For autograph collectors, few sets are better than 2000 Fleer Greats of the Game Baseball. With four autographs per box, the ink is plentiful in this set, which focuses entirely on retired players. And it's not just scrubs either. Plenty of Hall of Famers signed for the set, which also includes some of the first Mickey Mantle memorabilia cards.
The 2000 Fleer Greats of the Game Baseball base set is rather small at just 107 cards. The simple design evokes a strong sense of nostalgia. Brown borders give way to a simple player photo. A silver foil brand logo is at the top of the card while a team logo floats in the middle, the only element that may seem out of place. The photo fades out at the bottom, giving way to the player's name and team. The end result is a card front that emphasizes a refreshing amount of white space.
The big draw in 2000 Fleer Greats of the Game Baseball, though, is the autograph checklist. All signatures come on-card with a design very similar to the base cards. More than 90 different players signed for the set, including Nolan Ryan, Reggie Jackson, Kirby Puckett, George Brett and Yogi Berra. Several of these players are short printed, commanding a significant premium as this set is popular with set collectors as well as those going after their favorite teams and players.
Back in 2000, basic memorabilia cards still generated a lot of excitement. Yankees Clippings offered one of the first Mickey Mantle game-used cards. He is part of the 15-card set that consists entirely of players from baseball's most storied franchise. These cards are relatively tough to find, falling 1:48 packs, or every other box.
Retrospection is the only basic insert set in 2000 Fleer Greats of the Game Baseball. Based on the 1960 Fleer Baseball design, cards stick with the theme of retired greats. Cards from the 15-card set are inserted 1:6 packs.
