User Rating:

2012 Topps Chrome Football isn't about changing the game. It's about offering what the brand is famous for, tweaking it along the way. Refractors, rookie autographs and classic Topps designs all aim to shine (literally and figuratively).

Every hobby box has an autograph, 24 rookie cards, several inserts and a handful of Refractors.

2012 Topps Chrome Football Set Details

The 2012 Topps Chrome base set has 220 cards split evenly between veterans and first-year players. Rookie cards fall one per pack. Although slightly short-printed, individual cards aren't terribly difficult to track down. For those looking for a bigger challenge, 25 rookies have rare variations.

Refractors have been a cornerstone of Topps Chrome since it debuted. 2012 Topps Chrome Football introduces a trio of new Refractor versions: Military-Bordered (#/499), pink Breast Cancer Awareness (#/399) and hobby-exclusive Prism (1:24 packs). Besides regular Refractors, other returning versions include Black (#/299), Blue (#/199), Sepia-Tone (#/99), Gold (#/50), Red (#/25) and Superfractors (1/1). Base cards also have Printing Plates. Sepia, Superfractors and Printing Plates are all inserted only in hobby boxes.

Rookie Autographs include signatures from 45 different players. Some have on-card signatures while others use stickers. Like the base cards, Rookie Autographs have several Refractor parallels, all of which are numbered: Refractors (#/150), Camo (#/99), BCA (#/75), Prism (#/50), Black (#/25), Gold (#/10), Red (#/5) and Superfractors (1/1). Only in hobby packs, Rookie Variation Autographs also appear. A total of 25 rookies also have variation short prints as well.

Those looking for a little more variety can find them with several additional rookie autograph inserts. More than three dozen first-year stars have Rookies Autographs Patches, which are numbered to 50. Multi-signature cards come courtesy of Dual Rookie Autographs (five cards, #/30) and Triple Rookie Autographs (one card, #/15).

Die-cuts are a returning trend in the hobby. 2012 Topps Chrome Football doesn't ignore them. Red Zone Rookie Die Cut cards use Refractor borders to give 35 members of the 2012 rookie class added pop. These new inserts are inserted one per box. Parallels include Blue Refractors (#/50), Gold Refractors (#/25), Superfractors (1/1) and Refractor Autographs (1/1).

Three throwback Topps designs give today's emerging players a decidedly retro feel in 2012 Topps Chrome Football. Thirty rookies are featured on three different insert sets inspired by 1957 Topps Football (1:12 packs), 1965 Topps Football (1:12 packs) and 1984 Topps Football (1:6 packs). All three sets have Refractors parallels numbered to 99. 1957 Topps also has hobby-exclusive on-card Refractor Autographs and Refractor Autograph Patch cards (#/10). Additional 1965 Topps parallels include Red Refractors (#/75) and Prism Refractors (#/50). 1984 Topps also has a pair of additional Refractors: Gold (#/75) and Prism Die-Cut (#/50). Both 1965 Topps and 1984 Topps have autographed Refractors that are numbered to 15.

Carrying over from 2012 Topps Football, Quarterback Rookie Reprints (1:24) give rookie cards of some of the NFL's all-time greats the Chrome shine. Refractors (#/99) and rare, hobby-exclusive Autographed Refractors are also available.

Topps has created a set of 110 Blue Wave Refractors available only to those who pull an autograph redemption card. They are like a bonus because Topps had to insert more redemptions than they'd hoped. Every autograph redemption also nets collectors a four-card pack. These packs are also the only place to find Alfred Morris autographs in the product.

Product Review

2012 Topps Chrome Football Product Review

Reviewed by Christopher Wering

Good: 2012 Topps Chrome returns doing what it does best. Just like past years, the set is heavy with Refractors and rookies. Included in the mix are three new Refractor versions: Military-Bordered (#/499), pink Breast Cancer Awareness (#/399) and hobby-exclusive Prism. The rookie autograph checklist is deep and variations of 25 players can be found. The Rookie Autograph Patches, Dual Rookie Autographs and Triple Rookie Autographs are all low-numbered and make for nice high-end hits.

