Product Review
2012 Topps Pro Debut Baseball Product Review
Reviewed by Paul Lesko
Good: Just like the 2011 Topps Pro Debut product, it is fun to collect minor league players in their minor league uniforms. The base cards are more fun to collect than the autographs. The lower price helps too.
Bad: Compared to this year’s Bowman products, the autograph checklist is weak. Plus, they’re stickers. Also, and just like last year, with the various Bowman releases and 2012 Topps Heritage Minor League Baseball on the way, it is difficult to grasp the purpose of this product.
The Bottom Line: If you want a product that does a good job of representing the minor leagues, this is your product. If you are looking more for autographs of the up-and-coming players, stick with Bowman.
Card Design: 4.4/5.0
The base set design is enjoyable as it matches well with 2012 Topps Baseball, without the overabundance of gold gimmick cards. The only real inserts are the All-Star cards, which I found informative because of the additional information they give about players that we're still learning about. Plus, they highlight who might be more collectible than others.
Thanks to sticker autograph, like last year, the autographed card design is not that impressive. Some give a phoned-in feeling because the stickers are applied crooked. Check out this Charlie Stilson:
And to add further insult, this is the same picture we saw of him in Bowman.
Sure, I couldn't find any other repeat photos of players, but I am a Cardinals fan, so this one jumped out at me.
Checklist: 4.0/5.0
The base checklist is loaded. But given how long most players stay in the minors, it has good deal of repetition from last year's set. However, this is a product where the base set is more enjoyable than the inserts or autographs.
And speaking of autographs, the checklist is not stellar. With the exception of the dual autographs, few are commanding high prices on the secondary market.
Value: 4.4/5.0
Much like going to a minor league game, Topps Pro Debut is less expensive. For the price, it's a good product. It's also priced below Bowman, and delivers two autos and two relics per hobby box.
The Fun Factor: 5.0/5.0
Like last year, I really enjoyed this base set, but was disappointed by the autographs. But that's not the point of this product. Buy Bowman for the autographs. Buy Topps Pro Debut for everything but the autos.

Checked out a pack to try something new, pulled an All-Star. Didnt recognize most of the players but thats alright. I will prolly stick to the majors but I see its niche but I think Bowman already has is locked down.
