User Rating:

New to the NHL hobby, 2017-18 Upper Deck Synergy Hockey operates with considerable rarity and extensive parallel choices in mind. Each hobby box averages around 15 color parallels per box, while the rare autographs drop two per inner case.

2017-18 Upper Deck Synergy NHL also ties in with the UD Bounty Program to reward collectors who build the base set.

2017-18 Upper Deck Synergy Base / Rookies

Totaling 100 cards, the 2017-18 Upper Deck Synergy Hockey checklist includes some of the rarest base cards in the hobby. Base Veterans are numbered to 17 copies, while the Legends High Series subjects drop that amount to only eight copies. Similarly, the Rookies are kept to either 18 (cards #51-90) or eight total cards (#91-100).

2017-18 Upper Deck Synergy Hockey Cards 2

Although this might seem daunting, the base parallels are much more common, with Red, Blue, Green and Purple versions. Falling roughly 15 per box overall, these extend to the whole base set. See the full breakdown for the parallel odds below.

The final two cards in the set (#99 and #100) are exclusive to Upper Deck Bounty and are redeemed by building the entire Red set (#1-98). The faster you complete the set, the better the award haul will be. It is important to note that only approximately 1:3 Red variants will have redeemable Bounty codes.

2017-18 Upper Deck Synergy Autographs / Inserts

Although not as much based around the premium hits of other sets, 2017-18 Upper Deck Synergy Hockey does have rare Synergy Autographs (1:40 packs) for top names that fall about 1:5 boxes.

2017-18 Upper Deck Synergy Hockey Cards 4

Finishing with acetate and/or die-cut rainbow foil, the 2017-18 Upper Deck Synergy inserts also have an added low-numbered element of their own. Themed sets include Career Spanning (1:7 packs), Impact Players (1:3 packs) and Noteworthy Newcomers (1:5 packs). Plus, they each have Red Matrix (#/86 or less), Blue Hyperplaid (#/46 or less), and Green Diamond (#/16 or less) parallels.

Another chase of note is the all-metal Cast for Greatness (1:67 packs) insert. The 36-card set features 25 veterans, five legends and six rookies. The final card, Connor McDavid (card #36), is only available through the Bounty Program.

2017-18 Upper Deck Synergy Hockey Cards 5

Broken down into four groupings, Exceptional Talent offers Tier 1 (1:8), Tier 2 (1:16), Tier 3 (1:24) and Tier 4 (1:48) subsets. Finally, the Color Shift insert is a surprise addition that actually changes color when exposed to bright light.

Hello all,
I read the comments and did not buy any packs. I only collected my favorite players through card shows and Ebay buys. This set is cofussing but based on the novelty of it, I think it will be more valuable over time. I have to admit the cards are different from the mainstream ones. I will give UD credit for trying new designs. Because of this, I think it is will be a collectors look for item.

Many, many parallels, way too many. I don’t quite like the quality of the acetates. It’s really hard to hit a big rookie hit. It wants to be a High End collection, but the quality is not there. The Cast for Greatness is a very good idea. I would like to see more metal cards, but the overall design looks cheap and childish. Not a lot of autos, no jerseys/patches. The SP cards are not special in any way. It’s just harder to pull them. I don’t know at what point this way of managing short prints on a large scale is appealing for customers. All in all, a failure from UD.

too expensive

1 hit (auto/jersey) every 7-10 boxes, ummm no thanks. Way too overpriced just to build base sets. As for the bounty program, yeah if you want to buy 2-3 master cases in order to get the 3 cards you need to complete the set. Probably the worst product I have seen.

Average rating, Had to try 1 box to see what all the fuss was about.
I guess I did ok, Anthony Mantha auto. Patrik Laine Impact Players red #25/56. Tavares/Butcher Exceptional Talents. A few other inserts, bunch of Red, bunch of Blue. I did get 2 Denis Gurianov Red – 1 with a code, and one without – to answer JP.
Is the first and last box though.

Player selection stinks. Whole premise of product is to upgrade to a better color. Should have spent a little time on the actual cards. I’ll go back to cracking SPX until something better comes along.

I understand that people may not like this as a box opening because it seems too confusing but there are many parallel collectors out there and this is perfect for them.
The base set is hard to get but there are four other parallel base sets to collect, red being the easiest, then blue, green and purple. Bounty cards add to the set. Overall, I like the look of the cards. I mainly collect inserts but the value of some of the parallel or inserts are not bad. The exceptional talent and career spanning cards are a nice look.

I had no idea what this was when I was in my LCBS so I bought a pack, opened it and then looked up the product config (here) when I got home.

I disagree with the person who said it’s the worst product UD has ever made as that honor belongs to Full Force (and will be very difficult to beat) however this is an easy 2nd place.

This thing just screams of the people at UD having absolutely no idea what the market needs

Has anyone caught any RED colored rookies without a redeemable code (from 91-98) on the back of the card? Looks like they exist but only with the redeemable code. How is one to finnish the red colored cards from 1-98 if the last eight cards (91-98) don’t exist?

Thanks

This stuff’s made for store breakers !! I like the idea of SSP base set and bounty program for some sets, but not all !! It’s a mix of Full Force and Ice cards. Too many Group A autographs. Seriously, Upper Deck need to connect way more with their customers. The marketing department needs fresh blood and real good ideas for products. I can’t believe they replace Fleer Showcase for this product who looks like kindergarden craft.

like someone already wrote way to many rookie card dominated products, if this continues next year we will have sets with 20 star players, 10 legends and 70 rookies.

