User Rating:

Sticking with what makes it one of the most popular brands in the hobby, 2012 Bowman Baseball continues to be "the" place to find baseball's top early season prospects. Once again combining both base Bowman and Bowman Chrome, the chase will continue for autographs, which fall one per hobby box, and many levels of parallels. 2012 Bowman Baseball also marks the debut of Bowman Black autographs. A new wrapper redemption program offers collectors exclusive set of Blue Wave Refractors.

Product Configuration: 24 packs per box, ten cards per pack
Price Point: Low-End Baseball Card
Target Audience: Chromies, Prospectors, Autograph Collectors, Set Builders, Rookie Card Collectors, Refractor Collectors

2012 Bowman Baseball Box Break

  • One Autograph
  • Four Bowman's Best Inserts
  • 48 Prospects
  • 48 Chrome Prospects
  • 24 Gold Parallels
  • 240 Total Cards

2012 Bowman Baseball Product Highlights:

  • The 2012 Bowman Baseball set consists of 220 cards, including 30 rookie cards.
  • Base set parallels: Gold (1:1), International (1:8), Blue (/500), Orange (/250), Red (/1).
  • Base Prospects and Chrome Prospects inserts each have 110 cards in the set, with two of each coming in every hobby pack.
  • Prospect parallels: International (1:8), Blue (/500), Orange (/250), Red (/1).
  • Chrome Prospect parallels: Refractors (/500), Blue Refractors (/250), Gold Refractors (/50), Orange Refractors (/25), Red Refractors (/5), Super-Fractors (/1).
  • Silver Ice is a new parallel that's inserted one per box. Red Ice parallels (/25) are hobby exclusives.
  • Combined autograph odds are one per hobby box.
  • The Chrome Prospect Autographs checklist features some of the top picks from the 2011 MLB draft, including Gerrit Cole, Anthony Rendon and Danny Hultzen. Parallels: Refractors (/500), Blue Refractors (/150), Gold Refractors (/50), Orange Refractors (/25), Red Refractors (/5), Super-Fractors (/1). Purple Refractors (/10) and Printing Plates are exclusive to jumbo boxes.
  • Chrome Autographed Rookie Cards provide on-card signatures from first-year players. Parallels: Refractors (/500), Blue Refractors (/250), Gold Refractors (/50), Orange Refractors (/25), Red Refractors (/5), Super-Fractors (/1). Like Chrome Prospect Autographs, Printing Plates are only in jumbo boxes.
  • Buyback Autographed Rookie Originals (10 cards, /25) give collectors the chance to get signed rookies from players who never had an official Bowman autograph.
  • Bowman Black Collection Autographs (25 cards, /25) debut with striking silver signatures on a black background. Although this concept has been done elsewhere, it still looks good.
  • Bowman AFLAC High School All-American Autographs are inserted as bonus hits. Cards are serial numbered to differentiate them from those that were handed out to the players.
  • Bowman's Best (50 cards, 1:6) sees the long-standing brand stick around as an insert. Parallels: Die-Cut Refractors (/99), Die-Cut X-Fractors (/25), Die-Cut Atomic Refractors (/1).
  • Collectors won't be accused of being hoarders for keeping their hobby packs. A wrapper redemption program rewards collectors with a five-card pack of exclusive Blue Wave Refractors for every 24 hobby wrappers mailed in. The wrapper redemption checklist is only prospects.
  • Wrapper redemption participants can also look for exclusive Blue Wave Refractors and random Blue Wave Refractor Autographs (/50). Get full details on the 2012 Bowman Baseball wrapper redemption program.

2012 Bowman Baseball Product Review

Reviewed by Jesse Reynoso

Good: Every year collectors can count on Bowman to provide them with a nice variety of nice rookies and prospects. There are a couple of different sets within the release that makes the product more appealing. The chance of pulling autographs from Bryce Harper, Yu Darvish and Yoenis Cespedes add further interest. The new Silver Ice parallels are very nice. I enjoy having both Bowman and Bowman Chrome cards included in the same product.

Bad: The design of 2012 Bowman Baseball is very bland. There isn’t much going on with the simple white borders. They remind me of the regular Topps baseball set. The Gold parallels aren’t numbered. On some of the cards, it’s obvious that the players uniform was Photoshopped to make it look like they were playing with their new team.

The Bottom Line: Bowman is a great product for collectors who enjoy building sets. Combining both the base and prospect checklists, there are 330 cards to collect. Even though you’re only guaranteed one hit per box, 2012 Bowman Baseball is still a nice product for the price. There’s a chance to pull some great rookie and prospect autographs.

Staff Rating:
4.4 / 5.0

Card Design: 3.5/5.0

The base set design of 2012 Bowman Baseball is very simple. There isn’t very much going on with the white border. It would have been nice to see some more creativity. The Bowman's Best cards stand out with their colorful shine. I like the idea of the International parallels with having the player’s national flag in the background but they look awkward with the black border.

