Product Details

User Rating:

Switching from pro to amateur teams, 1928 V128-2 Paulin's Candy Hockey offers another sweet treat for hockey card collectors.

The second issue from Paulin's Chocolates was issued during the 1928-29 hockey season. Although the V128-1 set was made up of players from the Western Canada Hockey League, that league was disbanded in 1926.

To make up for the void, 1928 V128-2 Paulin's Candy Hockey cards feature several amateur squads from Western Canada. This includes a number of high school, college and women's teams.

1928 V128-2 Paulin's Candy Hockey Set Details

The V128-2 cards display a black-and-white player or team photo. A thin black line surrounds the picture and a white border appears around the card. The player's name is listed in the border area underneath the picture, except for Calgary Jimmies players, who are only identified by their team.

1928 V128-2 Paulin's Candy Hockey backs have a card number and identify the name of the candy. The text is very similar to the V128-1 cards, including the hockey stick promo and chocolate replacement offer. The listed expiration date of June 1, 1929, differentiates V128-2 from the earlier Paulin's set, which had no date at all.

Given that the redeemed cards carry a stamp or punched hole, there is naturally a premium for intact cards.

As a set of amateur cards, very few players in the 1928 V128-2 Paulin's Candy Hockey checklist are well-known names to hockey fans. The two main exceptions to this are Charlie Gardner and Berg Irving. Largely, the team cards are of interest to general collectors as they offer a snapshot of hockey's history.
