2018-19 Upper Deck Chronology Hockey Volume 1 Cards

Utter garbage. Shocked they brought it back for another year after how disastrous it was in Volume 1.

This set of vintage players is an eclectic assortment of superstars, but also popular players who seldom grace sets since retirement. Base cards are numbered to 222. The autograph selection is oustanding, often two in a four card pack. The Letterman subset features a replica colorful nameplate letter, with autographs of players (except those who have passed). Separate autograph cards without any relic are similar, except Andy Bathgate’s sticker auto is there. Several other subsets are also autographed. As a vintage collector, for me this was nirvana. The only drawback to me were Time Capsule cards, where you slit open the back to reveal a mini-card. It sucked with Zenith, and sucks here too. Thus 4 stars, not 5. Modern player collectors, steer clear and let us old fogies reap the benefits.

I came across a Luke Richardson in the Franchise Autos when looking at cards on comc. Do you know anything about it? He’s in the Edmonton section

It took a while to make a decision on this product and after seeing group breaks, that’s the way to go with this product. A couple of nice hits among a big pile of crap. A very niche product for those who watched hockey in the 70’s-2000’s as those are the only collectors who knows who half these players are. I jumped in on a $25 4 box team random, most people got little to nothing, I lucked out with a Brian Leetch auto (a very nice eBay 1/1) and someone else walked away with a Frank Mahovlich auto redemption. That was it for the decent hits.

Side note – this is a rare product which Kevin Lowe signed for. There may be a few other players in this product like this – which may be a draw for some but singles can be acquired for a lower price on the secondary market.

Here is my thoughts… best product for imagery besides series 1..picture of the players show almost the entire make up of equipment and such…love the dated players pictures showing how hockey used to look like…
Card design is great … not full of fillers and waisted blank space… autos all look hard signed and are large enough to suit the card… of course the canvas feel gets top marks in my book…
I can see why people have given this a poor review… everyone wants an Orr or Lemieux auto every pull… but multi autos in a box works for me… and chance to build sets from this over the years appeals to me as well

Rip-off. If I’m going to spend 150$ for four cards then I better get close to my money’s worth. Bought a box and the best card was a base Lemieux. I did pull a Luc Robitaille auto which was nice but, its not even listed in the Beckett. I like high end boxes but once again UD has ripped me off. I would stay away. You’re better off buying SP Authentic and opening multiple packs.

I think the product fills a gap of buying higher end boxes that cost way to much money for just a few hits like the cup, and spending 130 for a box of SPA and get 2 or 3 hits. a small stack of inserts and a fat stack of bulk i hate putting in storage, but also dislike throwing away. i like it. hope they do a vol. 2

I’m just going to keep things nice and simple…. manufactured patches have no reason to be included in a high price point release. Just seeing they are included is enough for me to look at other products/leagues to spend my money on. UD is killing this hobby. This is what happens with exclusive licenses.

Throw this on the trash heap.
Just hit up a Jersey Store and buy a Mark Howe jersey you can actually wear, instead of just getting the “H” in a tiny box.
I like thrm bringing in a lot of these retired grinders but… give me break. Put 15 packs of these in box for $110 and I would possibly consider buying.

Characteristically, I have a bit of a different take than some of the other reviews. Conceptually, I like the product. In an era where people chase a Nico Hischier YG initially worth $100 due to hype that drops to $12 within a year (to say nothing of Pettersson et al), it’s really nice that UD continues to nod to the historical lineage of our game/hobby. An above comment balks at autos such as Craig Ludwig or Jeff Beukeboom. When I was younger, I met Craig Ludwig at the McDonalds across from the old Montreal Forum. I kid you not. I will never forget it because he was wearing a full length white fur coat. I would like nothing more to pull a Ludwig auto, completely oblivious to its monetary value.

However, like I commented on Z11’s break, this product must be a consequence of legalized pot, or teen pregnancy. It is the equivalent of a baked or pregnant teen with the munchies slapping on rice crackers whatever just happens to be in the fridge. We need to infiltrate UD boardrooms during their decision making processes. It must be a standup comedy routine, at your expense. Larry David after a bag of Skittles and two double espressos. Clearly, someone went through other products and poached specific types of cards leveraged to justify price points, whether it be 1-of-1 cut autos, canvas cards, lettered autos, minis, diamonds, quad autos, rip cards, or gold ink. (I hope people enjoy physically ripping cards, because that’s US $150/4=$25 you are tearing to reveal a base mini, fraudulently numbered to confuse you. UD literally “banks” on your endorphin rush.)

This said. I genuinely appreciate the checklist, and the variety, even if it is blatant rehash and trickery re. impossible 1-of-1 dual cut autos or black borders. Why? Precisely because many of these players do NOT sell on the secondary market due to lack of interest/demand. To my mind, the entire raison d’etre of the hobby is to celebrate its historical nature, specifically those like, say, Turk Broda displaced by the hype du-jour around a Carter Hart (no offense to Carter, but you’re still just a rook, brother).