Bad: Not all rookies appear in their NFL uniforms. Many photos were taken at the NFL Scouting Combine and some players are shown in their 00 uniform. Some cards seem to have a dark feel to them. The borders are silver and the dark colors on many of the cards blend right in. The photographs aren't bad, but this seems to be an issue with a few of the cards. As with past Chrome releases, the cards are prone to scratches and other surface damage.

The Bottom Line: This set has the potential for some rather large hits. You would probably be better off purchasing a case since only one autograph is found in each hobby box. The draw to Topps Chrome is the Refractors. They remain very popular and Topps was smart to expand the Refractor types this year.

Staff Rating:
3.3 / 5.0

Card Design: 3.0/5.0

The card design is similar to recent Topps Chrome products, with a shiny and clean look. This isn't completely a bad thing, as many collectors prefer this style. As far as the photos go, I'm not a fan of the combined pictures or the 00 uniforms. I realize there are time restrictions for photographs, but I would like to see Topps handle this differently in the future. As I stated earlier, some of the colors appear to darken the overall feel of the cards and they are prone to scratches and other surface damage.

If you are a fan of retro cards, you will likely enjoy the older-style inserts. New faces on designs from 1957, 1965 and 1984 really stand out, especially with the shimmering look of Chrome. Pulling some of these cards made me reminisce about tearing open packs when I was a kid and hoping to pull a Marino or Elway RC.

The new Refractor designs will appeal to many. I'm not a fan of the Military-Bordered Refractors or Breast Cancer Awareness Refractors. The ideas do not seem to blend well with the designs.

Die-cut cards are becoming more popular with Topps. They are fairly sharp, though they resemble the die-cut cards found in other Topps products. Despite being colorful and attractive, I wish Topps would do something to distinguish them from those found in other products.

For such a popular product, it would be nice if there were more on-card autographs. The design and photography issues could also be addressed. With a few tweaks, Topps Chrome could be a really solid product.

Checklist: 4.0/5.0

2012 Topps Chrome Football offers a base set of 220 cards, with the first half being veterans and the second half being rookies. Twenty-five rookies have rare variations. Throw in the numerous Refractors and autograph types and you have a nice mix of cards.

The on-card signatures definitely stand out compared to those that use stickers. In the future, it would be nice if there was an even greater push to go all hard-signed.

Value: 3.0/5.0

Given the price that boxes have jumped to on the secondary market, I wouldn't be a buyer. This set is for those who enjoy chasing Refractors and variations. Pulling only one autograph is a letdown for me. It's possible to pull a significant rookie autograph, but they are tough. Collectors can expect to get their money back from the Refractors alone, but you will be disappointed if your autograph is common. It may be safer to purchase singles than to spend the money on a box.

The Fun Factor: 3.0/5.0

The Refractors definitely stand out, but pulling one autograph per hobby box is a downer. Unless you are a Refractor collector, you may be disappointed with this product. Topps Chrome will still be able to appeal to its followers who have supported them for years, but some newer collectors or autograph seekers might not get as excited.

I would much rather see Topps limit the number of Refractors and insert additional autographs. The parallels pop up frequently, so a slight reduction would make opening packs much more fun for me.

Think the Purple parallel #/499 is missing in the list of parallels. FYI.

cards had numerous defects and the price was ridiculous .250 dollars for a bunch of crap. If topps does nothing for me I will never buy a product from them again, this was not the first time I got screwed.IM a customer that needs quality and if Icant get that from topps Iwill find it elswhere.

In my first box I got for 20$ I got a 23$ Andrew luck refractor. In my second box I got a rg3 1984 card, awesome! I also love the 1957 and the 1965 cards. Defiantly 5 stars!

