Something that's "five star" doesn't strive to simply be good. It has to reach beyond great and stand above everything else. 2012 Topps Five Star Baseball follows in the ultra high-end footsteps of the Five Star Football line, packing a ton of big hits in every five-card box.

Get a real-time look at the 50 hottest 2012 Topps Five Star Baseball cards currently listed on eBay.

2012 Topps Five Star Baseball boxes include one autograph from a current player, another from a retired star, one autographed relic, an autographed book or additional autograph, and a jumbo memorabilia card. All autographs in 2012 Topps Five Star Baseball are on-card.

All Active Player Autographs are numbered to 150 or less. Rainbow parallels are numbered to 25. Numbered to 10, Active Player Quotable Autographs come with an inscription. Retired Player Autographs follow a similar pattern, except the basic versions are a little more plentiful, numbered to 208 or less. Rainbow parallels (#/25) and Retired Player Quotable Autographs (#/10) also appear.

While a lot of sets promise a lot of ink, they often fill checklists with a lot of less-desirable players. This isn't the case with 2012 Topps Five Star. While not every player is a Hall of Famer, the vast majority are among the most coveted in the hobby today. Active players max out at 40 players. They include Yu Darvish, Josh Hamilton, Albert Pujols, Brett Lawrie, Chipper Jones, Justin Verlander and Yoenis Cespedes. Retired signers are highlighted by Ken Griffey Jr, Cal Ripken Jr, Willie Mays, Frank Thomas, Sandy Koufax, Hank Aaron and Carlton Fisk.

Autograph Relic cards mix a signature with a swatch. The checklist is limited to 40 players and each card is numbered to 97 or less. Two parallels also exist: Gold (#/55 or less) and Rainbow (#/25). Twenty players also have Autographed Patch cards numbered to 5.

Book Cards comes with either three memorabilia pieces and an autograph, four swatches and a signature or a jumbo patch. All are numbered to 99 or less. Gold parallels are numbered to 10 and Rainbow parallels are one-of-ones. Five Star Dual Signature Book Cards and Five Star Dual Signatures Patch Book are both limited to 10 numbered copies and have autographs from two players. Pairings include Nolan Ryan and Yu Darvish, and Ken Griffey Jr with his father, Ken Griffey Sr. A total of 25 one-of-one cards have two autographs and logo patches. Additional Autographed Book Cards comes with four (ten cards, #/10 or less), six (five cards, #/5) or eight (three cards, #/5) signatures. Collectors can also hunt for one-of-one Cut Signature Autograph Book Cards.

Jumbo jersey and patch cards come in a variety of combinations with both retired and active players. Active Player Jumbo Jersey Relics have a checklist of 50 players, each limited 92 copies or less. Gold parallels are numbered to 25. Thirty players also have one-of-one Rainbow versions with over-sized patch swatches. A total of 25 retired players make up the Legends Relics checklist (#/25). Twenty Dual Legends Relics are numbered to 10. Patch cards vary from two to eight players. Other highlights include Letter Patches from the backs of game-used jerseys, Bat Plates (30 cards, 1/1) and Bat Knobs (30 cards, 1/1).

2012 Topps Five Star Baseball sees the debut of the Five Star Club. Besides a personalized membership card, participants get exclusive baseball and football cards, VIP treatment at major shows and events Topps attends and quarterly calls with Topps staff. How do you join the Five Star Club? We'll have the details as soon as Topps announces them.

2012 Topps Five Star Baseball Product Review

Reviewed By Mike Smeth

Good: Huge big hit potential, Extremely strong checklist, Limited Print Run, All autographs are on-card

Bad: Widespread condition issues, Box cost, Too many low quality one-color jersey patches, Too much repetition of checklist subjects from subset to subset

The Bottom Line: When I first heard that Five Star was making the jump to the Baseball Diamond I was thrilled. Unlike some of the folks who are reading this review, I wasn't collecting sports cards back in the early 2000s when the super-premium sports card set was introduced by Upper Deck Exquisite debuted, thus . So I was really pumped to be around for the first truly super-premium baseball card set.

Alas, the freshmen offering of Topps Five Star Baseball is plagued by an uncharacteristically high number of issues that keep it from realizing its true potential. Far and away the biggest of the problems is the condition of the cards. There have been numerous reports from collectors across the country regarding damaged pulls they made. The number one complaint is card chipping. It's important to note that the majority of cards show minor damage or no damage at all. But at this price point, there really is no excuse for delivering damaged cards to collectors.

Before you fork over $400 bucks for a box of Five Star make sure your expectations are realistic. You will be buying a product that gives you better odds of pulling big names and bit hits then any other product on the market. But just because the probability is higher doesn't mean its a sure thing. You can also expect to pull a very nice selection of current MLB star and MLB Hall of Famer autographs. Heck, you might even pull one of the many multi-auto book cards or a jumbo patch card.

