1933-34 O-Pee-Chee V304A Hockey Cards
Product Details
While regarded as a Canadian counterpart of Topps, O-Pee-Chee was actually around and making cards long before Topps made its first piece of gum. During the 1930s, the company issued five sets that are now considered to be pre-war classics. All five sets have been classified as V304, with a letter designation based on the series designated on the back. 1933-34 O-Pee-Chee V304A Hockey launched the line.
Cards feature a black-and-white player photo superimposed in front of a six-pointed star design. Additional smaller stars appear in the background as well, and there are four possible background colors: blue, red, green and orange. A box below the player contains his name. The backs begin with the words National League Hockey Stars in boldface, followed by the player's name. There is a short biography presented in two languages. The text above a line is in English. A French translation appears below it. A line along the bottom identifies the card as belonging to Series A.
Hobby historians place the issue as a 1933-34 set. There are 48 cards in all, with the key cards showing two of hockey's biggest legends, Howie Morenz and Ernie Shore. Other major stars in 1933-34 O-Pee-Chee V304A Hockey include Charlie Conacher, King Clancy and Nels Stewart.
