Yu Darvish Signed Baseball Redemption Set Checklist
Product Details
2012 Bowman Sterling Baseball closes out the season of Topps diamond releases. Focusing solely on the game's youngsters, every box comes with a massive amount of ink: 18 autograph cards spread across just six packs.
Both the 2012 Bowman Sterling Baseball base set and Prospect set have just 50 cards each. Putting them together should prove challenging given the high price tag and lack of base cards in packs. The base set consists entirely of 2012 rookies. Packs have either one base card or one Prospect card. Both have six different parallels: Refractors (#/199), Gold Refractors (#/50), Black Refractors (#/25), Purple Refractor (#/10), Red Refractors (1/1), and Canary Diamond Refractors (1/1).
Every four-card 2012 Bowman Sterling Baseball pack has three autograph cards. The 15 signers on the Rookie Autographs checklist are led by Bryce Harper, Yu Darvish and Mike Trout. Although Trout's rookie cards can be found in 2011 products, his signature has quickly become on the most coveted in the hobby. Other Rookie Autograph signers include Matt Moore, Jesus Montero, Will Middlebrooks and Yoenis Cespedes.
2012 Bowman Sterling Baseball Prospect Autographs have a much larger checklist, reaching 60 signers. Mike Zunino, the third overall pick in the 2012 MLB Draft, is one of them. Other 2012 first round picks include David Dahl and Brian Johnson. Nick Castellanos, Billy Hamilton and Rymer Liriano are among the other up-and-coming stars on the list.
Both the Rookie Autographs and Prospect Autographs have the same six levels of Refractor parallels as the base cards.
The autographs continue with several other insert sets. Ten Dual Autographs pair up autographs. Each is numbered to 99 or less and has six different parallels numbered to 50 or less.
Next in Line is a second dual autograph set but they come with a bit of a twist. After asking for suggestions, the concept was suggested by a collector. The two autographs on the cards match a 2012 rookie with a prospect from the same organization. The set has five cards, each numbered to 5.
Nickname Autographs (#/15) come inscribed with the featured signer's alternate monicker. Sterling Showcase Autographs include both rookies and prospects. Each card is numbered to 25 and comes with a frame made of sterling silver. One-of-one Sterling Cards are made entirely of the metal.
The cross-brand Bowman Black line expands by another 25 cards, each of which is numbered to 25. The cards use a striking black backdrop to make the silver signatures pop.
Twenty-five redemption cards are inserted in 2012 Bowman Sterling Baseball good for an autographed Yu Darvish baseball.
Topps has allocated some of the product for distribution in Japan. These boxes have exclusive Japan-fractors. Japan-fractor Prospects are numbered to 25. Japan-Fractor Prospect Autographs are limited to 5 numbered copies.
2012 Bowman Sterling Baseball is the second set to include Bowman Prospect Challenge cards. Collectors can use their prospecting knowledge to compete for autographs and exclusive cards.

Product Review
2012 Bowman Sterling Baseball Product Review
Reviewed by Paul Lesko
Good: Three autographs per pack for a total 18 autographs per hobby box, the vast majority of them on-card, how could you not be happy with that? Also, an improved design over last year's set.
Bad: Pricey, a lot of the prospects are unknowns.
The Bottom Line: 2012 Bowman Sterling Baseball is a great product. That said, because of the cost, it might be best to pick off the autographs you want from the secondary market.
Card Design: 4.8/5.0
Bowman Sterling focuses on prospect and rookie autographs. The checklist contains 68 prospect and 20 rookie base autos, not to mention chances of pulling Refractor autographs, dual and triple autographs and Bowman Black autographs.
2012 Bowman Sterling Baseball has numerous improvements over the 2011 product. The 2011 product netted 13 autographs, which is still a good number for a hobby box, and seven relics (although most were of vague origin with the typical disclaimers on the back of the card). This year's product dropped the seven relics and increased the number of signature cards to 18.
That's a win.
Not only is there more ink, but they're, for the most part, on-card. Because Sterling is an auto-centric product, the pictures of the players are minimized. This backfired with 2011 because not only were the players' pictures small, so were the autograph stickers. This left a lot of dead space on the cards. In this year's product, however, Topps hits the sweet spot. With on-card signatures, the players maximized their auto size, making for some beautiful cards.
Also, the player pictures this year are not framed by an oval or other shape, which gives the cards a less claustrophobic look than 2011. The card stock is also thick, giving the cards a great feel.
It's a great design and a huge improvement over last year's.
Checklist: 4.4/5.0
The biggest risk with 2012 Bowman Sterling Baseball is that it is driven by prospects and rookies from a draft class that does not have the star power of prior draft classes (cough, Strasburg, cough, Harper). When I tore through my box, my first thought for nearly every of the 18 autos was, "Who is this guy?"
This is reflected in the secondary market for 2012 Sterling cards where a lot of deals can be had by buying cards individually.
Sure, there are some great potential pulls in the product for prospects (Billy Hamilton, Bubba Starling, Gerrit Cole) and rookies (Trout, Harper and Darvish), and you are guaranteed to pull some great low-numbered Refractors, but when you are pulling 18 autos, and 70 of the 88 potential pulls are unknowns, you're going to get a lot of, "Who?" out of each box.
Value: 4.2/5.0
A box of 2012 Bowman Sterling Baseball is pricey, but you get 18 autographs, which is ridiculously good. Although Sterling autos do not have the demand or resale value of their Chrome counterparts, the rate of return on autographs per box is staggering enough to give each box good value.
Given the size of the checklist and number of unknowns in the product, this could be one of those sets that increases in value in the future. With such a large prospect and rookie class represented, odds are a future star is in here. So, it might be worthwhile to buy and sit on a box.
Now, if you don’t have the money to buy a box, this is a great product to poach autos from eBay. Most base autographs can be had for between $5 and $20, with most at the lower end of the spectrum. If there are only a few autographs that you want, the secondary market is where you should go. But sure, if you like the chance of pulling a low-numbered Refractor autograph of Billy Hamilton, a box is the way to go.
The Fun Factor: 4.8/5.0
When it comes to pulling autographs, I'm a kid, and any product that maximizes the ink is very fun. Sure, I didn't recognize most of who I pulled, but getting to drown in the sheer numbers of autographs was really enjoyable.
Plus, who knows what the future holds for these players?
