2012 Panini Prime Signatures Football Cards 7

Product Review

2012 Panini Prime Signatures Football Product Review

Reviewed By Mike Smeth

Good: Very affordable box price, Premium feel, Sleek and polished design

Bad: Only 1 hit per box, Too many rookie scrubs on checklist, Inclusion of veteran and Hall of Famer autographs is extremely limited

The Bottom Line: Pound for pound 2012 Panini Prime Signatures Football is one of the best football card products of the year. It's a hit-centric product that is as affordable as it is enjoyable. From the base set to the various autograph subsets, the design gives it the feel of a product far beyond its $60 per box asking price.

Staff Rating:
4.5 / 5.0

Card Design: 4.9/5.0

2012 Prime Signatures Football features a very classy, polished and minimalistic design that flat out looks great. One of the biggest issues I've had with Panini's football card products over the past several years is that they, with some exceptions, have looked pretty bad. It really looks like Panini has upped their game this year. Nowhere is this more evident then in 2012 Prime Signatures Football. I'm typically not interested in base cards, but the base set looks so good I couldn't help but get excited about them.

Checklist: 4.0/5.0

Prime Signatures is a rookie driven product, and considering the strength of the 2012 NFL Rookie Class, this definitely works in it's favor. Overall the rookie checklist is watered down with it's fair share of rookie scrubs, but not to the same degree present in some of Panini's other football offerings. NFL Veterans and Hall of Famers add additional depth to the checklist, most notably in the form of the Greatest Combo Signatures, Greatest Triple Signatures and Greatest Quad Signatures autograph subsets. However the print run of cards in each of these sets is so low, that they are more a chase element of the set then a legitimate component of it's foundation.

Value: 4.6/5.0

2012 Prime Signatures Football is a very well executed product. Panini was able to put together a compelling, autograph hit driven product that retails for under $65 a box. The best part is that the quality of the product didn't take a hit in the process. Instead, Panini cut the fat in the form of adding unnecessary 1 color game used jersey card "hits" to the product. They also included less cards per box then the majority of similarly structured products, but a few less base cards per box is worth the cheaper price tag

The Fun Factor: 4.4/5.0

If you like hit-centric football card products, 2012 Panini Prime Signatures Football most certainly needs to be on your radar. It's a lot of fun to break and offers a legitimately good chance of pulling big autograph hits. And at $65 per box it won't leave too big a dent it your wallet.

Getting to the heart of the chase for many collectors, 2012 Panini Prime Signatures Football comes with an autograph in every four-card pack. With a focus of rookies, multi-signed cards and autographed memorabilia cards, the brand is looking to build further off of the 2011 set.

With so much of the pack's potential value coming from a single card, some collectors may be hesitant to give 2012 Panini Prime Signatures Football a try. However, this model is a proven winner in the hobby. So many collectors today like to cut right to the hits. And that's exactly what Panini aims to offer.

Like every 2012 football product, the stacked rookie class is one of the set's main draws. Andrew Luck and company have autographed rookie cards that are numbered to 199 or less. Both Combo Rookie Signatures and Triple Rookie Signatures are numbered to 99 or less and have multiple autographs.

The first-year content continues with Rookie Prime Materials and Rookie Extreme Prime Materials Jumbo. Rookie Prime Materials, numbered to 99 or less, combine on-card signatures and event-worn jersey swatches. The Extreme versions, also numbered to 99 or less, come with over-sized patch and prime swatches from event-worn jerseys. NFL Shield parallels are one-of-ones.

2012 Panini Prime Signatures Football isn't all about rookies though. The set has current veterans and retired stars as well. Greatest Combos Signatures come with two autographs. Numbered to 10 or less, they're difficult pulls. One of Panini's signature inserts that crosses several sports, the 18-card Pen Pals set comes with up to eight autographs per card.

Product Configuration: four cards per pack
Price Point: Mid-End Football Card
Target Audience: Autograph Collectors, Memorabilia Card Collectors, Hit Seekers

Picked up a box for $40. Product looks great and I pulled a Peyton Manning Gold auto #10/18!

Surprise, Surprise! Mrs. Toshi picked up a 2012 Prime Signatures at Walmart! Yes, this is not a typo. A hobby box at Walmart. Stranger things have happen.

I have seen, read, and viewed this product on several occasions. For some reason, I have overlooked this product in favor of ’12 Limited and ’12 Prominence. I am pleased to report that I am pleasantly surprise with Mrs. Toshi’s purchase.

It is a extremely attractive product. That’s just the way that the box is presented and opens. So when the pack was lifted from the box, just the weight alone told me of the nature of the card stock. The stock was of such a excellent and a very high quality stock, it took away from the realization that all four corners were made of titanium. Well, this might be a slight execration, for whatever panini utilized in producing a card that had no nicks for it’s thickness is a revolution for the card industry in itself. I have read horror stories in damaged cards that have thick stock.

The first cards that were base was well made and had a minimalist presentation. The hit, a dual auto was somewhat of a surprise as it was well laid out in an offset pattern. This is definitely a “Prime” product.

First, the product description is not accurate, in that not all rookies have on card sigs, unless my rookies are card signed with a sticker over them.

With that said, these cards look fantastic. The 96 point card stock feels great, and the all white cards really make the player photos pop, and look really classy.

I bought two boxes (packs) because of a good deal online. I didn’t get any cards I wanted, but got some excellent trade bait. My first pack had two base cards, a Red Parallel, and an auto redemption. My next pack had a real surprise (I don’t know how rare this is)… I pulled two base cards, a Red Parallel, a rookie signature, and a completely unexpected 5th card, a Gold Parallel rookie signature!

Most people say that for the money, you should get more than one hit per box. Keep in mind that with many other lines, a single pack contains 4-5 cards with only one guaranteed pull per pack, and are at a similar retail price point (2012 Absolute Football comes to mind). Prime Signatures however comes with a guaranteed auto, and a parallel in every pack. That’s two hits in my book!

Overall, for the price, hits, good overall lineup and excellent looks, this years set is a winner in my opinion!

the one positive is it has retired players and HOF players which makes it worth the risk….and if i was going to try to complete a set ,this would be in my top 5….variety..quality and all numbered….its prob best to buy a case at a time..since the price rarely will go up!

Too many unknowns and with only one hit a box it can be risky. The ones who hit with the RGIII”s or Luck will undoubtedly think that it is the best on the street but overall it can be a little too risky.

I love this set. Besides the excellent quality, the design of the cards is scimitar perfect. Now, if only the town I live in would sell them.

I paid $50 for a box at my LCS. Pulled a triple auto of Andrew Luck, RG3 and Trent Richardson (on card autos). Obviously Im biased but for $50 I think its one of the better gambles out there.

I like the design on some of the cards, but not at all on others. Is it just me or does this set look a lot like half a dozen other sets already on the market? $64 for one hit per box isn’t bad if people are interested in building a set. I’m not sure that’s the case, though.

I like the design of the overall product but I don’t like the one hit per box. Its a huge risk. Tried it last year and my one hit was a redemption. And not only a redemption..a redemption of Jerrel Jernigan.

I think this years Prime Sigs looks even better than last year! Love the prime jersey autos this year and of course I ALWAYS love on-card autos!
