The past and the future collide with 2012 Topps Heritage Minor League Baseball. Using 1963 Topps Baseball as its inspiration (not to mention continuing on with 2012 Topps Heritage), baseball's top prospects come together in a set for set builders, prospectors and fans of modern vintage. And for one collector, it will mean a chance to be a minor leaguer for a day, complete with their own press conference, baseball card and meeting with Nolan Ryan.

The 225-card base set includes such blue chippers as Dylan Bundy, Danny Hultzen, Jackie Bradley Jr. and Oscar Taveras. And what would a Topps Heritage set be without short prints? Inserted 1:6 packs, the final 25 cards on the 2012 Topps Heritage Minor League checklist make putting a complete set together an attainable challenge. Twenty-five cards also have variations that are even more limited. The base set has Black-Bordered (1:8), Blue-Bordered (1/1) and Printing Plates.

Every 24-pack box comes with two autographs and one relic card. One of the biggest draws of the Real One Autographs in the MLB version of Topps Heritage is that it features on-card signatures. Although signatures are on stickers in 2012 Topps Heritage Minor League, the set does come with a significantly lower price tag. The Black (#/50), Blue (1/1) and Printing Plate parallels carry over from the base set. Real One Dual Autographs have two signatures and are numbered to 15.

Another familiar name leads the memorabilia card lineup. Clubhouse Collection Relics come with several versions and parallels including dual relics (#/25), patch cards (#/15) and autographed patches. Also falling under the relic banner are Hat Logo Patches featuring manufactured patches.

Baseball's premier up-and-comers are highlighted in Prospect Performers, a somewhat common insert that falls 1:4 packs.

While many collectors enjoy getting cards with pieces of game-used equipment, most would rather have the full piece. 2012 Topps Heritage Minor League is offering just that with a handful of prize redemptions that are good for equipment used in a MiLB game.

However, the ultimate prize comes in the form of a one-day contract with the Corpus Christi Hooks. The Make Your Pro Debut includes a full experience with the team including a press conference, uniform, batting practice, time in the owner's box during the game (with Nolan Ryan, no less) and a post-game meal. Topps is also reserving a spot in 2012 Topps Pro Debut so the winner can have their own baseball card.

Product Configuration: 24 packs per box, 9 cards per pack

2012 Topps Heritage Minor League Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Paul Lesko

Good: The 1963-inspired base set is awesome. It's also a very inclusive minor league product. This is one of the few products where the base set is what most collectors will want.

Bad: Sticker autographs for a minor league product? That should be a crime. Also, because this is a very inclusive minor league product, five years from now, the vast majority of these cards will likely be unwanted by most collectors (other than family members of the players, maybe).

The Bottom Line: If you are a prospector, it's a fun set to build. If you like autographs, stick with Bowman.

Staff Rating:
4.4 / 5.0

Card Design: 4.8/5.0

The throwback design is phenomenal. Each card captures the vintage 1963 Topps feel. The comics on the back of each card also are a nice touch that differentiates this product from other minor league products.

Make no mistake, this is a standalone minor league product. For me, it's different from Bowman because I actually want the base set. With 24 packs, the set is nearly complete after a single box.

Also, it's good to see that those bizarre color tinted parallels from last year have been replaced by easier-on-the-eyes, black-bordered parallels.

The worst part of this product is the autographs. Two per box is a great, but they're stickers. Sure, this product is trying to fill a niche (it's a less expensive, more inclusive, gimmicky Bowman product), but when you're dealing with minor leaguers, it would seem that on-card autographs should be the way to go.

Checklist: 4.0/5.0

The test of this checklist is the future. Now, given that we are two draft classes removed from Mr. Bryce Harper's, the name recognition in this product is considerably less. Still, stars will emerge from this product over the next few years. So, while I think this is a mediocre checklist today, a few years from now, this could change drastically.

Don't get me wrong, there are some great names in this product: Hamilton, Bundy, Bradley. But compared to recent years, it's just not the star power we're used to.

And really, when one of the big draws in this product is a Billy Hamilton autographed relic that comes with a phoned-in autograph (to be fair, that is his autograph on all trading cards), how much of a treat is that?

Really, I can't help but think that five years from now, 99% of this checklist will be unknowns who never get called up. If that's so, 99% of this box will be kindling.

Value: 4.2/5.0

For the price (less than Bowman products), and given that there are two autographs and one memorabilia card per box, 2012 Bowman Heritage Minor League is a good deal. It's also a different product from Bowman because you want to collect the base set here, not the autographs. I don't think this is a product that will hold its value, but you never know. The next great rookie might have one of his first cards in this set.

The Fun Factor: 4.8/5.0

Like last year, I loved this product. It has enough contrast from other prospect-driven products to have a unique niche. I hope to see it again next year.

Ryan is a former member of The Cardboard Connection Writing Staff.   His collecting origins began with winter bike rides to the corner store, tossing a couple of quarters onto the counter and peddling home with a couple packs of O-Pee-Chee hockey in his pocket. Today, he continues to build sets, go after inserts with cool technologies, chase Montreal Expos and finish off his John Jaha master collection.

2012 Topps Heritage Minor League Baseball
Reviewed by Jeremy Sebastian

Good: Three hits per box, including two autographs, lots of potential superstars, three numbered parallels per box.

Bad: All autographs are stickers, only one basic insert set, lots of packs with only base cards.

The Bottom Line: 2012 Topps Heritage Minor League Baseball is low-end product that is a solid option for prospect collectors. It’s all about minor leaguers. If you’re someone who’s looking for established stars, this isn’t the product for you. However, with the variety of up-and-comers, 2012 Bowman Heritage Minor League could end up having plenty of superstars a few years from now.

Staff Rating: 3.75/5.0

Card Design: 3.0/5.0
Design has never been a huge concern for the Topps Heritage as it draws from sets from decades ago. If you’re someone who yearns for yesteryear designs, then 2012 Topps eritage Minor League should right up your alley. However if you’re someone who likes flashy new designs, you may be disappointed. With only one basic insert set, the wow factor isn’t there. I do like the flat old-school finish to the cards. It makes this a great set for those who like to collect autographs either in person or through the mail. I understand why the design is the way it is, but I think Topps could dig a little deeper use some different designs from the past for the insert sets also.

Checklist: 4.5/5.0
It’s hard to complain about a set that consists of 225 of the hottest prospectss. If you’re a prospector, this set is guaranteed to have many of the players you collect. Also, 225 is the ideal size for this set. It makes it easier to build a set as opposed to other baseball sets that might run 500 cards or more. Also, cards 201-225 are short prints that fall 1:8 packs. They make for a challenge, but nothing too extreme.

Value: 3.5/5.0
With 2012 Topps Heritage Minor League, you get three hits a box, which is nice. And while there are some bigger names in the set, you can just as easily end up pulling three hits of guys you’ve never heard of that might only sell for a couple bucks now. That’s where the collector has a decision to make. Do you sell low now? Or do you sit on your hits and wait to see if the guy you pulled an autograph of is the next Mike Trout? Decisions, decisions.

The Fun Factor: 4.0/5.0
2012 Topps Heritage Minor League Baseball is a fun product to open. Without breaking the bank, you get a product that delivers a ton of prospects (over 200 per box) and several hits. Plus, every full hobby box should get you pretty close to a full set (minus the SP’s). It’s also neat to see all of the minor league teams names and logos on the cards. I got a few laughs from seeing just how ridiculous some of the minor league team names are (Flying Squirrels, Storm Chasers, Nuts, River Bandits, Lumber Kings, etc.).