So I got a few packs just to check it out and feel the cards for myself. I’ve seen them in online breaks and figured they couldn’t be so hideous in person, boy was I wrong.
Most cards were in poor condition my acetate Daniel Sedin had scratches straight out of the pack, Impact Players Peter forsberg 56/56 bent corners. The color effects are just horrible so late 80s early 90s too cool for school

Color parallels is getting really old and needs to be left in the low end products like parkhurst, do something a little more creative at 12$ a pack

This product appears to just be a cash grab. I just participated in a case break and there were 2 signed cards in the case. Everything is a different colour but only 6 numbered cards. No jersey, patch, stick, tags or any memorabilia. There were 5 damaged cards. Collectors don’t collect colour variations anymore, or even sets. We want hardware, we want autographs, we want to collect our player or our team, not a bunch of un numbered colour variations. That was in the 90’s. We have EVOLVED beyond that. Definitely a product to ignore.

The Bounty Program is a red herring. Not even worth pursueing

This product has a nice design but aside from that is a horrible product.

The Bounty program is a cool concept however this going to be a near impossible feat to do unless you buy 2 or more master cases. Usually with the amount of cards in the box/case a 20 box case should to the trick however the collation is horrible in this product. I seen 1 box with the same “base” cards in every other pack. UD better be giving out game used jersey autos to complete this impossible task.

The “hits” in this product are non-existent so there is no motivation to purchase this product aside from chasing the aforementioned bounty. It’s like the series one and series 2 product but with less cards, higher price point and limited cards.

But the nail in the coffin for this product is that out of 4 master cases there were alot of damaged cards. QC for this product is simply not there..

This was a nice try to minic Chrome or Optic/Select but just did not meet up to standards.

Big swing and a miss UD

How can parallel cards be numbered higher than the base? I thought it was dumb in SPGU, and it’s even dumber here. Tiering out the cards to try and fabricate scarcity is out of control at UD. These cards would be better as inserts in another set, not a stand alone set. Plus the price is typical UD…way too high for the content.

No thanks. Complete pass on this one.

What an absolute joke of a product. Maybe one of the worst ever. Wouldn’t be surprised if this stuff didn’t sell at Walmart for $30 a box.

Wish I could give this zero stars. Cards are scratched, ugly and worthless. Completely overpriced and autos are stickers. Upper deck you suck.

On looks alone, this is the worst of the 2017-18 lot so far, by a fairly wide margin, and maybe one of the worst ever. Zero stars. Incredibly cheesy fonts and graphics – this set might be the strongest case yet for the argument that there are just too many sets and variations each year. I’m collecting McAvoy rookies, and by my count, there are 163 unique McAvoy cards so far, and I’m sure I’ve missed a few, with a number of sets still to be released. 163. Either they’re running out of good designs, or every single design and variation conceived is being green lit. Either way, the brand and the hobby lose. Raise the bar. This is weak weak weak sauce. Those in the hobby need to show their disgust with their wallets – don’t buy these garbage sets. Don’t buy into breaks for them. These cards are offensive! The designers and those that approved the design should be fired, then rehired, just so they can be fired a second time.

The box says
“ALL NEW PRODUCT PACKED WITH HITS”
I watched 7 boxes being broken without even ONE HIT in seven boxes.
Apparently Upper Deck has NO CLUE what a “HIT” is..
If you get a red card in every pack – then red cards are not a hit.
If you get a Blue card in every 7 of 8 packs – then blue cards are not hits…
non numbered green or purple parallels are not “HITS”
other non numbered inserts are not hits.
7 boxes – no autos – no jerseys in entire product as Upper Deck is trying to lower their cost of mem used in cards — but they dont lower prices.
A hit is a card that is an auto or mem – or low numbered rookie – not base veterans as they still go for squat no matter the player.
The person or team that worked on this set – needs to be fired, canned etc..
This set is a pathetic product and Upper Deck should be thoroughly embarrassed to have produced this garbage.

This product is down right awful! I don’t see any value in opening this junk. This product will be discounted within 6 months. And even at $50/box it will still be over priced! Brutal!

And I was also looking forward to hard signed, on card autos, but are just sticker autos! Upper Deck is getting lazy with all the sticker autos.

Before it came out I thought it was going to be a great product with all the SPs. But the Rookie Base Card SP are case hits. Just one per 10 box case, and it’s not always a rookie. I just dont think it’s worth it.

Just painfully watched a full case break in which I spent 90 bucks on 2 teams (Leafs and Panthers). Zero autographs and a handful of numbered cards. Hot garbage product from UD.

Bought a box today. Damaged cards on foil corners. Typical Upper Deck damaged cards. Terrible player selection. No # cards. No auto. No memorabilia. Just glorified colored “Ice” acetate cards.
Avoid. Wasted $80.

I agree with Chris and John. Simply a terrible product for the price. All those parallels ,colors, etc. Is there no end to that nonsense? And one autograph every 5 boxes!!
No value at all in this product who will be totally forgotten in a month or less.

You can’t have a product with 1 of 86 different autos, only 1 in every 5 boxes, at this price point. It seems like a money grab in my opinion.

I think this is a great product. Especially for SP and Parallel collectors. The base cards are going to be highly sought after and very valuable. Especially the rookies. The Boeser and McAvoy Rookies /8 are going to be some of the most valuable and sought after rookies cards out there this season. I can’t wait to see what the Tier 3 rookies are going to be priced at on EBay.
