1972 Kellogg’s All-Time Baseball Greats Baseball Cards
Product Details
Card for card, it's hard to match the quality found within the 1972 Kellogg's All-Time Baseball Greats Baseball checklist.
Today, retired greats are common in a lot of sets. But back in the early 1970s, it was something a little different. A few sets existed here and there, like a handful of the early Fleer baseball sets, but they were the exception. Perhaps that's what makes 1972 Kellogg's All-Time Baseball Greats so interesting.

A spinoff of sorts from the MLB sets the cereal producer was releasing at the time, 1972 Kellogg's All-Time Baseball Greats has a small checklist of just 15 cards. But what a checklist it is. All 14 players in the set (Babe Ruth appears on two cards) are Hall of Famers.
Like Kellogg's other sets from the 1970s, this one brings 3-D images. Considering how far the technology has come, they still look very good today. They're smaller than traditional cards, measuring 2 1/4" by 3 1/2". A small white border gives way to a starred blue inner border. The player's name is displayed inside a yellow ribbon along the bottom. A yellow shield at the top of the card notes their place as a great.
Card backs squeeze a lot of info onto them. Besides a small photo, there are two sections of text. The first is a brief bio. The body of the card has a write-up of career achievements and highlights along with some stats.
Because of the material used to produce the cards, 1972 Kellogg's All-Time Baseball Greats are prone to cracking. This is common for all Kellogg's sets from that period. However, if the plastic manages to stay intact, these cards don't have a lot of other condition issues.
One might think that the strong checklist, unique theme (for the time) and cereal box distribution might make 1972 Kellogg's All-Time Baseball Greats cards pricey. It couldn't be more opposite. Cards are extremely reasonably priced, even graded. The small checklist also makes it a relatively easy set to build.

The 1972 Kelloggs All-time Greats set is a rather interesting set, strictly of old timers. 1972 was the first year that I collected baseball cards, and so, it left an impression on me as a kid. I remember getting a couple of cards from the 1972 Kelloggs ATG set (Babe Ruth and Mickey Cochrane) from the Danish Go-Round pastry box. Three years later (1975), I bought a complete set of the 1972 Kelloggs ATG set (all 15 cards) for just $3 from “The Sport Hobbyist”, a mail order business based in Detroit, that used to advertise in various baseball magazines back then (1970’s.)
