1994 Upper Deck Baseball is intriguing for a few reasons. Regional distribution, rookie cards and holograms come to mind. Despite the fall of one of the key cards, it's a set that remains strong thanks to its strong checklist and photography. And the intrigue brought on by some of Michael Jordan's best baseball cards.
Released in two series, the 1994 Upper Deck Baseball base set has 550 cards. The first 280 are found in Series 1 packs while numbers 281 to 500 are from Series 2. For the first time in the brand's history, the base design incorporates black into the card fronts. The dark nameplate runs up the side of the card with the player's name done in foil. The main photo is repeated in this ribbon, squished and done in black and white. Card backs have a second photo and continue with the dark motif.
Among the subsets in the base set are foil Star Rookies, Top Prospects and Upper Deck Classic Alumni. All of these focus on up-and-comers. Alex Rodriguez is the top rookie card for someone who made the majors. However, there's also a Michael Jordan baseball rookie card hat still draws some attention. While he had an insert in 1991 Upper Deck Baseball where he was shown taking batting practice with the White Sox, this is part of the main set.
1994 Upper Deck Baseball marks the first time the flagship release had a pack-inserted parallel. Electric Diamond cards are quite common and not that much different. They different simply by an Electric Diamond notation on the front in a sparkly foil. Player names on the front of regular cards got the same treatment. Many of the inserts have Electric Diamond parallels as well.
Hobby boxes came with three different regional types. The major difference came in the inserts collectors could find in them. Both Diamond Collection and SP Previews have different checklists depending on the region they were intended for. Central are considered by many to be the most popular because those are the ones that have Michael Jordan for the region-specific inserts.
For fans of holograms, there's Next Generation. It's an 18-card insert set that are similar to the Holoview inserts from SP. Each card includes a small 3-D hologram of the featured player's face.
The Baseball Heroes program, which started in 1990 with Reggie Jackson, continues. This time the set highlights the career of Mickey Mantle. The design is a departure from previous Baseball Heroes sets. Not only is the layout different, but the cards are done on foil stock as well.
In the past, Baseball Heroes included signed cards from the featured players. That's not the case with Mickey Mantle, although he does have an autograph. He's featured on a card with Ken Griffey Jr. Both signed some of these art-based cards on their own. Others have autographs from both of the all-time greats.

Great set. The foil on the Michael Jordan and A-Rod rookie cards really pop and give them a premium look. This was a great set to collect back in the day. Like almost all cards from this time period the only drawback is overproduction that kills their value.
