Despite some legal issues surrounding 2011 Leaf Best of Baseball (that were later settled amicably), the set was a hit with collectors. 2012 Leaf Best of Baseball sees the return of slabbed buybacks but with a slightly different configuration. Every single-pack box still comes with a buyback. Last year, boxes also came with cut signatures. These have been replaced with either an exclusive autograph or sketch card.
Buybacks in 2012 Leaf Best of Baseball are either professionally graded or come in a third-party authentication slab. Options range from vintage players like Ty Cobb, Mickey Mantle and Roberto Clemente all the way up to recent releases featuring Bryce Harper and Yu Darvish. Rookie cards continue to be a major focus of the buybacks, which Leaf has purchased off the secondary market. Vintage packs and boxes are also randomly inserted in the product. Choice vintage hits include a PSA 5 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle and T206 Ty Cobb PSA 6. Modern cards are highlighted by a 1993 SP Derek Jeter rookie BGS 9.5, 1994 SP Alex Rodriguez rookie card BGS 9.5, and a 2011 Bowman Chrome Red Refractor Autograph BGS 9. Even a 2012 Bowman Chrome Gold Refractor Yu Darvish BGS 9.5 made it into the product.
2012 Leaf Best of Baseball autographs come with a new design. Confirmed signers include Ichiro, Pete Rose, Lou Brock, Witey Ford and Jim Bunning.
Sketch cards feature original artwork from Kevin-John. Each is different and subjects include some of the most iconic players in baseball history.
