Product Review

2012 Topps Allen & Ginter Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Paul Lesko

Good: With a ridiculous autograph checklist featuring many desired baseball players (Yu Darvish, Mike Trout, etc.), other athletes (Roger Federer, Arnold Palmer, etc.) and pop culture icons (Kate Upton, Erin Andrews, etc.), it's a very intriguing product. Plus the hand-drawn art and vintage designs are nice.

Bad: Like all Allen & Ginter products, it's, well, odd. Personally, I could care less about many of the insert cards and the Murder in Willow Cove contest.

The Bottom Line: If you want baseball and only baseball, this is not your product. But if you like variety, it's an odd but fun product.

Staff Rating:
4.2 / 5.0

Card Design: 4.2/5.0

Allen and Ginter is known for its art, and this set does not disappoint. Great sketches and a good vintage design lead to a very collectible base set. The autographs and relics have a classic framed design as well, but since the framed border is black, they clash somewhat with the overall set design. Regardless, they're good-looking cards.

The set spends a little too much time with inserts that strange inserts that could have limited appeal among big-time baseball fans. Historical turning point cards? Giants of the deep? Tallest building cards? Seriously, if I wanted history, biology or architectural lessons, I'd watch the PBS. When I break a box of baseball cards, I like to find baseball cards.

And while I recognize the prize for breaking the code (a special, complete set of the autographs) is intriguing, I have no interest in attempting to "break the code."

Checklist: 4.6/5.0

What's bad about the checklist is what attracts most people to the set: It's confounding in size, and content. Lepidoptery cards? DNA card relics? Wait, so if you get these cards, and science continues to advance, years down the road you can create a clone of Kennedy from them?

Focusing on the typical cards, the checklists are stacked. The base set includes lots of current stars and legends. The autograph and relic checklists are also phenomenal with both the baseball and non-baseball lineups.

Value: 4.0/5.0

If you're into oddities, this is a great set. Its variety is unmatched.

The autographs are hot items on eBay, even outselling 2012 Tier One autos, which have a comparably smaller circulation. However, although there are three hits per hobby box, there is no guarantee that any will be autographs.

The Fun Factor: #/5.0

This is an odd product, but the oddities make the break fun, even when you get some of the cards that are going immediately into the discard pile (like I did with some of the non-baseball inserts). Also, the chance for pulling some amazing autographs and relics will keep people coming back for more.

I really like this years Allen & Ginter the cards look great you its a great price for a box considering how you have a chance at a rip card that pays for more than how much you paid for the box alone.

Well as I said in an early posting, I just got back into baseball cards after 20 years. Yesterday I purchased 4 packs of the Allen & Ginter series. Let me tell you that I am not impressed. For the money I dont see what the desire is for these cards. The cards look cheap and apparently are trying to recreate that vintage look with current and old players. To me if your searching for historic players and cards, but an old set because the look doesnt achieve what I think they are going after. Fun factor is 0.

This set has a great price point, but I would still ike to see more autos and less relics

I really like the different entertainment figures included in this product. Also I feel that this product is extremely educational in many areas. The Box Topper extra makes you feel like you’re getting a special prize which is nice. Maybe a guaranteed auto would be cool because that seems to be the main insert people want to obtain. Overall I would recommend this product to people and have recommended this product to people in the past.

This year’s set certainly has the best design since the 2006 set, but i was still left a tiny bit dissapointed. I feel as if the non-baseball player auto checklist was much weaker than in years past. In addition, the baseball player auto checklist also seemed weaker than in past years. Still, the set is beautifully designed and overall a fun rip.

This is one of those sets that most people will either love or hate. Autograph cards are rare and are not guaranteed per hobby box. Some people will hate all the non-baseball inserts. But overall this is a large set featuring a great base card design and high quality relic cards. If you’re into big hits, then there are always rip cards, DNA cards, and cut autographs to chase too.

This is Topps’ annual over-priced, over-hyped and over-produced product. The pickins are beyond slim and if you weren’t convinced of this 7 years ago you’re a sucker. The only way to make the product better is to not buy it and kill its popularity. Then maybe Topps will step it up They can’t even promise an auto per box at that price!

