Oozing refined elegance, 2016 Topps Five Star Baseball does premium MLB cards like few other sets. While the price of entry is still on the high side, the two-card box format that debuted in 2015 continues for another year. Also enticing to collectors are the many hits that occupy the set.
In reality, the 2016 Topps Five Star Baseball checklist is fairly simple. Every box yields two autographs and the choices consist of just six main inserts and the cut signatures. Admittedly, the end result for the Autographed Jumbo Patch cards is awkward given the small player image tucked in the corner, but the rest of the designs are very impressive and the on-card autographs are plentiful. Of particular note, the Silver Signatures and Golden Graphs are striking once again and the base design receives an upgrade from 2015.
Although the more limited inserts are mainly current All-Stars and former greats, the massive base autograph set is not quite as strong from top to bottom. Also hurting the potential is the fact that these base signatures are still not numbered. At about $120 a box for two cards, it would be nice to have a firm handle on the individual rarity. It also seems that redemptions are a little more common than would be expected at this price.
Beyond the obvious names, a few surprises are tucked into the release, including Vin Scully and Pele. Neither are first-time signers, but it does offer another intriguing element to 2016 Topps Five Star Baseball. Barry Bonds is also another unexpected signer.
While it still might be tough to justify roughly $60 a card for two autographs that could be unnumbered, singles may be a better route for those looking to pay market value instead of taking a box or case gamble.