Fun, inexpensive, exceptional quality, great secondary market, beautiful design, great card stock, shocking parallels, and variety, variety, and did I mention variety! One of the premier products out this year! I’ve actually looked for chrome cards of a few years past just to see the change in design. I’ll be looking forward for Topps Chrome 2013!

Chrome has been a real hit for me… especially on the retail side. It would be nice if there were more autos but on the same side I think it is good to keep them toned back so that they are more rare/valuable unlike jersey cards now days that are a dime a dozen. When jersey cards first came out in the late 90s it didn’t matter whose jersey it was, if you got one it was pretty valuable. Now with the need of the Hobby to have more and more jersey cards many that you get are worth next to nothing. That is super disappointing when you actually do get one. Point being… Keep the autos tough to get… Makes it more fun and more valuable!!!

I’ve always been a fan of Topps Chrome with its shiny, simple design. I bought my 1st box of hobby and I got a dual auto of Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III, my favorite player! I know this is not typical, but what a 1st box!! If you’re a fan of refractors, like i am, then this is the product for you.

Just opened my first box of 2012 Topps Chrome Football and no AUTO! Can I complain to Topps? I thought an auto in every box is guaranteed. Any insight would help. Thanks

I Love Topps Chrome 2012. Another reminder why I prefer Topps over Panini. I can’t get enough of this product. I must point out that I’ve had almost better luck with blasters as opposed to the hobby box I purchased, either way hands down AMAZING!

Bought a pack today, I think I pulled a Demarcus Ware Prism Refrac, but not sure if it is. It says refractor on the back but the front kind of looks like those “sparkle” cards from baseball. I hope I dont sound dumb but can anyone confirm if I am correct? Thanks!!!

The bounty that blaster boxes of Topps Chrome Football yields is worth of the $20 purchase. I haven’t been disappointed yet… and the rookie relic card that comes with each blaster, out of 3 tries I’ve gotten two numbered relics.

In one blaster box I got both an RGIII refractor and an RGIII alternate version of card #200.

Such nice cards.

It’s a fun product to open. Nice looking and great overall presentation. One hit per box? That’s why I stuck with rack packs and group breaks (2 DeVier Posey pink border autos). Not a product I would buy a box for myself, though.

Simply one of the best products I’ve ever opened. Topps Chrome makes busting packs fun again. The multi-colored refractors are a thrill, while the base set is beautiful. Bust a few packs and you’ll get x-fractors, black refractors, red refractors, everything! It’s decently affordable as well. Absolutely no complaints. Well done, Topps.

Topps always seems to hit a Home Run with Chrome, they take what you love and make it better. The new style/color refractors add something new and the camo refractors are very neat. Nice mix of inserts and rookies. Only thing is if making a set would take alot of boxes to make with all parallels and inserts

Really liked this FB set this year. I primarily collect BB, but really like this FB set. This has to be my favorite FB set of the year.

I did a couple breaks of this product just to get some of these cards. I love the parallels and the autos. Even the base cards in this set are very well done and collectable.

If Topps can keep making the Chrome FB like this year after year this will be my FB set of choice going forward!

After a 20 year layoff I just started collecting cards and Topps Chrome Football is my first set I have ever indulged in! Let me tell you what incredible cards. Between the graphics, shots, and autographs, i’m in love. These cards are shiny with different unique borders and patches galore. I have a feeling an addiction is about to take place!

The reason I give this product a 4 is due to the number of cards I have pulled and I have found scratched straight from the pack. I wonder if there is a way to better protect the cards during packaging

Easily 5 stars!! Simply the chrome look is so awesome but then you add refractors, autographs, dual cards, and it goes on. I love football, and I love collecting cards. And if your gonna spend your hard earned money, you might as well get the best quality that is available. Topps Chrome is the cream of the crop

I love everything about this product. I decided several years ago that I was only going to collect baseball cards because there are so many different kinds of cards and it is impossible to collect them all. After seeing this product, I was hooked. i will be collecting the topps chrome for years to come!

Best product on the market. Really the only one I wait for each year and so far I’ve pick up 2 hobby boxes and 5 retail.

