1976-77 O-Pee-Chee Hockey Cards
Product Details
Once again, 1976-77 O-Pee-Chee Hockey held firm at 396 cards. They also mirrored the first 264 cards in the Topps hockey set that year. However, with a franchise moving to a different city, the set has more than simply a back change.
As with past years, 1976-77 O-Pee-Chee Hockey used a generic style for the fronts. The player's picture was either posed or taken from a game. Above the photo is a team name with a slight tilted curve and a corresponding logo. The player's name and position appear along the bottom of the card. Backs are horizontally-oriented and printed in both English and French. They have a stats line across the top. Below that is a puck-shaped icon with a card number, along with the player's name and vital stats. Two boxes take up the bottom. The left box has a short biography with the right one containing a cartoon about the player.
The first six cards in the set feature league leaders in certain categories from the previous season. All-Stars have a medallion-shaped icon on their base cards. Card 132 through 149 featured team cards, which had a team checklist on the back and were arranged alphabetically by city name. A card featuring the previous season's Stanley Cup champions was is included. There are three regular checklist cards in the set. The Colorado Rockies are noted as the team that moved from Kansas City. Team leaders from the previous season are showcased on cards 379 through 396. Two new subsets appear in 1976-77 O-Pee-Chee Hockey. Cards 65 through 68 feature record breakers from the previous year. Cards 214 to 218 are multi-player cards done in a similar fashion to the ones Topps once used in its baseball sets.
In a change from 1976-77 Topps Hockey, players who were with California have a line that explains they were now with the Cleveland Barons. Among those players is Gary Simmons on cards 176. He actually has three variations: the Cleveland note, one that mistakenly said he was with Colorado and one with the error airbrushed out.
Bryan Trottier and Dave "Tiger" Williams are the only two notable rookies in 1976-77 O-Pee-Chee Hockey. Trottier did get a second card in the Record Breakers subset.

Something I feel should be mentioned is the differences between the OPC and Topps sets. It is true that they are ‘mirrored’ but OPC chose to replace at least four cards with different players: 102 Wilson for Wilkins, 159 Lefley for Bergman, 183 Harrison for Sheehan, and 243 Garland for Redmond. I was wondering where to find out more of when this happens because I find it very interesting.
