For those who have bought Triple Threads in the past, they know what to expect. The high-end brand is all about different combinations of autographs, memorabilia and low serial numbers, often with different mixes of players. It has long been a polarizing brand. Some complain about its cut-to-the-chase approach, while others adore it for the same reason. 2012 Topps Triple Threads Football is more of the same with a few tweaks and adjustments. At its heart, it's still about the many combinations of autographs, memorabilia and low-numbered cards.
2012 Topps Triple Threads is packed with two mini box-style packs per master box. Each mini box has seven cards with slightly different combinations. Both have three base cards and two parallels. One also has a Triple Threads Rookie Auto Relic and a Triple Relic. The other mini box has a Triple Autographed Relic Card and a Triple Threads Rookie Jumbo Relic.
If you lost track, that's 14 total cards per box, four of which are hits. Everything is numbered.
A case break includes a one-of-one autographed relic card, a triple autographed relic numbered to 27 or less and an autographed relic book card.
The 2012 Topps Triple Threads Football base set has 150 cards. It kicks off with 100 veterans and retired players numbered to 930 or less. Including Printing Plates, there are seven parallels. They range in numbering from 320 all the way down to 1/1 Platinum parallels. All 50 rookie cards come as an autographed triple relic. Numbered to 99, they feature a horizontal design. Like the veteran cards, there are seven parallels. Rookie parallels numbered to 10 or less feature patch swatches.
Other autographed triple relics include Triple Threads Auto Relics. Numbered to 18, each of the 40 cards on the checklist have both a signature and three memorabilia swatches from a veteran player. Up to 15 different Triple Threads Auto Relics Combos (#/27) bring together autographs and swatches from three different players. Both have multiple parallels, include one-of-one White Whale Patch Printing Plates.
2012 Topps Triple Threads Football has several multi-player book cards. Numbered to 18, Triple Threads Auto Relic Pairs (ten cards) pair up players with two autographs and six swatches. Similar Triple Threads Auto Relic Double Combos (ten cards, #/27) have six players, six autographs and six swatches. Five different Luck & RG3 Book Cards (#/10) pair up autographs and relics from the two super rookies. New Leather Bound Book Cards are very different. Their jackets are made from footballs used at the 2012 NFLPA Rookie Premiere. Numbered to 5, the cards have two autographs and six memorabilia swatches.
Not all book cards in the set have multiple players. Triple Threads Jumbo Plus Autograph Relics (10 cards, #/3) have an autograph, two patch pieces and a jumbo relic swatch. Letter Plus Autograph Relics (10 cards, #/3) have a letter patch, two patch swatches and a signature.
Triple Threads Cut Above Autographs are one-of-one cut signature cards that also have three relic swatches. ThreeTriple Threads Dual Cut Above Autographs double up the cut signatures and memorabilia in book card format.
As always, 2012 Topps Triple Threads Football continues to bring some wild memorabilia combinations. Numbered to 36, basic Triple Threads Relics have three memorabilia pieces from a single player. A large checklist of up to 50 players ensures individual cards are somewhat tough to find. Forty differerent Triple Threads Relics Combos bring together three different players with three different swatches. One-of-one Triple Threads NFL Shields have a shield patch put alongside two basic relic pieces. Triple Threads Quarterback Immortals celebrate the games greatest pivots. Triple Threads Jumbo Patch Combos are monstrous three-panel book cards that has three players, each with their own jumbo patch.
Every 2012 Topps Triple Threads master box has one single-relic card from a member of the 2012 rookie class. Available in signed and unsigned versions, up to 55 rookies are on the checklist. The cards also have five parallels.
2012 Topps Triple Threads has a handful of prize redemptions for full-sized autographed jerseys and helmets. Additional redemptions are available for autographed hand stamp cards from top 2012 rookies. Similar to the Touched by Greatness Cal Ripken cards found in 2012 Topps Archives Baseball, players use a glove to apply a hand print directly on an over-sized card. The cards also have an on-card autograph.

2012 Topps Triple Threads Football Product Review

Good: While Topps could easily rest on past success with this brand, they continue to push the collecting envelope with new designs on some of their most sought-after rookie autographs. Topps also brings out a new variation to the Triple Threads Rookie autograph collector. Every box delivers two Relics and two autographs -- one of each in every pack. It’s refreshing to see Topps reinvent their base rookie autographs. These cards are very sharp.
Bad: Not every box delivers the huge hits. Has some issues with chipping and such, which seems to be a common problem in almost all recent releases that use thick cards.
The Bottom Line: Topps Triple Threads football is a set that offers plenty of potential for those that enjoy high-end products. Once again, Topps has put together an awesome list of multi-player and signature relics that should be in high demand.
Card Design: 3.5/5.0
The design of the base cards and parallels is very nice. I like the simple design that doesn’t try and do too much. Photographs have players in nice action shots. What's nice about this product is the thick card stock and modest, understated amounts of stamped silver foil. All base cards are numbered to 989. Collectors can expect an average of three per mini-box. You will also likely find two Gold parallels numbered to 99.
The hit cards are the main selling point of this product. You get two autographs and two relics per master box. Every year, Triple Threads boasts some of the most attractive autographs and memorabilia cards. Relics have jersey swatches cut out in many combinations, including statistic accomplishments, jersey numbers, initials, nicknames and team names. The majority of the relics have low serial numbers. In particular, the autographs look great despite their stickers. For such a high-end and popular product, the autographs should be on-card and hopefully can be corrected in future releases.

The 100-card base set features a mix of all-time greats and the games top stars. 2012 Topps Triple Threads Football, as always, has a ton of autographed and player-worn rookie cards. The checklist includes pretty much anyone you would be interested in collecting. The checklist is very heavy on first-year players. Collectors can expect the majority of their hits to come from rookies.

2012 Topps Triple Threads Football probably isn't for those collectors on a tight budget. At around $175-200 dollars a box, it's a high-risk, high-reward type of product. If you land something really big, the value can be huge. But if you don't make a big hit, it's bound to be a letdown. The two guaranteed hits in every pack make sure that all collectors come away with something.
That said, I'm not very sure the value is there. First off, where are the patches? With this product being as expensive as it is, why aren't there more patches? Plentiful plain swatches aren't very desirable to most collectors anymore.
The Fun Factor: 4.0/5.0
Overall, I really like this product. That said, I think it has the potential to be that much better. The simple design is great and the hits really make it look like a premium product. The price is not for everyone, but the excitement of hitting something huge can make it a blast. For hit seekers, the guaranteed autographs and relics are exciting. The combination of serial numbers and parallels ensure every pack offers something different.

2012 Triple Threads Football. Just got a box in the mail and opened it right away. Pulled an Andrew Luck Relic card, and a Foles auto. Enjoyed opening both packs, and I may buy another box soon.
