The sophomore effort from Topps Chrome can't possibly match the star power found in the 1996-97 Topps Chrome rookie class, but still offers collectors two big first-year names and a good all-around product. Headlined by the rookie cards for Tim Duncan and Tracy McGrady, 1997-98 Topps Chrome continues the tradition of strong basketball releases and is bolstered by Refractor parallels and some under-the-radar inserts.
While 1996-97 Topps Chrome was a retail exclusive, which ultimately helped its value, 1997-98 Topps Chrome was expanded to both hobby and retail outlets. The base set totals 220 cards and the design does not stray far from the original. Once again, base Refractors (1:12 packs) provide the most value for collectors.
Although Tracy McGrady represented the best rookie card available for many years, Tim Duncan has emerged as the preferred option for collectors and top rookie value. Chauncey Billups is also another appealing rookie found within the checklist.
Three inserts are available to collectors in 1997-98 Topps Chrome, including Destiny (1:12 packs), Season's Best (1:8 packs) and Topps 40 (1:6 packs). Every 24-pack box should yield several of each. There are also Refractor parallels for the inserts and Destiny Refractors are the rarest (1:48 packs).
Season's Best is the most notable insert based on the wild designs and overall variety. These make a great option for collectors to obtain some classic 1990s inserts for budget prices. There are six total themes featured in Season's Best, each with a different design. All six of the themes, including Shooting Stars, Power Core, Key Master, Hotshots, Pressure Points and Front Court Finesse, can be seen below.
Like most of the the 1990s products, Michel Jordan is a very popular option in 1997-98 Topps Chrome and he can be found in the base set as well as Season's Best and Topps 40 inserts. There is also a checklist card that honors the Chicago Bulls title team from the previous season.
One main complaint from collectors is the overall collation of the boxes. While box prices are not ridiculous, currently hovering around $100 per box, collectors who are hoping to pull McGrady or Duncan from a box are better off going with singles.
