What's old is new again with 2012 Topps Archives, a set that's sure to churn the nostalgia inside a lot of collectors. The base set puts today's stars on cards based on 1954, 1971, 1980 and 1984 Topps Baseball sets. Inserts also reach back in time, paying tribute to such memorable releases as 1968 Topps 3D, 1969 Topps Deckle Edge and 1977 Topps Cloth. In 2001 and 2002, Topps produced sets called Topps Archives that used classic designs and new photos to re-imagine cards of baseball's greats. One of the biggest draws of the set are Fan Favorites Autographs. Inserted two per hobby box,  they feature on-card signatures of many of baseball's most beloved players, not all of whom were stats legends. By putting the spotlight on players people admired, the brand gained a faithful following among player and team collectors. Sticking with the historical theme, collectors can also find buybacks, autographed buybacks and prize redemptions for items from the Topps vault.

Product Review

2012 Topps Archives Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Chuck Vanderbilt

Good: Replacing 2011 Topps Lineage, 2012 Topps Archives is a great product for set builders, insert lovers and collectors over the age of 30 looking for a trip down memory lane.

Bad: 2012 Topps Archives is not a product for hit seekers. As long as collectors keep their expectations reasonable there isn't much room for complaint.

The Bottom Line: This is an exceptional product for collectors who like to build sets with clearly defined base cards, short prints and inserts. The product includes current players, Hall of Famers, and other retired favorites.

Staff Rating:
4.5 / 5.0

Card Design: 5.0/5.0

2012 Topps Archives Baseball includes card designs from 1954, 1971, 1980, and 1984. This covers a wide range of time for collectors. The years also feel a little random. Perhaps a way the set could be improved in future releases would be to include a design from each decade: the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Collectors should know that all the cards, no matter which design, have the modern feel to them thanks to current card stock. Don't expect to see a card in the 1954 design and feel the rough grain of cardboard like you would out of a Topps Heritage set.

Inserts in 2012 Topps Archives include stickers, 3D cards, cloth cards, Gold Stamp reprints, and Deckle Edge cards, all of which are designed well. However, the Deckle Edge cards stand out more than the others with a black and white photo and a blue ink facsimile autograph.

Checklist: 4.0/5.0

This set does a good job of mixing in different levels of players. There are those that have their names in Cooperstown, those that are current all-stars, and those who were childhood favorites to many collectors. While 2012 Topps Archives includes autographs from the likes of Hank Aaron and Willie Mays, that's not what the set is really focused on. Collectors should expect names like Vida Blue and Jim Abbot to be their autograph hits.

Value: 4.0/5.0

Hobby boxes offer collectors two on-card autographs with a chance at a bonus relic card. Roughly priced at about $65 per 24-pack box, 2012 Topps Archives Baseball has a lot of value in it, though some of that is found in the memories the set conjures up.

The Fun Factor: 5.0/5.0

2012 Topps Archives Baseball is an enjoyable rip for a wide range of collectors. The inclusion of legends and stars of yesterday and today using card designs from the hobby's past will surely have you reminiscing about your collecting past.

Ryan is a former member of The Cardboard Connection Writing Staff.   His collecting origins began with winter bike rides to the corner store, tossing a couple of quarters onto the counter and peddling home with a couple packs of O-Pee-Chee hockey in his pocket. Today, he continues to build sets, go after inserts with cool technologies, chase Montreal Expos and finish off his John Jaha master collection.

Opened a pack yesterday, enjoyed my finds. I did get a Duke Snider reprint and Nolan Ryan base card so that made my day. I have the worst luck at getting any pulls so this kind of set (few inserts and pulls) is right up my way with the various designs throughout the years. Fun!

I like the old 80’s designs in a glossy better stock. I think the auto’s in this set are my favorite for this year.

4 stars… being someone who started buying cards in 68, I just love the 3-D,the deckle edge black and white and 68,69 borders.
It takes me right back to the day i opened a nickle pack and there while smelling the gum..Dick Mccauliffe with the home jersey in the cool batting stance..yes a tiger fan. I’ll never forget that moment.
I can still feel the heat from the sun and the high 5’s from my friends when they saw it.
topps brings back those days with this set. it’s now the borders more then the players on the cards.
that is the best part of this set. the crummt part is the price.
Why dont you do just one set where kids can afford a pack and be blown away with a bryce harper card..or who ever the favorite is? wiht all the big bucks you make, you could make a set with all the fun of the late 60’s with prices that match. Limit how many the dealers can buy and you could make a memory that can last 45 years like it does for me over a common star card. give the kids cheaper memories. thats about it. come Topps…you can do it

Had some tough luck with the autos I pulled in my boxes, but I loved this product. Strong candidate for baseball set of the year.

Love it bought 4 box’s and got harper redemption ken grifry Jr redemption and got 83- mini tony gw ynn number to 24 great

Good: The 200 card base set is broken up into four 50-card ‘mini-sets,’ each with a different Topps design from the past. Cards 201-240 are SP’s that fall 1:4, making a complete set more challenging. Card #241 (Bryce Harper) is a very rare SSP, so having the chance to pull one of those from your box is a nice added bonus. The throwback feel of the inserts is very nice. Fan Favorites autographs have a handful of players that you don’t often see. All of the autographs are on-card. Who doesn’t love that?

Bad: For a box that runs about $80-$90, the value isn’t really there. It’s nice that you get two autographs per box, but most are of lesser names. It’s tough to find the value in Archives. There also aren’t a lot of rookies in this release. Looking over the checklist, there’s only six rookie cards in the entire set plus the tough Harper SSP.

The Bottom Line: 2012 Topps Archives is a fun product to open. If you’re looking to make your money back it might not be for you. However, from a fun standpoint, having all of the different eras put into one set makes this a fun product to open. As mentioned earlier, having an autograph checklist that is all on-card should make everyone appreciate this product.

Card Design: 5.0/5.0
Any base set that throws together four different generations of Topps baseball cards gets an A+ in my book. You don’t have that redundant feeling where everything looks the same. The old-school look and feel of the cloth inserts, stickers and 3D cards is awesome.

Checklist: 4.5/5.0
Topps Archives has a 241-card checklist that includes current superstars to middle-of-the-road fan favorites to retired legends. Having the set under 250 cards makes it a product that you won’t break your back trying to complete, even with the short prints.

Value: 3.0/5.0
While Topps Archives offers two on-card autographs per box, for the most part the autograph checklist doesn’t jump out at you. There are a few superstars on there, but most of the checklist is made up of guys without a ton of hobby value. Even though fans will be thrilled to see certified autographs of some of their favorite players from years past, guys like Bake McBride, Jose Oquendo and Shawon Dunston they don’t have the same pull in the hobby that other players do.

The Fun Factor: 4.5/5.0
The fun factor is pretty high in Topps Archives. From the sets-within-a-set base cards to the throwback feel and look of the inserts, Archives is a product both new and old collectors can enjoy. Plus, when you get a product that has certified autographs of players that don’t sign for a lot of sets, that should get collectors excited.

Just a diverse, fun product to open with big upside. I’ve ripped two cases, and I’m impressed.

Great product! Cool designs, nice vintage look to the cards. The only drawback is the inserts are not really that great. The auto’s are obviously very hard to find not even sure if they are available in retail packs. My local card shop does not even carry this product.