I don't think I've ever pulled autographs of more then 1 Hall of Famer from a single box (the exception being multi-auto cards). I pulled 2 Hall of Famer autographs and 1 soon-to-be first ballot Hall of Famer autograph from my 2012 Topps Five Star Baseball box. And opening the box was a ton of fun.

I really hope that Topps cleans Five Star up and comes back with a vengeance in 2013 as I like having a super-premium brand in the baseball card industry. However, in the meantime 2012 Five Star Baseball has already dropped to the $360's, making it an increasingly tempting option for big hit thrill seekers with the money to spare.

Staff Rating:
3.0 / 5.0

Card Design: 1.0/5.0

I really don't know what Topps was thinking when they designed 2012 Five Star Baseball. We're talking about the most high end baseball card product ever released. Topps has far and away the best overall product designs of any card manufacturer, so it would stand to reason that they would put the entire might of their highly talented design team towards creating what was supposed to be the crown jewel of their 2012 baseball card product lineup. It's not that the product looks bad. It just doesn't look like the Rolls Royce of baseball card sets should look. The best looking cards in the set are the multi-color patches and the Silver Ink Autographs, which look fantastic. And though I'm not impressed with the overall set design, I will say that the cards looks better in person then they do in scans.

Whoever was in charge of QC and gave the go-ahead to have this product packed out and sealed for shipment really, really dropped the ball. Because there is absolutely no excuse for having so many condition related problems in a $40 per box product, much less a $400 per box product.

That said, I haven't seen many Five Star Baseball cards with serious damage. A couple of the cards in my box had rounded corners and/or chipping, but the damage wasn't too serious, and thus didn't have much of an impact on the aesthetic appeal of the card. But for people looking to have their cards professionally graded, this sort of damage will be a much bigger deal.

Checklist: 4.3/5.0

Condition issues aside, 2012 Topps Five Star Baseball delivers a very strong all-around checklist. Does it guarantee that you will pull $100+ hits in every box? No - but it does give you the best odds I've ever seen of pulling multiple autographs of MLB All-Stars, Hall of Famers and/or hot rookies from a single hobby box. There is definitely something to be said for that.

There are a couple of qualms I have with the checklist. First off, there is too much repetition in the checklist from subset to subset. The problem with that is it negates some of the value of the limited print run of the set as it drastically increases the amount of autographs many of the players have in the set, thereby hurting their value on the secondary market. My other issue is the inclusion of a bit too many lower tier players in the set. Players like Dan Uggla, Dave Kingman, Edgar Martinez, Bill Buckner, Luis Tiant, John Kruk and Paul O'Neil simply have no business in this product. But percentage wise these players make up a small minority of the overall checklist - though that offers little in the way of reassurance if you find yourself breaking a box with more then one of the players taking up autograph spots that could have been occupied by big name stars.

Value: 3.0/5.0

Condition issues aside, 2012 Topps Five Star Baseball delivers a very strong all-around checklist. Does it guarantee that you will pull $100+ hits in every box? There is definitely something to be said for that.

If you aren't comfortable shelling out that kind of cash for Five Star given the condition concerns and the polarizing reviews, Topps' has several other premium MLB releases from this year that I'd highly recommend - 2012 Tribute Baseball and 2012 Triple Threads Baseball. Topps Tribute actually packed out their hits in factory sealed plastic cases, which means the condition of the cards overall were fantastic. For the price of one box of Five Star you could purchase 2 hobby boxes of Triple Threads. Just a couple of alternative options to keep in mind.

The Fun Factor: 4.0/5.0

There is something about opening a premium product like 2012 Topps Five Star Baseball that just can't be matched by any mid-price product. Some people might say its a form of gambling. I wouldn't go that far. All I know is that the box break was very intense. Despite lasting only a couple of minutes, the excitement leading up to the break was just as enjoyable.

If you enjoy high end products and you have the disposable income, I think that Five Star is worth a shot. Don't do it expecting to open the best product ever made. Don't do it expecting to open the best product this year. Instead, do it because it gives you better odds of striking gold then virtually any other baseball card on the market. And most importantly, do it if this sounds like a product you would enjoy. But remember that there are some great alternatives like 2012 Topps Tribute Baseball and 2012 Topps Triple Threads Baseball, so go with the product that resonates best with you.

To all of the negative nancies out there:

Just like all high-end, expensive products, this is high-risk / high-reward. I have seen it stated else where in staff reviews on cardboardconnection, and I say the same thing literally all the time to people who are either new to the hobby, or getting back into it like I did this year after 15 year absence from collecting:

If the price tag scares you, you have no business purchasing the product. Even if you are unsure whether you can afford it or not, you cannot afford it. Period. End of story.

