Product Details
2012 Panini Prizm Baseball brings the popular brand to the diamond for the first time. Similar to basketball and football, the focus is largely on the chromium look and feel, not to mention the Refractor-like Prizm parallels.
The 2012 Panini Prizm Baseball base set has 200 cards. The first 120 cards are current stars. They're followed by 30 retired stars that vary from Hall of Famers and future Cooperstown indutees like Cal Ripken and Ken Griffey Jr. to such collector favorites as Will Clark, Pete Rose and Fernando Valenzuela. Bryce Harper, Yoenis Cespedes, Yu Darvish and 47 other 2012 rookie standouts round out the checklist.
Prizm parallels, which have a familiar rainbow-like background, come in several versions. Basic Prizms fall three per hobby box. Gold Prizms numbered to 10 and one-of-one Finite Black Prizms are also exclusive to hobby packs. Retail boxes are the only place to find Green Prizms. In addition to these, Target packs have a Red Prizm parallel and Walmart has Blue Prizms.
2012 Panini Prizm Baseball hobby boxes also have a pair of autographs. Signers include Ripken, Griffey, Reggie Jackson and R.A. Dickey. A separate Rookie Autographs set includes Brett Lawrie and Matt Moore. Both autograph sets have Prizm parallels that are numbered to 25.
Elite Extra Edition inserts, which fall one per box, include some of baseball's top prospects who have yet to get a taste of MLB action. Carlos Correa and Byron Buxton are among the ten players in the set. Cards also have Prizm, Gold Prizm and Green Prizm parallels. Elite Extra Edition Autographs (#/200) are only available in hobby packs. The checklist balloons to 25 cards and is led by Mike Zunino. Prizms parallels are numbered to 25.
USA Baseball (ten cards) captures some of the game's top stars who have donned the stars and stripes. Falling one per hobby box, players include Bryce Harper and Derek Jeter. Parallels include Prizms, Green Prizms and Gold Prizms (#/10). Mike Trout, Buster Posey and Justin Verlander are among the players with USA Baseball Autographs (#/25).
Other inserts in 2012 Panini Prizm Baseball include Brilliance (ten cards, 1:20 hobby packs), Dominance (ten cards, 1:10 obby packs), Rookie Relevance (12 cards, 1:20 hobby packs), Team MVP (30 cards, 1:10 hobby packs) and Top Prospects (eight cards, 1:20 packs). Each has Prizm, Green Prizm and Gold Prizm (#/10) parallels.
Between Prizms, autographs and other inserts, nearly every 2012 Panini Prizm Baseball hobby pack should have an insert.
Product Configuration: Hobby -- 20 packs per box, 6 cards per pack, Retail -- 24 packs per box, 4 cards per pack

This set is gorgeous. The cards have that chrome look and feel, but without any of the curling issues that plague most kinds of chrome-ish products. The base cards immediately impress, while the inserts carry the same look and feel. The inserts aren’t rare, at the rate of around one per pack or fewer, but I find it relieving that I wasn’t bombarded with useless–and worthless–subsets at the rate that you find in Topps products. I did receive a redemption card (Grrrr), but I also hit a Strasburg USA auto Prizm #/25, so it made up for that, plus out of the two boxes I opened, it appears I have near set completion on the base set. The prizms are interesting because there’s only three per box, and though I didn’t pull any big name prizms, other than the Strasburg auto, it leaves me feeling like I won anyway, considering the rarity 3 in 20 packs. The refracted colors absolutely LEAP off the cards, making them exceedingly obvious as prizms. Of the insert sets, my favorite, and the most unique of all of them–actually the only ones that are sufficiently different, were the Elite Extra Edition. One per box, so more rare than an auto, and striking in the way they stand out. I pulled a Carlos Correa as one of mine, and I couldn’t be happier. Thus set is great, and between the inserts and the base set, which includes many retired and hall of fame players as well as a nice rookie assortment and current players, it’s almost a hit without the autos. I’ll be buying at least one more box, I’m sure, and is recommend it to anyone who wants a refreshing break from the usual Topps products.
