2012 Bowman Platinum Baseball Cards

Product Details

User Rating:

2012 Bowman Platinum Baseball lets the prospects shine—literally. As collectors have come to expect with the Bowman brand, much of the focus is placed on up-and-coming prospects.

Every box comes with two Refractor autographs and one autographed Refractor relic from baseball's rising stars. Not surprisingly, Refractor parallels are a big part of the chase, with multiple levels bolstering the base, autograph and autographed relic checklists. 2012 Bowman Platinum Baseball has several new angles including die-cut Cutting Edge inserts.

The set's biggest hits center around Arizona Fall League All-Star memorabilia. A total of 52 redemptions are good for full pieces of game-used memorabilia. A one-of-one Bryce Harper bat barrel card is extremely nice. Most of the bigger hits in 2012 Bowman Platinum are hobby exclusives.

Hobby Configuration: 20 packs per box, five cards per pack

Product Review

2012 Bowman Platinum Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Paul Lesko

Good: Lots of positive similarities to last year's product, including good card design for large, on-card autographs. Base cards have a quality feel. Good checklist.

Bad: Like last year, difficult to tell which cards are refractors. Patch autographs use stickers.

The Bottom Line: 2012 Bowman Platinum Baseball high-quality product. Although, if you are an autograph collector, it may be cheaper to pick off the ones you want from eBay.

Staff Rating:
4.2 / 5.0

Card Design: 4.2/5.0

Like last year's product, the 2012 Bowman Platinum Baseball card design is good. The base cards have great photography and an expensive feel. The autographs have a large area for signing. They also strike a good balance between autograph surface and player picture. The only real downside to the base cards and base autographs is that they look too much like last years' card design (although this is a consistent theme with most card products as unique and distinctive designs each year are a lost art).

It's disappointing that the patch autographs are stickers, but that seems to be the norm for the industry. When Topps does such a good job with the base autographs, it would be a great opportunity for them to knock one out of the park.

Also, it’s difficult to tell which cards are refractors and which are the base set. Just like last year, I had to backtrack through all of the cards to track down the numbered refractors that I missed the first time through. Even now I’m not convinced I caught them all. And that's pretty funny because I pulled a red Miguel Sano base numbered out of 25 that, on my first pass, I thought was just a boring insert.

Checklist: 4.2/5.0

Unlike the Bowman and Bowman Chrome products that are very heavy on prospects, Bowman Platinum also includes a fair number of veterans. If you are mainly a prospector, be aware of that. Despite that (and this is coming from a prospector), it's an enjoyable and rather complete checklist.

From a prospector's view, the checklist is deeper than 2011. It includes notable prospects and rookies like Yu Darvish, Danny Hultzen, Gerrit Cole and Dylan Bundy (as well as the ever-present Bryce Harper). Also, there are a few desirable autos that did not appear in large quantities in this 2012 Bowman product like Yoenis Cespedes. These add value to the overall product.

Value: 4.0/5.0

2012 Bowman Platinum Baseball is an affordable higher-end prospecting product that should, in theory, get you a better return than Bowman or Bowman Chrome (three hits per box, compared to one hit per box). However, Bowman and Bowman Chrome autographs are typically more desirable than their Platinum counterparts. In the long run, I think both products offer similar value.

This, however, does open up an opportunity for collectors to pick up the less expensive Platinum autographs from the secondary market. All in all, a good value, and fun product.

The Fun Factor: 4.2/5.0

This was my second time breaking a Bowman Platinum box. I enjoyed it a lot more this year than 2011. With each box guaranteeing two on-card autographs and a patch autograph, there is value in just about every hobby box. Also, with the chances of pulling a Yu Darvish autograph, especially a unique variation signed in Japanese, it's an exciting product.

Ubaldo Jimenez? Who comes up with this stuff? Nice-looking set though.

I think Bowman Platinum is a great product for value because there are always cards of great prospects.
The product is good because it is the shinny touch to all the cards.
The one thing I don’t like about this product is the Prospect base cards because it is really hard to tell which is which. Thanks this is my entry for the Topps Prime Football contest.

Platinum, platinum, platinum… I bought it one more time this year just to see if the previous 2 years were a fluke…they were not. The card stock on the base set is terrible – lots of chipping and not much eye appeal. The chrome parallels look great, though, so I wish they would have made the set all chrome. As far as the autographs go, it’s great to get 3 in a box, but there is so much filler in these platinum sets that it’s hard to get anything of value. I personally sold all the base cards from my box and only kept the chrome cards and autographs. A full set of the chrome cards would be cool and just about the only cool thing about this set.

Please read my comments to 2012 Bowman because my experience was identical. Thanks

This is my favorite BB set of the year! I consider it mid-range in price, but it’s a great value! The look of the cards is outstanding. I love the inserts, from the die-cut cards to the refractors to the colored background parallels! The auto cards and relics are also very cool. These cards are just a sharp set and as one reviewer said above the base set is a “must have for all set collectors”.

Just got back into collecting after nine years, Wow love these cards! Glad I decided to start with what I feel are some off the most impressive designs I’ve ever seen, great job.

Has there been any news on a Bryce Harper or Yu Darvish blue version? Here’s a scan pic of my cards that I pulled. They aren’t numbered, but obviously one of the Yu Darvish cards shows a blue tint to it; as well as the Bryce Harper. If there is a different version of these two cards, what are the chances getting one? Thanks.

Good: Topps released a great product with 2012 Bowman Platinum Baseball. The cards are sharp, clean, and have a high-definition design. The autographs are the best part, with plenty of interest in cards of Bryce Harper, Mike Trout, Yu Darvish and others. This product delivers various veterans, rookies, and prospects. Similar to past releases, collectors can expect to find various parallels and inserts in each box.

Bad: There are not many bad things about this product. The reflective surface shows even the slightest imperfections easily. While it may be nitpicking, it’s always nice to have a product full of on-card autographs. Hard signatures and sticker autographs are mixed in 2012 Bowman Platinum Baseball.

It was also odd to find that the prospect are numbered but the veteran and rookie parallels are not. It would be great in the future if this were consistent.

The Bottom Line: The product stands out from other Topps releases because it has more than just veterans and rookies, but also lots of products. Would collectors accept anything different from a Bowman set? The autographs, inserts and parallel keep breaks exciting.
