclusives parallel is numbered to 65 while the non-rookie players are limited to 35 copies. Both sets also have High Gloss (#/10) and One-of-One parallels.

2018-19 Upper Deck Clear Cut Hockey Cards 2

Numbered to 99, the Embedded Endorsements cards are another hard-signed choice in 2018-19 Upper Deck Clear Cut Hockey, adding Gold (#/25) and Orange (#/3) parallels. Flagship fans will also recognize the UD Canvas Signatures cards, which are serial numbered.

2018-19 Upper Deck Clear Cut Hockey Cards 3

Showing respect to past sets, the Clear Cut Rookie Tribute Autograph (1:16) cards take collectors on a trip to visit various Hobby legends at their start. This includes Young Guns and SP Authentic Future Watch versions.

2018-19 Upper Deck Clear Cut Hockey Cards 4

Another nostalgic set comes in the Clear Cut Hockey Heroes Tribute Autograph (1:32) and Clear Cut Hockey Heroes Header Tribute Autograph (1:400) insert line. These cards highlight NHL legends.

I love these acetate products, cards look great, I’m not a big fan of the embedded endorsements, but the rest of the cards are gorgeous. I love the fact they add a bonus card to all redemptions, so you have a card in hand when opening the product. if you look at prices of similar products, there is a lot of low priced cards for cost of the box.

also you missed Brett Hull in the hockey heroes headers

Greg
Greg

Another product that is made for case breaks. Identify a couple teams and take a couple 15 box case swings instead of buying a box or two. There’s some great stuff in here but a ton of junk. Give me more chances at higher end stuff than buying 1-2 boxes and getting $10-20 back. The one break I was in pulled a Gretzky out of 10 and hockey hero Gretzky as well.

Trey, I just wanted to point out three things:

First, I love that you publish both the “pro” and “con” commenters. My issue with the product – beyond the fact a Carter Hart is Group G 1:5 odds – is always the price. Informed collectors will simply target their preferred card with 100% certainty on eBay. As valuable and rare as a McD (multi) case hit might be, UD will be churning out non-RC McD autos across brands in perpetuity for his entire lifespan, i.e. another 50yrs. My preference would be to buy a RC auto of his, at my price point, on the secondary market. Alternatively, I would prefer to liquidate my $100 (or $300 for three boxes) of “pocket change” at Belmont Park, and strut around with a fly hat on.

Second, the hype and wait for the product has been just mmmind-numbing. They released the product at the beginning of the subsequent hockey season, as if to seize upon peak emotion. The price has risen significantly from pre-sale to sale, prior to a single case being cracked. It does nothing to diminish the prefab paranoia around retailers creating multipliers misaligned known odds. If only UD would include a second card in the product, at minimum guaranteeing an actual clear cut in every box, i.e. afford a consolation vet or legend auto, even if mass produced. Paying $100 to solely receive a middling cardboard Embedded is a bit bold, as they are essentially 15/16 Champ’s cards redux.

And third, I really don’t blame ppl for not getting the groupings. Based on the checklist, CC-WG Wayne Gretzky is Group B 1:227 (0.44%, less likely), while CC-BB Brent Burns is Group A 1:196 (0.51%, more likely). But to hit the specific Gretz (not Orr), we would have to divide by three Group B cards on the checklist (0.15%, more likely). And to hit the Burnsy, we would divide by five Group A cards (0.10%, less likely). I mean, say whaaaat? Often, it is just easier to part with your money and not hemorrhage your brain. Yet, ppl do need to remain vigilant. Saying to yourself, “You never know? I might get lucky” is the surest way to throw $100 out the window with 99.56% certainty.

It’s interesting. From what I have seen of breaks of this, the 1 big hit in each case has been either the first card opened or the last. Anyone else experience something similar? I wonder if they are all positioned in the same spot in the case. But it comes out first or last depending which way the box is oriented.

First time Habitual complainer

I agree the product is pure fire starter unless you pull a McDavid. Some of the cards are good but it’s way to watered down with plugs and bad rookies. 12/15 boxes are collectable the rest will be eBay firesales at less than 20% of the boxes overpriced value.

Milin
Milin

1 in 16 cases.

The product has been pulling out FIRE.

Now the McDavid is rare!

NOT a Habitual Complainer
NOT a Habitual Complainer

This is how you know that people make comments and have no clue about what they are talking about..
the comment above
“McDavid YG Clear Cut Autos are one in TWO cases”

you CLEARLY dont understand how UD odds work
its by the group..
so 1:69 packs is to get any one card from group C – not just CM..
so since there are 7 players in Group C odds 1:69 – that means the odds of getting any one from Group C is 1:69…
so the odds to get a CM YG is not one in TWO cases like you said ..
its 1 in 483 packs .. thats 1 in 16 cases.

I have now seen 5 cases broken personally and another 12 online..
total overpriced.. total Garbage.

Trey Treutel
Trey Treutel

There are certainly nicer ways to point this out, but, yes, the UD odds are always group odds, which is noted in every single section where they are displayed. As was mentioned by NOT a Habitual Complainer, you have to multiply the total number of cards in the group times the group odds to get the overall odds for one specific player.

Milin

An amazing product.

Honestly not sure how anyone can hate on this product.. then again – if you look at any comment page for any product.. all it is, is habitual complainers!

This is the first time in a long time, that I was able to get FULL value back for FOUR! of my cases.

I was shocked.

The resale value on this stuff has been through the roof!

McDavid YG Clear Cut Autos are one in TWO cases.. unbelievable product.

Imagine complaining about too many McDavid Autos?!