And if you do purchase the product and are disgusted with how much you spent on a box that was a miss, then you should not have spent that money. It was too expensive for you.

Baseball card collecting is NOT a money-making venture, unless you own a hobby shop or run a website like this one. Then, hobby shops are diversified, and websites like this one make most of their income from advertising based on number of hits.

I purchased one box and was super excited to open then super let down when the best card in the box was a Vida Blue silver signature. A lot of money for poor quality cards!

Condition of the cards is definitely below standard for the product cost.

I only purchased 1 box at about $400 but overall my break seems to be better than many.

J Meger » That’s a fantastic break! The Hank Aaron would have made it solid on its own. The Bat Barrel is very cool. Congrats!

Topps should call this crud Topps One Star and is not clearly worth $500 it should be worth about $200
Here is what I got:
Dennis Ecersley auto/150
Lawrie auto jersey /97
Ethier auto /150
Hosmer Jumbo Relic/100
Derek Jeter Base /80

No way would I spend $500 (well down now to $400)on 5 Star. I haven’t seen many cards = from the set without chipping. The checklist has a bunch of names but I really don’t want a Bill Buckner, John Kruk, Robin Venture, George Bell or Dave Kingman autograph from a $500 a pack product.
I’d rather spend the money on certified HOF autos from other sets: See 1992 Pinnacle Joe DiMaggio autos, several Mickey Mantle autos are also available for less than the current price point of 5 Star.
–Jeff

Nice looking cards, but not much value in a box ($400). Which is why your best bet is to pick up the singles you want off of Ebay.

These cards are super thick. The thickness lends itself to corner damage. Which is disappointing for such a high end product. Finding supplies to protect your cards may be an issue.

I can’t believe that topps would put out a product with such a high price and such a poor quality. The autos are weak and the numbering is too high. #208? are you kidding me! try 28 and i’ll consider it. Not to mention how their dinged up from the start.

Well I do not like to bash products…. but it does not get much worse! Keep your hard earned money this product is simply a waste. Typical Topps product watered down with tons of useless garbage. Who collects C.J. Wilson, Topps is surely out of their minds putting players of this level in a top of the line product. I told my dealer to keep my box after watching 4 cases broke. There was one card worth it’s price tag of $475.00+ a box. Also most cards are chipped up packaging is the worst.
Donate your money to a good charity, you will have a better feel than opening this product.
Oh yeah. Highlight of the box I passed on was a Paul Molitor Auto # /25. Wow impresive.

It isn’t worth the money!! U won’t come close to break even on a case…even if you do it!! The cards are damaged from the get go and the majority of the autographs won’t get u 20 bucks on ebay!! Save your money or get in on something legit…topps should rename this crap one star rather than five!! Stay away at least until it gets around 300… at 500 its a joke!!

I saw a couple of these boxes opened and I was so suprised by the damaged on the corners. Being such a high end product you would think the cards come with plastic covering or sleeves but they are just inserted in the foam box. Really scarry to see a high end product with damage right form the get-go!

If this product was at 150$ it would deserve its name, but 450$ make it way lesser than its stable fellows Museum and Tribute. I have seen many cases opened, there were no 1/1s, no patches, the autographs lineup is weak and there are too many redemptions, and I don’t even factor in the trouble with chipping, since you know that on card autos would bring this problem. Five stars? I would call it Three stars (out of five).

Love the on card sigs and hate the price above $400/box

Best of the best. Save your money and get in on this stuff. On card autos, LOTS of HOF’s to get, just amazing product. ONLY downside, some chipping on cards, aside from that…/drool

I seen 8 cases opened today and was not impressed. The autographs were sub par and the chipping on the sides and edges were not good. Most of the booklet/book cards were redemptions. If you are going to pay $450.00+.Redemptions shouldn’t be allowed.I was thinking about buying a box but after seeing this 8 box case break.I think i’ll hold off.

Opened my 1 box today and got:
Braun Auto /150
Hosmer Auto+Jsy /97
Ethier Silver Auto /99
Fergie Auto /208
Seaver Jsy /25
Longoria base /80

I don’t think it could have gone much worse. Topps shouldn’t be allowed to sell a product for over $400 if this is the type of return you might end up with.

Probably very good can’t afford no job the dream of buying a box and getting the Babe Ruth cut signature won’t happen

Bob Patterson

I small nitpick. Just based on the Prince Fielder card shown, isn’t it about time that single color swatches (not a patch) go away? I mean imagine how someone might feel if they got that card after spending so much money.

Looks awesome!!
To bad its so expensive if lower price than would be 5 star rating.

Excellent product, it is really too bad that I have to watch others break it all open. The price is insane to the collectors with a budget.
