User Rating:

1975 Hostess Baseball cards launched one of the most popular and endearing food-issue lines of all-time. What's not to love about mixing Twinkies and baseball cards? And while nostalgia plays a big part in its lasting popularity, the set is strong in its own right thanks to its fairly comprehensive checklist, solid player selection and availability.

The 1975 Hostess Baseball set has 150 cards. This is huge for a food-issue set. However, cards were distributed as three-card panels on the backs of boxes for Twinkie, King Dons and other snacks.

With such a large checklist, for an oddball set, it should come as no surprise that there are lots of good players. Hank Aaron, Nolan Ryan, Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Thurman Munson, Reggie Jackson and Carlton Fisk are just some of the notable stars and Hall of Famers. However, the most intriguing might be Robin Yount. While most collectors don't consider food-issue cards to be rookie cards, this Yount did come out in the same year as his Topps and O-Pee-Chee rookie cards.

Full three-card panels measure 7 1/4" by 3 1/4". When cut down to size, single cards are 2 1/4" by 3 1/4". Because they were on the backs of boxes, many were mis-cut. However, there was space left between cards on the panel, each with a clear set of dotted lines to help the process.

Today, full panels can still be found with some regularity. These command a premium over individual cards.

Overall, 1975 Hostess Baseball card values are very reasonable. Even clean cards of top players can be found for virtually any budget. Top-level professionally graded panels can get a little high, but that's to be expected from a set from this era. Just be careful of the glow coming from the Twinkies if you come across an unopened box in your travels. But knowing Twinkies, those original cakes might still taste the same as they did when Gerald Ford was in office.

Ryan is a former member of The Cardboard Connection Writing Staff.   His collecting origins began with winter bike rides to the corner store, tossing a couple of quarters onto the counter and peddling home with a couple packs of O-Pee-Chee hockey in his pocket. Today, he continues to build sets, go after inserts with cool technologies, chase Montreal Expos and finish off his John Jaha master collection.

5-star. First set Hostess put out. Excellent for promoting their bakery product. As a youngster, my brother and I would hold Hostess parties so we could buy more. Rode our bikes all over to the convenient stores and supermarkets to buy boxes of Twinkies, HoHo’s, King Don’s, Crumb cakes, Suzi Q’s, etc. Spent our allowance and more to get these cards. Even got grandma involved in buying Hostess. By 1979, we forgot all about them. While they offered regular cards inside some of their boxes in the early 90’s, it was never the same as the 1975 set. Certainly, one of a kind!
