User Rating:

1964 Wheaties Baseball Stamps offer a simple look at the game's stars and history from the perspective of the mid-1960s. Unless you're looking at top-condition singles that have been professionally graded, it's a relatively affordable set as well.

Designed to release in the lead-up to the 1964 All-Star Game at Shea Stadium, the checklist features 50 players from the 1963 Mid-Summer Classic. Because it's all All-Stars, the list is strong. Willie Mays, Roberto Clemente, Hank Aaron and Duke Snider are just some of the eventual Hall of Famers in the product.

The stamps are almost square, measuring 2 1/2 by 2 3/4 inches. The design is about as basic as it gets with a player picture inside a white frame. The only other design enhancement is a facsimile signature.

Both the set of 1964 Wheaties Baseball Stamps and an album were part of a mail-away offer. Collectors got the full set and the book to house them in for 50 cents plus a certificate printed on specially marked Wheaties boxes.

The 48-page album includes moderately extensive write-ups for every player including career highlights. Details on the All-Star Game itself as well as baseball's ballparks are also included.

Stamps were done in five sheets of nine plus one sheet of five. In order to make them single stamps, they had to be carefully perforated. That in itself can result in damage. Also, any moisture over the years could cause them to stick. Stamp paper is also less durable than traditional card stock. And then there's the simple fact that a lot of the stamps were likely put into the album as they were intended to. So while 1964 Wheaties Baseball Stamps aren't the rarest finds, there are likely significantly less than there could have been.

Today, he continues to build sets, go after inserts with cool technologies, chase Montreal Expos and finish off his John Jaha master collection.
