User Rating:

1960 was the first year of the American Football League, and the Fleer Gum Company jumped into the business of making football cards the same year. Thus began a four-year run of featuring AFL players on Fleer cards.

Card fronts featured a picture of a player superimposed onto a solid-colored background with a white aura round the player's image. Below the player is a bottom area divided into two parts: on the left is a green-colored area that looks like a football field viewed from an angle, with a goalpost at the top. That area contains the name and position of the player. To the right, a white area that is part of the border features the name of the player's team. The goalpost motif is continued on the back, where a football-shaped icon that appears to be going through a set of posts contains a card number in the upper left corner. It is part of a red band at the top that includes the player's name, team and position. The area below the strip has a couple of lines of vital stats and a biography.

All eight original AFL teams are featured, with seven head coaches (the Denver Broncos are the sole exception) also being included in the set. It would be the last time until 1989 where the coaches were given their own cards in a football set.

Since the league was not yet playing when the cards were printed, players are shown in their college or NFL uniforms. Also, there are two players (Jim Woodard and George Blanch) who never made their team or played in a professional football game. There are 132 cards in the complete set, and all were issued in a single series. One of the problems collectors find with the 1960 Fleer set is the fact that so many cards are found off-centered.

The key card in the set is Jack Kemp's rookie card. Other important first-timers include Ron Mix, Billy Cannon, Paul Maguire and coaches Sid Gillman and Hank Stram.
