1970-71 O-Pee-Chee Hockey Cards

1970-71 O-Pee-Chee Hockey appeared to go with an altered design of its set from the previous year. This time, the graphic hockey stick has disappeared and a series of five lights has fills the background. At the same time, the set was expanded to include 264 cards.
Fronts feature a player image that is superimposed in front of a background that is colored by team. That background includes five "lights," one near each corner and one in the center. The player's name, team and position appear in the white area beneath the player that also includes the border around the card. 1970-71 O-Pee-Chee Hockey backs are green and black and divided into two parts. On the left is a black box with the player's name, team, position and vitals. Below that is an artist-rendered action shot that includes a card number inside a puck. The box on the right has year/life statistics and two biographies: one in English above the stats and a French translation below it.
Cards from all of the NHL's teams are included in the set, including the expansion Buffalo Sabres and Vancouver Canucks. Card 111 of Britt Selby and 175 of Mickey Redmond are found with or without lines mentioning trades. In both cases, the card with the trade note is more valuable. Card 248 either does or does not mention that Gordie Howe is the all-time leading scorer, with neither variation being more valuable that the other. A special card memorializes Terry Sawchuk, who passed away in 1970. The Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins get a card, and the duo of Cashman and Hodge get a card together. Cards 234 through 245 feature All-Star players, cards 246 through 253 commemorate the various award winners and cards 254 through 263 show several trophies. There are also two checklist cards.
Notable rookies in 1970-71 O-Pee-Chee Hockey include Bobby Clarke, Gilbert Perreault, Brad Park, Guy Lapointe, Darryl Sittler and Wayne Cashman.