At less than the cost of series 1 and 2 (where you can get $5 worth of cards).. here, I was able to sell a bryan sleney card for $18 on eBay.. and a McDavid Clear cut for $3400!

Stefan
Stefan

What a garbage product. I was hoping it would be as good as the 13-14 buybacks. I waited for this for a long time and boy was it disappointing. Spend $110 on a box to get a variety of plugs. 0 stars for me go watch some case breaks and see that maybe 1-2 cards are good out of 15 boxes. UD should be ashamed for releasing such a S!#T product. I’d avoid buying any boxes go buy the cards you want on eBay and save yourself some $$$$.

Minus stars for this
Minus stars for this

how can the three full cases I saw broken in person – 90 packs
have 41 cards that are 1:5 odds on this list
including 5 Chistopher Ehn , 4 Spencer Foo, 4 Dennis Choloski and 3 Kiefer Sherwood

according to odds it should have been closed to 18 ‘1:5’ cards
There were another 19 cards that were 1:11 odds including lots of dupes.

Clearly( not meant as a pun) – UD has overproduced the lower crap cards on this to extend the print run…
and based on the online breaks I watched.. its obvious that somehow UD gives breakers much better cases than they send elsewhere.
Its very sad that UD has to ‘steal’ from their most loyal clients that existed way before Breakers came along.
Disgraceful.

I opened 3 inners (45 boxes) here’s what I got:
19 cc rookies – including not 1, not 2 but 3 cooper marodys! But did get pettersson.
2 cc non rookies – one was group A
5 canvas – some reg some red parallel
1 HH tribute
1 rookie tribute
6 exclusive parallels – all scrubs
1 hg parallel – not a player anyone would want
10 EEs (including some gold parallels but no orange)
Learn from my mistake and stay away from this product! Over $4000 spent and maybe have cards worth $800

UD’s horrible copy version of Topps Clearly Authentic, is clearly a crap product!!! $30 – $40 more a box than Topps is a complete joke > wait a few weeks and this junk will be on huge discounts

Glad I stayed away from this garbage product!! Watch case breaks and look at the checklist before even thinking about wasting your $$

Way too expensive from the get go. Product like this should be no more than $50/box.

I will be watchin you.. UD
I will be watchin you.. UD

So based on odds above provided by UD..

For each case broken — which is 30 packs
we should see as follows:

3 base autos/parallels – as they are 1:10 overall
(prob 2 X 1:19 and 1 better per case)

10 Rookie autos/parallels-as they are 1:3 overall (prob 7 X 1:3 and 3 X 1:11)
when a better one is hit reduce one of above by 1

2 Rookie Tribute – overall 1:16

1 Tribute HH – overall 1:32

For both these it should be 1 per inner for Rookie Tribute and 1 per case for HH..
but UD odds are just above a inner # or case # to back up that they are not guaranteed in every case or inner – incase you dont get one or two (as applicable)

That leaves 14 other cards in a case to be split amongst all other numbered or perported case hit type inserts based on high odds inserts above.

I personally dont think that UD will stick to these numbers.. as they always bump up production volumes later after the original set breakdowns are set on paper..

so if you are like me – watch for how many numbered or case hit cards appear per case — should be 14 based on the odds provided or basically 1 in 2 packs..
once you see ..thats not whats actually happening — or it is… then thats what will define this as a product worth breaking – to me.

just so many $5 or less autos in a $100 per pack product. will further prove to all that we need another NHL approved licensee – UD – I’ m losin patience with you.

Man, that’s pretty well put. Got to agree with that.

This checklist is brutal. Of course they put odds within the subsets. Can’t wait to get my Conor garland and dan vladar autos. And the legends? So glad we got Arturs irbe instead of Lemieux, Ovechkin, Sakic, modano, Dionne, jagr, iginla and countless other players more meaningful to the game than arturs flippin irbe!

The 5 star is just due to what the hype is on this product. Ir looks awesome. Any idea on when an actual checklist will come out Trey?

It should be out soon but no word yet.

Eagerly anticipating this release, only to see it’s been pushed back yet again! Wasn’t this originally slated for July? And I get it, UD really seems to be milking this whole, “fewer redemptions”, “quality over expediency” mantra lately. But at this point it seems like someone messed up somewhere along the line and they are trying to cover their butts. I saw the poster for this set with the Crosby-signed Malkin card. If they can’t get their promo materials right, what can we expect from the product itself? I think from now on I’ll stick to S1 and S2 only.

Did the release date on this get pushed? I’m seeing September on other sites. Intrigued by this set. Reminds me a bit of buybacks hockey from a few years back. But missing the appeal of genuine young guns.

Looks like it. This set and several others from UD have been pushed back multiple times for 2018-19.

Just an other waste over priced product to waste good money on pieces of card board. This thing cant go on like this Upper Deck has along with Case Breakers control of boxes pricing. The 1 card box actual sale price is no more then $60.00 with tax so pre orders some are asking for 80.00 plus tax is just throwing money down the toilet for low end cards just like freaking Splendor over $200.00 a box and cards selling for under $150.00 Bowman had a offer back in the day that if the set was listed under $100.00 they would buy back, that too was a joke and where is Bowman now. So I doubt that Upper Deck would have the balls to make an offer like that if you buy boxes for $200.00 and cards then selling for $50.00 that Upper Deck should buy the cards back at $200.00 Its time to have more then one company this over pricing and controlling has to stop. Even to go further why do we have so many different thickness on cards only 1 reason so that Ultra Pro can sell more top loaders the old days you only needed 1 size top loader and soft sleeves and 75pt was good for Jersey and Patch cards now we have way to many at way to expensive useless products and once again wasting good money down the toilet.

This is going to be an excellent product, but I can imagine the price is going to be very high.
