Tapping into both current wrestling fans and old-school enthusiasts, 2012 Topps WWE Heritage wrestling cards take a trip back to the 1980s. Boasting a large base set, several inserts that focus on both the past and the present, legends autographs and more, 2012 Topps WWE Heritage uses 1985 Topps WWF Pro Wrestling Stars as its inspiration.
In 1985, professional wrestling became a pop culture phenomenon. Riding high on the success of Wrestlemania, the popularity of Hulk Hogan and several other superstars, the World Wrestling Federation was king. The year also saw Topps release their first set spotlighting the company. 1985 Topps WWF Pro Wrestling Stars was a watershed moment for wrestling card collectors. It focused on the WWF's superstars, in-ring action and their branching out into pop culture. Like all sets of the era, the format was simple: a handful of base cards and a sticker to go along with a stale piece of gum.
The gum might not be back for 2012 Topps WWE Heritage but almost everything else is and more. The 110-card base set maintains the design of the 1985 set with a large photo, small white border and exploding yellow nameplate. Cards are also printed on vintage-style card stock.
Although there are lots of current superstars in the 2012 Topps WWE Heritage base set, more than half of it is made up of retired (or semi-retired) superstars from the past several decades. The set includes superstars from WWE, WCW and ECW. 2012 Topps WWE Heritage has just one parallel, Black, which is inserted 1:24 packs (one per hobby box).
Complimenting the base set is the 55-card Ringside Action set. These cards focus on the finishers from past and present wrestlers. They carry much the same design elements as the base set.
Every pack also comes with one additional insert. The Superstars Speaks brings back the TV subset from 1985 Topps WWF Pro Wrestling Stars to capture catch phrases from 20 retired stars. Fabled Tag Teams look as some of the best and most popular duos of the last three decades. Lineage has played a major role in sports entertainment, especially when you see all the second- and third-generation superstars wrestling today. The ten-card Family History set looks at some of the familial connections. Eighteen Stickers bring back the classic insert design used in the historic 1985 set, a look that is familiar throughout many of Topps' stickers in the 1970s and 80s.
Besides being the focal point of the packaging for 2012 Topps WWE Heritage, Andre the Giant gets his own ten-card insert set. Andre the Giant Tribute chronicles the storied career of the Wrestlemania III headliner.
Not all the inserts have deep roots in past Topps wrestling sets. Jerry Lawler is a noted artist. His sketch cards have been ultra-rare additions before. Jerry Lawler Portraits offer ten reproductions showing his trademark caricature style. There will also be a total of ten one-of-one Sketch Cards. Allen & Ginter returns to the wrestling ring with a set of 30 mini cards based of the design used in 2012 Topps Allen & Ginter Baseball.
2012 Topps WWE Heritage hobby boxes promise two hits. Autograph signers include legends like Vader, Michael PS Hayes, Doink the Clown, Paul Bearer and "Mean" Gene Okerlund. An interesting inclusion is Charles Wright, who is signing three separate cards: Papa Shango, The Godfather and Kama Mustafa.
Relics include both ring-worn gear and mat relics. Mat relics come from Wrestlemania XXVII.

I bought one hobby box and was just a few cards from getting the base set of 110 cards. I easily completed that buying one hobby jumbo pack and one retail jumbo pack. Lots of doubles in the base set.
(4) allen & ginter, (6) stickers, (6) superstars speak, (3) family history, (2) fabled tag teams, (2) relics, (1) Jerry Lawler portraits, (4) Andre Tributes, (21) ringside action, no autos.
Just to give anyone interested in the cards an idea of what I found in the one hobby box I opened. The doubles didn’t bother me seeing how I had most of the set collected.
