1990-91 O-Pee-Chee Premier Hockey was released as a response to a growing number of premium brands in the hobby.
With Upper Deck entering the sport with the 1990-91 set, and products like 1990 Leaf Baseball proving popular, it seemed logical that the success would carry over to hockey's most recognized brand at the time. And it did.
The set was a huge success at the time of its release. And while prices declined significantly from their peak, it has seen a resurgence. OPC Premier remains one of the top hockey sets of the "Junk Wax Era" that is hindered by high production numbers.
1990-91 O-Pee-Chee Premier Hockey Set Details
1990-91 O-Pee-Chee Premier Hockey is a small set with just 132 cards. However, the checklist is loaded. It has several strong rookie cards including Jaromir Jagr, Jeremy Roenick, Sergei Fedorov, Mike Modano, Mats Sundin and Curtis Joseph. There are also plenty of notable second-tier rookies like Owen Nolan and Alexander Mogilny.
Cards have a clean design and colorful design. White borders on the front give way to a small frame around the photo. The sides and bottoms are color coordinated by team. The top has a slightly thicker gold box with the O-Pee-Chee Premier name. Photos are all crisp action shots. Backs are bright with an orange-to-red gradient dominating the background. A headshot and stats are layered over top to go along with stats and vitals inside it. Cards are printed on bright card stock.
Although there have been ups and downs, 1990-91 OPC Premier is still one of the go-to sets for top rookies. Professionally graded copies from reputable companies like PSA and BGS continue to draw a lot of attention.
1990-91 O-Pee-Chee Premier Hockey boxes have 36 packs of seven cards.
A limited number of boxed factory sets were also made.