My critique: The product is great and I could go on about its merits, so I’ll try to be constructively critical. The retail boxes are fantastic…..so fantastic that, with the exception of autographs, I’ve had as good of pulls from the retail as the hobby boxes. In fact, with the exception of the sepias, I’ve actually had better luck pulling parallels from the retail.

Also, I would like to see either a second auto to separate the hobby boxes from their fantastic retail countreparts. Either that or at least make every rookie auto a parallel. Nothing crummier than paying the $30+ difference for a hobby box and pulling a 3rd round DT on a regular card.

Billy Whitaker

I love this product, hobby or retail i have yet to be disappointed. I would like to see the inclusion of a 2nd autograph in hobby boxes but the extreme number parallels make up for the lack of a second auto.

Tons of value in this product thanks to all the refractors. While Topps said they did their best to get most of their signatures on-card, it seems that there are still too many sticker autographs. Since Topps is giving away blue wave refractors with redemptions it is now cool to get a redemption card and you’re no longer disappointed. The idea to fuse old school card designs with modern chrome technology is genius. All the cards in this set look great. Definitely one of the best football products of the year.

brad

this product was really nice. loved the color per box ratio and the autos, while theres always lower end guys in most boxes, the color autos and big hit potential is still there. the camo cards in this product looks so much better than the flagship topps fb that had camos as well. the redemptions are a hassle, but whats new, but i do appreciate the extra blue wave pack they will be giving with the redemption.

I have yet to be disappointed in this product. Since my 1st pack my eyes loved it, the smooth feel and the beautiful autographs. With the use of throwback style it brings me back to my youth when i collected! Oh to be young again, and chrome does that for me.

Jim Gater

The cards are beautiful. It is a lot of fun getting the different color refractors as well. I am disappointed with the one autograph per box. I bought two boxes and BOTH of my autographs were of Travis Benjamin. This is ridiculous and really upsetting. Maybe it is just dumb luck or maybe the cards aren’t mixed up well enough. Either way, it really stinks when you throw down good money to get jobbed like that. I will admit, those throwback cards are awesome looking!

Excellent product. Only thing that would make this product incredible would be to add an extra autograph. 1 per box just insn’t good enough.

Being a Chromie since the inaugural of ’96 what is there not to love about a simple product like Topps Chrome??!! 2012 is its best effort so far adding even more refractors to chase!

Simeon

Topps Chrome Football is always a product which people wait for every year. This year’s edition has had much anticipation with such a stacked rookie class with the likes of Doug Martin, Robert Griffin III, Andrew Luck, and more!

This is a mid end product that includes 1 auto per box. Don’t be disappointed by 1 auto though, because these boxes can sometimes unload a plethora of colored parallels.

At an MSRP of $80-$100, I suggest you grab as much as you can now. It’s almost a guarantee that these prices will go up in the coming months.

Also, if you’re budget can’t handle a hobby box, then don’t worry. I bought a rack pack at a Walmart recently and not only did it come with 3 guaranteed orange refractors, but it also wielded a purple refractor /499, a black refractor /299 and a die-cut refractor.

Enjoy!

I really loved opening my first pack today of Chrome. I got few RCs and one diecut. I also got one that said certified auto but no auto…Still love the look of the cards!!!

Really enjoy the Chrome products especially football. I would like to see more non-rookies involved in signings and relics. In line with relics would be some connected to specific games.

I just recently started collecting again and I have been blown away by the product thus far.

Overall Topps Chrome 2012 has been a wonderful set to help restart my collection. The xards themselves look amazing and there are tons of parallels to chase after. I especially like the 1984 and 1957 throwbacks.

I got a card (1965) which states that all autographs are signed under a Topps authority witness, but there is no autograph on it. I rate it a 5 for it still is a nice product, at least to me.

I lower this product only because of the quality of it .The last few years the retail product has had numerous scratches on the surface of the cards like they aren’t careful how they print them…
