1963 was a tumultuous year in America. The Civil Rights movement was reaching its peak, Martin Luther King had a dream and the Vietnam War escalated. This was all capped off by the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Through it all, baseball helped America ease the stress, capped by the Dodgers' World Series sweep of the New York Yankees. 2012 Topps Heritage Baseball aims to capture 1963 and bridge it with the present day, bringing the familiar mix of old and new that has made it one of the most collected brands in the hobby. Based on the classic 1963 design, the 500-card base set includes a variety of subsets and 75 short prints. Every hobby box includes either an autograph or memorabilia card and a handful of inserts. The formula is much the same as in years past, a further testament to Heritage's deeply rooted popularity.

Product Configuration:
24 packs per box, nine cards per pack
Price Point: Low- to Mid-End Baseball Card
Target Audience: Set Builders, Vintage Card Collectors, Heritage Fans, 1963 Topps Baseball Fans, Old-Time Baseball Fans, Nostalgic Baseball Card Collectors

2012 Topps Heritage Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Jeremy Sebastian

Good: The 1963 throwback design is sure to please plenty of old-school collectors to the product. The set has 75 base short prints that give set builders an added rush of having to work to build a base set. The set has 500 cards, so if you're a collector of lesser-named players, there's a good chance your favorite player has made his way into 2012 Topps Heritage Baseball. Every pack opened had either a hit, insert, parallel, or a short print. 2012 Topps Heritage Baseball hobby boxes also have one box-topper, which is either a three-card panel of 2012 Heritage cards or a stamped 1963 Topps Baseball buyback.

Bad: Unless you're looking for them, you can pass right by most of inserts due to their bland nature. With only one hit per box and boxes running around $65-$80, it's tough for collectors to find much secondary value in 2012 Topps Heritage Baseball, at least on a box-by-box basis. Numbered cards are scarce. Outside of the three Chrome parallels per box that are numbered to 1963, you won't find many numbered cards in this release.

The Bottom Line: 2012 Topps Heritage Baseball is a nice set if you're a fan of old-school releases. From the 1963 theme to the 500-card base set, this is truly a set for those looking for a nostalgia fix. Staying with the theme of old-school, hits are rare compared to most current releases. If you're looking for a product to flip and make money off of, 2012 Topps Heritage Baseball probably isn't the best option. On the flip side, if you enjoy a product that brings back memories of collecting cards as a kid, this is an excellent choice.

Staff Rating:
3.5 / 5.0

Card Design: 4.0/5.0

The 2012 Topps Heritage Baseball card design is a throwback to 1963 Topps Baseball. It is more colorful than your typical modern base sets. Unfortunately, the inserts stick with the throwback theme. In this case, it isn't a good thing. The inserts don't jump out at all, especially when compared to what most collectors are used to with many modern sets.

Checklist: 5.0/5.0

2012 Topps Heritage Baseball has a 500-card base set that includes team cards, league leaders, two different versions of rookie cards (single-player and 4-player cards), 2011 highlights, and managers. No matter what player you collect, there's a good chance he has a card in this set. And for all the old school set-builders, the large checklist and 75 short prints should keep them busy for a while.

Value: 2.5/5.0

For a box that will cost you about $70, the monetary value is tough to find in 2012 Topps Heritage Baseball. With only one hit per box and autographs falling approximately one per case, your odds of hitting a box with good value are slim. That's not to say there aren't any monster hits in this release because there are. Just know that they're an exception, especially when breaking boxes one at a time.

The Fun Factor: 2.5/5.0

I didn't have much fun with this set. Being a fan of memorabilia and autograph cards, once I got my hit, there wasn't much else to get excited about. Add to that, the lackluster inserts didn't add much excitement. That said, it's not all bad. With a handful of variations and error cards, each pack will have you digging through your base cards in hopes of finding one.

And is there anyone willing to sell their #d cards – I need a few Clubhouse Collection Dual Auto Relics and ROA Dual. Autos and ROA single Blue and Red Autos

Fantastic set. I have been building the Master Set of approx. 2,274 cards and am about 75% of the way there with all the cards I have graded by PSA. Quite an adventure. One question I need help with is the overall checklist. There are variations of the Clubhouse Collection Relics (jersey and bat at times) yet I cannot find a checklist showing this. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thank you,

This is a great set for collectors who love nostalgia, such as myself. I’ve been collecting since I was a kid and I just love the old look of these cards!

How could you not like a set that takes today’s players and puts them on an old card design? It’s a brilliant concept!

Also the “Real One” autos, refractors and HOF inserts are definitely value added. I really like these cards!

I pulled a number 2 out of 25 Stan Musial flashback relic auto our of a Walmart Blaster Box. Extremely RARE! Anyone know the value or how to get it graded? From what I have seen it’s valued at least at 400 right? Anyone want to buy it? Number 2 out of 25!

I just got 3 of the blaster boxes at wal mart and i love the cards because i was born in 1963 and i plan to try and complete the set if possible.I wish topps would do some based on 1970-1975 that would bring back some memories. If you love the old slyle cards this set and all the heritage sets are for you.

Hi Ryan,
Good Day to ya! I clicked on the link for the checklist and it won’t load, says something to the fat that it doesn’t start with”%PDF.”? Where else can I get the checklist from for the MANY different variations? Thank you, and keep up the great work here!

David Bonneville (ID 39638) » Thanks for pointing it out Dave! I just uploaded a new version. I also emailed a copy to you.

I Love the Heritage series but the producers did not do their homework …tyhey included numerous rookie errors, left out team cards , and catered to the yankees again. Couldn,t they find enough rookies so the didn,t reproduce the samre ones? Steve Lombardiozzi 4 times? Seriously

I have collected Topps cards since 1958. I have all the Tigers cards from the 1963 topps set.

When topps created the 2012 Heritage cards they technically blundered on the position of the photos on the Leader Cards.

Card #2 Miguel Cabrera Should be in the Middle Position as he WON the Batting Tittle.
Card #6 Justin Verlander should be in the middle position as he WON the ERA Tittle
Card #8 Justin Verlander should be in the middle position as he WON the Strikeout Tittle
Card #10 Justin Verlander should be in the middle position as he WON the Most Wins Tittle

I have antisipated the new Heritage depicting the winners of the pitching and batting tittles with these
Detroit Tigers players, who did lead the league in the respective catagories, by being placed in the MIDDLE Position
as was done in the original 1963 Topps.

See all the Topps Detroit Tiger Cards from 1952 to 1990 on my web sight tigerjim13.com

I will take these leader cards and digitally reposition the leaders to their correct positions for myself.

I am very disappointed at this mental error in the Topps company.
