Pushing even further into the upper echelon of high-end collecting, 2016 Topps The Mint Baseball takes their MLB offerings to a new level with only on-card signatures and autograph print runs limited to 99 or less. While the price is sure to eliminate many collectors, the overall card quality is hard to argue with.
Led by current stars and Hall of Fame players, the 2016 Topps The Mint Baseball checklist boasts inscriptions and even gold metallic ink. Another compelling option is the Franklin Batting Glove Book insert with a massive game-used relic. These relics are actually an extra hit at 1:2 boxes so finding one does not replace an autograph.
Of course, at $900+ for a box of five cards (six with the relic), collectors have high expectations for 2016 Topps The Mint Baseball and the set is not without flaws. First, the checklist, while decent, still has multiple names that likely shouldn't have a spot in a product like this, including some less-than-desirable rookies. Also, it is disappointing to see any redemptions at nearly a grand per box and they are not exactly uncommon.

Both legends signed for the Gem 10 insert along with Tim Robbins as Nuke LaLoosh. Obviously, this is in addition to other expected stars such as Ichiro, Nolan Ryan and Mike Trout.
While some can afford to chase the big hits in these boxes, most collectors can merely window shop. Despite the price-per-card breakdown, many singles are selling for much less and offer collectors a good shot at getting a quality autograph relic. Talk about a dog! Box price has plummeted 20 percent since I got one. Did get two boffo cards in it, though, including a Ripken 1/1 (it’s up there). Can’t believe the prices the average cards are fetching. And the checklist is mediocre at best.