The issue – always and invariably – is the price point. Why on earth do people pay $150 for four cards? Buy a down feather (not white fur) winter coat instead (mindful Ludwig looked like a real life Viking.) I no longer blame UD. I cannot at this point, because the odds are disclosed. Consumers chase their little animalistic physiological fix. Do not complain. Simply do not pay. If you want a Craig Ludwig auto, like I do (mindful he already signed for me when I was a kid), just buy it on eBay. Also, why exactly do people covet a manufactured letter patch of Howie Morenz? Ostentatiousness? IG card envy? I get it. You will pay a few hundred dollars to spell out his name, and then brag about it on FB. (Granted. If that is how you enjoy the hobby, fair enough. But, I too can spell.) Why not buy one of his OPC cards from the 1930s instead, for the price of a box of Chronology? They are actually historical and were circulating among kids when he actually played! Finally, be careful when entering random group breaks. Another issue, unstated, with a time machine of a product: it does not include Vegas, Columbus, Arizona, etc. It would suck to draw Arizona in a group break and have exactly zero percent chance at a card.

This one is on consumers. The product itself is almost inspired, in that uninspired way UD tries to inspire and dignify sticker prices that they know will tank. Like a hyped movie’s tanking box office, post opening.

4 cards. And it’s absolute trash bought two boxes and my must valuable card was the Gretzky base.

Cards are beautiful but come on at the price point of this product, not worth the effort to buy a pack. Total skip for me. Singles are the only way to go and so sad for the person that bought the pack and tries to get some of his money back. 99% not going to happen with this product.

your box will contain a Craig Ludwig auto and a Jeff Beukeboom auto — both worth $0.25 each—on the HI side
Over the years UD has churned out so many of these lower level same player autos.. that you can find many of them in dollar card boxes gathering dust… these are not worth your fresh spend paying UD $50 a hit for maybe $2 – $5 hits.

Box prices are expected to tumble like the temperatures once we hit October

I’ve seen a few group break of this product. Oh boy!!!
So depressing… Box with 4 packs,,,16 boxes to a master case. Let me tell you.. it doesn’t take long to break. A kind of heaven for the breakers. One base card…those damn manufactured patches.. card with diamond…LOL …an autograph (or 2) of a player you may have heard of!!!! All that for $150.00 if you want to buy a box. Again, Upper deck is doing its best to kill the hobby shop, the hobby and…there getting there.

What a joke !!! Autos from journeymen from the past and only 4 cards and out of the 4, 1 base card !!! Don’t waste your money !!

Ok. Most autographs are similar players that always sign for Upper Deck. If you are a fan of bigger fan base teams, you have options.
As a fan of a smaller based franchise I get to chase Chris Phillips cards. I see him in Ottawa all the time at pretty much any event. Not spending on this product.
I did notice an autograph of Stephane Yell from my hometown of Bourget, ON Canada.

I say let Topps have an NHL license. Their digital cards have awesome photos and decent creativity. Panini was terrible and UD seems to going the Panini way putting out a lot of expensive junks sets!

Really???!!! Why all these super unaffordable sets Upper Deck? Honestly we could use Upper Deck Series 3 over another high end set.

No Sven Butenschon? Come on UD! Seriously though, I’ve never been one to support the dudes griping that they can’t flip these cards on ebay. And I feel like if you’re a collector, you generally don’t mind paying a premium for what you want. But I can’t fathom 80% of these cards having any appeal to anyone. Are they going on ePack or something? Is that why it’s so diluted?

I actually like when there are not quite star players getting autos, and cool cards. But not in a product at this price point! They should have done something closer to Panini Classic or Contenders, and put the Kobasews, Lukowichs, Korabs, etc in a better value release.

What happen with upper deck saying when panini stop making hockey cards that they could have better control with less of same product they are flood the hockey card world with set after set of same junk the retail end is crazy and hobby I will not buy in store 150$ a box of 4 cards thst will sell for 5-10$ on ebay ? Panini needs to jump back in licence or not they had better product

Kudos to you Bob. Upper Deck needs to fire the whole office and start over. Upper Deck was a beautiful thing from 1990 to 2010. The last 9 years its been a wishy washy organization. You would think the CEO would do something about it. They need to go back to their grass roots and put better and more affordable products out again. I once only collected and bought upper deck brands. Now after terrible customer service and over priced products I haven’t bought anything the last 5 years from them. This company has lost thousands of dollars from and many others. Its a Corporate company now and that doesn’t work in the card industry.

The only thing worse then all of these high end, insert only sets that UD is making way to many of these days is thinking that a neck beard actually looks good. All these sets are is basically just an autograph delivery system with a gambling aspect built in. You shell out several hundred dollars and hope that you will pull one of the very few cards in the set that are actually worth that kind of money. But of course most people end up with about $30-60 worth of cards of players they don’t collect. I can’t wait for the day that UD is no longer the exclusive rights holder for NHL cards.

Remember when you could get all this in packs for 7$ and build a nice base set ie Classic Signatures….what a scam…

Disappointed with this. I was hoping to get a real set with lots of retired players, instead it’s just another overpriced memorabilia delivery system.