Checklist: 5.0/5.0

2012 Bowman Baseball is loaded with young talent, which is why collectors enjoy it every year. It’s one of the first products to include Yu Darvish and Yoenis Cespedes. They also included the first pick from last year's draft, Gerrit Cole, and the Nationals' young stud, Bryce Harper. Prospects aside, there’s a nice mixture of veterans in this set along with some rookies that are currently playing in the big leagues.

Value: 4.5/5.0

This is one of the low-end products that would be enjoyable for young kids to open. There is only one hit per box so it’s going to be tough trying to make your money back. However with such a deep checklist and lots of Refractor parallels, there are still lots of high-end hits to chase. If you enjoy collecting sets, then this is the product for you, although it will take a couple of boxes to complete the Bowman Chrome Prospects set since there are only two per pack.

The Fun Factor: 4.5/5.0

2012 Bowman Baseball has many types of parallels to look for. A nice mixture of veteran players is included for those collectors who don’t really pay attention to prospects. The Bowman Chrome cards make the set a little more exciting. For the price of the box, you can’t go wrong.

Ryan is a former member of The Cardboard Connection Writing Staff.   His collecting origins began with winter bike rides to the corner store, tossing a couple of quarters onto the counter and peddling home with a couple packs of O-Pee-Chee hockey in his pocket. Today, he continues to build sets, go after inserts with cool technologies, chase Montreal Expos and finish off his John Jaha master collection.

bought 2 cases and not a single darvish or harper or trout auto. got triples of auto of junk. 1300 dollars down the drain. i have learned my lesson. next year i iwll just take the 1300 and buy a few refractors of the top guys and not have a ton of unsellable cards. if you think the top cards are not going to the big box dealers your living in a vacuum.

Need more inserts. Nice prospect list. Worthwhile addition.

I think 2012 Bowman is a great product because there are lots of great propspects to go after and the cards have lots of value. I think the design is very clean and every year the cards look amazing. Also the thing I don’t like about this product is they don’t really make enough inserts. Thanks this is my entry for the Topps Prime contest my twitter is: https://twitter.com/CardCollect19

Every year the product for rookies and prospects are always going to be Bowman. Bowman and Bowman Chrome are the auto and rookie seekers who can’t afford the high end products.

Overall Bowman delivers what everyone expects. Rookies galore, refractors, prospects, and beautifully designed insert sets. I’ve been very loyal to Bowman as well as Topps and over the years I got over 4000 cards signed at various minor league stadiums . My problem is that they need to put dummy cards inside their retail packs or I will no longer purchase them. I’m on a fixed income so when I spend 3 to 4 hundred dollars on cards it’s huge to me. Out of 30 rack packs and numerous single packs I did not get one autograph. What I found out was someone searched all the packs and pulled out the autographs and most inserts. I didn’t believe this to the individual who did this took me to his card and opened 6 rack packs for me and each pack had an autograph. I later found out he goes to all retail stores around my area and pulls all the packs and sells them on ebay. A dummy card would put an end to this and everyone would have a fair shake. Thanks. Dave

this product so far has been my favorite release for baseball this year. love the checkilist, has alot of big potential names in prospects, and of course the big rc autos of the year. i did about a case worth of jumbos, maybe more, and the quality of the cards was good. each box delivered fairly well, price point was a bit high but the heavy checklist helped me forget about the cost. although i would like to see price point a lil lower. also, the bowman wave wrapper program i think needs some work. cards were beautiful, loved em, im more talking about the process to get these. seems this program favors the east coast, shipping time of wrappers, and big spenders, people who sent in 100/s of wrappers, and the true collector misses out. thanks for letting me give an opinion!

As I have always loved Bowman products, There is only one thing that bothers me. The fact that if you want to be lucky enough to pull either a superfractor 1/1, or a printing plate 1/1, you need to buy a special pack from a special place! Retail stores do not sell such packs and I feel like I will never get so lucky in my entire life! I’m sure there are others who feel the same way!

I bought 5 boxes and the best thing i got was a random rookie’s super refractor.

The bowman chrome I think is not worth it.

A must buy. The boxes broken thus far have not been loaded with numerous inserts, but the hits are quality. Condition of chrome prospects & prospects are excellent in terms of centering, surface and corners. No Darvish auto here, but hat great luck with the Josh Bell Auto, Tyler Collins Purple Refractor Auto & Bichette Autos from my Jumbo Box.

2012 Bowman is going to be HOT! HOT HOT HOT This year because I think the Bowman Black Collection is going to be a SUPER HIT with Collectors! I NEED a box or two if I can raise the money! Bowman Baby! Bowman Rules!

I am a l disappointed that the product contains NO retail autographs. Looks like i’ll be skipping this product when it hits the local Walmart, Target, Kmarts

The black auto cards, Darvish, Rendon etc make me love this as a prospector! Nice potential for some cash!

I’m VERY excited for this years release. Looks so good, may be even better than the past 2 years. Bowman is always one of my favorite, if not favorite products to bust open.