I would like to comend you on a great product, the cards are fantastic . the only concern I have is the amount of cards , as a collector I have a lot of sets . But i”m on a limited budget I just can’t afford the whole set. Is it a possibility that topps could help me out with that? Its those mini cards THANKS ED

This was the 1st yr. I purchased this. And it was just a couple blaster boxes. Glad that’s where I stopped. As you said above if you don’t care about all that other stuff it’s not for you. I thought the baseball part was pretty decent though. Although I did get caught up in the hype wanting to get some of those autos. Which I tried for mostly on Break sites. I did 4-5 and never saw anything good pulled. But that phase has passed and I can’t say as though I miss AG. But I’m glad I checked it out

Good: Topps delivers an outstanding release with 2012 Allen & Ginter. The cards are sharp, clean, and have a nostalgic design. The autographs are the standout, with plenty of hype surrounding Bryce Harper, Mike Trout, and Yu Darvish. This product delivers an excellent mix of current players and rookies. Similar to past releases, collectors can expect to find lots of inserts in each box.

Bad: There are not many bad things about this product, except for the inclusion of the non-sport element. Collectors can view as either a gift or a curse. The downside of the Allen & Ginter product is that some collectors may pull cards of the many different non-baseball players and lose interest in the rest of what the product can offer. The randomness of some of the autographs and relics may leave some collectors wary.

The Bottom Line: Topps Allen & Ginter portrays itself as an affordable high-end product. This product stands out amongst other Topps releases simply because of the magnificent artwork. The autographs and game-used designs make this product very desirable to collect. Its nostalgic look, coupled by its multifaceted inserts make this product a magnet for collectors young and old.

Staff Rating: 4.6/5.0

Card Design: 4.5/5.0
The base cards are always a standout. The painted-style portraits continue to be a pleasant sight. Again, the inserts continue to be eye-catching as well. The many autographs and game-used cards continue to standout with a crisp design. While the random inserts might shy away some baseball card collectors, it’s also part of the appeal for many.

Checklist: 4.7/5.0
The checklist is large. There are so many different aspects to this brand that it might seem overwhelming to some collectors and exciting for others. The base set is numbered 1-300 with short-prints advancing the set to 350 cards. It mixed legends, veterans and rookies, with Harper and Darvish leading the pack in popularity.

Value: 4.2/5.0
The assortment within this set is unparalleled. The base set has the right mix of stars and rookies in addition to the various non-baseball aspects available to collect. The autographs are a huge deal amongst sellers and collectors. Many are outselling similar cards from other 2012 products. The array of rookie and veteran autographs and historic relics will keep collectors on the hunt.

The Fun Factor: 5.0/5.0
This is a great product for the curious collectors within the hobby. The ability to reach beyond the average baseball card collector and entice non-baseball collectors is genius. Topps continues to deliver with Allen & Ginter.

Unlike the couple of reviews at the outset, I think is a high risk product vis-a-vis getting anything good. The autograph card was a nobody the the other 2 were jerseys which I find valueless. If this was just the first year of getting junk, I would not be writing. But this is year #6 of buying a box and wondering why. I have never liked the statistical data or the lack of listing a position but that part is personal. I will warn buyers though of this year’s other experience. While awaiting the arrival of my box I bought a $19.99 box at Target. With the exception of a black border mini, EVERY card, including the other minis was in the hobby box as well. Every frickin’ one. Teaches me something. Don’t know what since I’m done with the A& G hobby boxes.

Great risk and reward. Pulled a Roger Fededer auto, Bob Knight 3 color relic, and Paul O’Neil relic.

I always buy a bit of Allen and Ginter every year, but this years is absolutely the best. The mini sets are amazing; People of the Bible, Historical Turning Points, and Man’s Best Friend are the cool sets that are non-sports. I bought a couple of retail blaster boxes and pulled a Michael Phelps materials mini framed in a black frame…beautiful card.
This years Allen and Ginter is four stars.

excitement in every pack–a huge Auto checklist with sport, non-sport stars, wacky inclusions—way too much fun to not give ginter a 5. Cant wait to see what the mini SSPs are this year!! LOVE LOVE Ginter!!!

Always a huge fan of the Ginter, but too big of a risk-reward type box to get 5 stars from me.
